Set in a fictional sheep station in the Australian outback, the story focuses on the Cleary family from the years 1915 to 1969. One of the main characters is a priest, who becomes the object of one of his parishioners love affairs.

The author's own brother, Karl, drowned at the age of 25 in 1965 while rescuing some people in Malia in Crete. This event was mirrored in the drowning death of Dane, one of the book's characters.

The book's title refers to a mythical bird that searches for thorn trees from the day it is hatched. When it finds the perfect thorn, it impales itself, and sings the most beautiful song ever heard as it dies.

The story is about a professor, his nephew and a hired guide who travel down a volcano in Iceland encountering prehistoric animals and natural hazards, eventually coming to the surface again in southern Italy.

The creatures they meet reflect the geological time; as the rock layers become older and older the deeper one gets, the animals get more and more ancient the closer the characters come to the center. Silent Spring is a book written by Rachel Carson and published by Houghton Mifflin in September 1962. The book is widely credited with helping launch the environmental movement.

When Silent Spring was published, Rachel Carson was already a well-known writer on natural history, but had not previously been a social critic. The book was widely read (especially after its selection by the Book-of-the-Month Club and the New York Times best-seller list), and inspired widespread public concerns with pesticides and pollution of the environment. Silent Spring facilitated the ban of the pesticide DDT in 1972 in the United States.

The book documented detrimental effects of pesticides on the environment, particularly on birds. Carson said that DDT had been found to cause thinner egg shells and result in reproductive problems and death. She also accused the chemical industry of spreading disinformation, and public officials of accepting industry claims uncritically.

Gideon's Trumpet is a 1964 book by Anthony Lewis describing the story behind Gideon v. Wainwright, in which the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that criminal defendants have the right to an attorney even if they cannot afford it. In 1965, the book won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Fact Crime book.
A made-for-TV movie based on the book was released in 1980, starring Henry Fonda as Clarence Earl Gideon and José Ferrer as Abe Fortas. Lewis himself appeared in a small role as "The Reporter". The movie was a Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation produced by Worldvision, and aired on CBS.

The name is a play on words, using the defendant's last name and invoking the biblical story in which Gideon ordered his small force to attack a much larger enemy camp. Gideon's army carried trumpets and concealed torches in clay pots. When the call to attack came, the noise and light they made tricked their enemies into thinking that a much larger army was attacking them. Thus, Gideon won the battle with little actual fighting

Black velvet paintings originate in ancient Kashmir, the homeland of the fabric. These original paintings were generally religious and portrayed religious icons which were painted by Russian Orthodox priests. Marco Polo and others introduced black velvet paintings to Western Europe, and that some of these early works still hang in the Vatican Museums.

The paintings were widely sold in rural America, and frequently have kitsch themes. They often depict images of Elvis, Jesus, nude women, and the pink panther.
