This delicate lotus flower was found at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Lawai, Kauai across from Spouting Horn. As you drive in, look to your right, and you will see a beautiful water lily and lotus flower pond with lots of dragon flies playing in the water.

Koi fish are so beautiful and graceful. I love watching them swim around in the pond. They are very colorful and fun to feed. Koi have a very long lifespan. The oldest koi in recorded history lived to be 226 years old!

The painting’s story: “Ohana” is a Hawaiian word that means family. Just watch a “Lilo and Stitch” movie and you will know just how important the ohana is here in Hawaii . This painting represents the chicken ohana – the rooster, hen, and baby chick. There is no doubt that wild chickens are an important part of the life and culture here on the Garden Island of Kauai.

The most common question asked by visitors to Kauai is, “Why are there so many chickens everywhere?” Chickens were originally brought to the Hawaiian Islands in canoes by the early Polynesians. These “Polynesian” chickens are called “moa”. After time, other domestic chickens were introduced to the islands. The hurricanes have spread the chickens to remote places on the island, and there is no predator (like the mongoose) on Kauai . There are so many, that they have become the island’s mascot!

She has the most spectacular garden, and one day she invited me to come photograph her flowers and plants. I took many pictures, but what really caught my eye was this colorful pineapple! The pineapple has long been considered a symbol of hospitality and welcoming. This painting would make a wonderful house warming present!

This is a reproduction of a custom painting I did for the owner of the only llama on the island of Kauai, Bronco Billy. The painting was a surprise for his wife and when we unveiled it for her, she actually cried! She said that I captured the personality and spirit of Bronco Billy.

I see the llama every day as I drive to my studio since his pen is right next to the road near a small baseball field. He loves to eat carrots, apples and the Hawaiian Ti leaf.
