When Red meets Black,
What will it be?
Will they mix and …
Or will they argue and fight?
But now they’ve met
Red has its place and so does Black
They are not lost, nor has their beauty gone,
But together they make something completely new;
So it seems to me
Their harmony
Makes 1 + 1 much more than 2 !!!

I was inspired for this piece by the December 2009 EBW Challenge theme.
When I read the theme my thought went to who I have seen people -individuals or various social groups- disagree, fight or argue with a lot of passion and no reason at all other than that their are afraid that by agreing with the other person -or group- they risk loosing their identity and individuality to the other person. We are afraid of mixing with and accepting the others because we are afraid of loosing ourselves.
But when people manage to overcome this fear and unite, they find that what they have ended up with is much more than just the individuals they started out with. They also have something else as unique and valuable; now they not only have themselves, the also have what they created together. So 1+1 is more than 2..

I used beautiful onyx faced discs combine with red silk and cinabar to create this stunning neck piece. The onyx beads are strung knotted using a traditional pearl knotting technique. The cinabar bead with its lush fringe is attached to one end and an embelished beadwoven ring is attached to the other.
I have also added a second, larger decorated beadwoven ring which can be used to create different looks.
This lariat single to hang long, it may be doubled around the neck or you may use the second ring for more interesting ways to wear.

The Greek Key

The Greek Key -or Meandros in Greek- is a decorative border which has a surprising number of different versions. Though used in many cultures throughout history, it is a classic design of the Ancient Greeks –my ancestors- who used the key extensively to decorate their pottery, statues and mosaics and has it’s origins in Ancient Greece. The myths claim that there is a connection between the meaning of the key and the labyrinth where Theseus fought the Minotaur.

Its name, Meandros was given by the Greeks after the twisty River Meander (today called Büyük Menderes) in South Western Turkey because is a single path which twists back on itself just like the twisting river. In symbolic terms, it is said to symbolize the eternal flow of things and be the symbol of eternal life, eternal love and eternal friendship.

The pattern got its other name, Greek key, because the square pieces sticking out in the pattern look rather like a key.

I decided to use this pattern for my EBWC piece as it has a very strong link to my Ancestors. I also chose colors that were of particular importance to the Greeks; red was color of the distinctive Spartan Cape which was the Ancient Spartans only actual piece of material clothing –regardless of the weather- aside from their helmet, bracers, and any other piece of armor, and gold because they used it to make the fine jewelry worn by the privileged.

The bracelet is made using dimentional RAW, a very "geometric" stitch that matches this pattern perfectly!

Another project inspired by Rachel Nelson Smith’s work. I saw a picture of her See Star Bangle on her site last spring and was fell in love with it! I devised my own way of constructing it and choose colors bright corally colors mixed with a matte beige – cream color that brings out the shine in the coral colored beads. Copper colored seed beads at the tips of the spikes give a nice closure to the piece.
It is made of hundreds of tiny glass seed beads and countless hours of endless stitching but who cares; it was great fun! I am sure you will enjoy wearing it as much as I enjoyed creating it!

This is an unusual, funky bracelet that will definitely get people talk about it!
