You can find wild animals in many places, but how often do you find them in their natural environment looking carefree and undisturbed. These big horn were migrating into lower a lower altitude for the winter months ahead. This was mother natures way to assuring there would be food to eat until they returned to the top of the mountains for the summer.

This spring it was soon after the birth of this young bison that I appeared on the scene with my camera.

My zoom lens allowed me to take the photograph without upsetting the mother and the young calf was very content. As you can see from the surroundings, it was early spring in Yellowstone.

I approached them in some fairly tall grass and "mama" beckoned the babies to follow her away from me into another field. The doe jumped the fence as did one of the fawns. This one didn't make it over the fence, I stood still and eventually the fawn became comfortable with me standing there.

I then took of series of pictures, this being my favorite.

$20.00
What is the speed limit for bison in Yellowstone National Park. Standing beside this sign is a way of bragging or perhaps a way of telling both friends and enemies that you may have to work hard to keep up with him. Actually this is not the complete story. The bison’s best defense when they are in the open grasslands of Yellowstone National Park is to run. They can reach a top speed of 35 miles per hour for up to a half hour. So if you are a visitor in Yellowstone, don’t aggravate this critter, especially if you are strolling in the general area where he is grazing, loafing, or relaxing. If you are a predator, capturing the bison is no easy task either, especially if he wants to run or turn on you with his powerful head and horns.

By the time I arrived, the eagles were full and the ravens had taken over the carcuss. This eagle is full, looks full, and is relaxing on a fence post. This picture, taken near the end of the summer, represents a male bison who has experienced one of the finest years of vegetation in Yellowstone National Park for years. The snowfall in the winter and late spring of 2008 created the a lush environment for the wildlife.

This bull is a fit as I've ever seen and then posed in the area of some large rocks.
$27.50
The Western Meadowlark ,sturnella-neglecta (Audubon), was chosen as the State bird of Montana in 1930 by a vote of the school children of the state. By an act of the Montana Legislature, the western meadow lark was adopted as the official state bird on March 14, 1931. It is also the state bird in the western states of Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, and Wyoming.

The meadowlark was first noted by Lewis and Clark in 1805 near Great Falls, Montana. The neglecta part of the formal name occurred in 1844 when Audubon noticed there was a difference in the wetter climate (eastern) and the drier climate (western) meadowlarks and named the western meadowlark, neglecta as it had been overlooked for so long.

Its bright colors, fearless behavior, abundance, and above all its loud, cheerful song make the Western Meadowlark one of the best known of western birds. The song is often heard on movie sound tracks even when the setting is far from the bird's range.

An abundant and familiar bird of open country across the western two-thirds of the continent, the Western Meadowlark is beloved for its melodic song. It is frequently seen singing atop fenceposts along roadsides in native grassland and agricultural areas. A male Western Meadowlark usually has two mates at the same time. The females do all the incubation and brooding, and most of the feeding of the young.

$20.00
It was a struggle for this bull elk even though the photograph does not tell the total story. While you and I may think this is beautiful, the temperature was 5 degrees below zero, there was at least 18 inches of snow, and the only food to eat was bark from trees and shrubs. A park ranger once described to me that the elk’s winter diet would be more like humans having a diet of paper. This bull elk, who probably weighs over 700 pounds, is one of 15,000 to 22,000 that winter in Yellowstone.

Elk (Cervus elaphus) are the most abundant large mammal found in Yellowstone National Park; paleontological evidence confirms their continuous presence for at least 1,000 years. Although climate and elevation are important criteria to the survival of the elk in the winter time, this bull will survive as this picture was taken in March.

You may have doubts about this elk’s ability to survive, but he ate well in the fall in preparation for the winter, snowfall and cold weather. He started preparing for winter as the days got shorter and the temperatures got colder. There may be up to 75 inches of snow during the winter season and the temperatures can get well below zero degrees fahrenheit. The elk are at their weakest as the winter extends into spring, hence, the visitors to the park are asked to give them as much space as possible and the predators will stalk the elk and pursue either the oldest or weakest.

Soon this bull will lose his antlers and new ones will start to grow back in May. As you can see there are 6 tines or points on each side and the total weight of the rack could approach 30 pounds. These are important parts of his arsenal when he starts sparring for authority when mating season starts in the fall.
Sing, Sing a song, Original Fine Art Photography

$20.00
I have visited Yellowstone National Park over 100 times since the mid-90’s. On only 2 occasions have I been close enough to capture an image of the canines with this amount of emotion and feeling. The artistic quality of those images can only be determined by you, the viewer.

On a recent trip to the Lamar Valley, I was returning to the Mammoth Hot Springs entrance when I spotted a buffalo carcass and a pack of coyotes. I took a number of photographs, 2 of which I am fond of and I hope you are also. Three coyotes had left the carcass and appeared to be leaving the feast when suddenly 2 of the coyotes appeared to resent the company of the 3rd one, and attacked it. The attacked showed definite signs of submissive behavior while the other 2 turned in the opposite direction.

Soon they started to howl, like a celebration of the riddance of the one attacked. A picture of the attacked coyote is shown to illustrate the reason for their singing. The howling continued for some time, which was when I took this picture.

I have captioned the photograph as, “Sing, and sing a song”. Looking at what I now believe to be the alpha male and female, they would remind me of a happy couple singing their favorite song. If only I could relate what they were really saying.
The answer you see in this picture. The fence post is in the left corner and the hawk is on its way. As was documented on the other picture, he was hungry and he didn't fly very far before it landed on another fence post.

If you haven't seen the red tail hawk, captioned, "I'm looking, I'm waiting",it's pictured next to our inflight hawk, go there to learn the rest of the story.

The price on this item has been revised. This morning, in early July, the bison were assembled along the Yellowstone River in a heavy mist or fog. The intense sun had started to burn away the moisture in the air, some of the animals were grazing while others were resting.

If you haven't been to Yellowstone or you are not an early riser, this picture captures the moment.

They prefer not to be near people, places or things so if you want to have a bird house for them it is best to place it in a field, at least a 1/4 mile from roads and buildings.

As we drove the road to Cooke City from Mammoth, I saw the tip of his antlers on the side of a hill. I knew he was large by the distance the points were apart. Ultimately, I gave up, and started to climb through the snow to capture his image on the camera. At the same time, he had decided to get up and wander to the tree you see in the picture.

With the ground covered with at least 3 feet of snow, the best place for him to eat was the bark and branches of the tree. So, while he was eating, I took pictures. One of the park rangers compares their winter diet to humans eating paper. His visits would include courting the females and playing with the pups he sired. Casanova wasn’t interested in leaving his home, Yellowstone National Park, like some of his peers have. This special gentleman hasn’t been interested in chasing others or killing for the sake of the thrill. He is a lover, not a fighter, and he has traveled many miles to meet his lady friends and become their mates.

One of his favorite places to visit is the Lamar Valley, the home of the Druid Pack. He has ventured there in the early spring to court the young ladies who have been immediately attracted to him. They have courted and most times made love. However, two of the greatest and most famous wolves in Yellowstone, alpha male #21 and female #42 of the Druid Pack had ruled the roost for a record number of years. They would notice Casanova, #302 at the perimeter. When it looked like the Don Juan was either spending too much time there, particularly when it was #42’s daughter or, perhaps even acting like he was part of the pack, he was asked to leave in no uncertain terms. He would then travel to another pack and play out his charm there.

Things changed when #42 was killed by a neighboring pack and #21 was found dead. The once famous Druids not only had lost their leader but also the largest pack in Yellowstone was dwindling in size, and the neighbors were moving into the Lamar Valley. The famous Druid Pack was almost gone when ‘ole #302 and his brother returned to the Lamar Valley, located the 2 remaining daughters of #21 and #42, and the romance was re-kindled. For the first time in years, there were pregnancies in the Druid pack, in the spring there were pups. Casanova had returned to not only be the sire and lover he was known as but also their leader. Soon the Druid’s started to return to the notoriety that they were known for and Don Juan was the leader.

As time advanced, #302 turned the leadership reins over to his brother #480, but the unofficial beta of the pack, Casanova maintained his role as the lover. It was not only his breeding but his fathering of the pups that ensured the survival of once threatened future of the Druid Pack

He was known throughout the park by frequent visitors, wolf biologists, and Emmy award-winning cinematographers. They all knew Casanova; they knew his role and his daily activities.

The story of Casanova has also be documented on the award winning NATURE series on television and is also available in the popular DVD, "In the valley of the wolves". We have several other views of this popular wolf if you are interested.
This photograph is also available in 5 x 7 for $15 and 12 x 16 for $45
