22g silver filled wire, round, half-hard, 32.5 feet long, 0.6mm diameter.

This high quality, tarnish resistant wire is made expressly for the jewelry making industry. It is an attractive, affordable, quality wire.

It works and wears well, has an excellent sterling color and sheen, and is regarded by many to be second only to solid sterling wire. It is made by bonding an outer tube-like portion - 1/40th sterling silver by weight - to a pure copper core, giving the appearance of sterling at a fraction of the price.

This wire is well suited for use in wire-wrapping and more. Oxidize it. Hammer it, roll it, solder it. Braid it, crochet with it, knit with it. Use it for earwires and clasps. Make headpins that end in a scroll or tiny loop. Use it to make bracelets, necklaces, earrings, pendants, and chain maille. Make bookmarks and paperclips.

SS/40 sterling filled wire is not a plated wire. Electroplated wire has only a microscopic application of precious metal on top of non precious wire, in a thickness of .175 microns ( 7 - one millionths of an inch). To try and visualize this, a human hair measures between 70 and 200 microns, vs .175 microns. There simply is no comparison between SS/40 wire and plated wire.

Wire wrapping:

I use Tool Magic to coat my pliers to prevent marring and damage to the wire, which not only protects the wire - it also saves me additional time and work removing nicks or rough areas. When cutting this wire, keep the flat side of your flush cutters toward the end of the wire that will show. The "pinch" will minimize exposure of the core. Use a cup burr to smooth the ends of earwires to prevent irritation.

If you are new to wire wrapping, don't worry - you will make mistakes. Don't be discouraged. Practice with inexpensive hardware store wire. Then come back and see me. I'll gladly sell you all the wire you'd like!

Hammering:

I use a non-metal plastic type hammer & surface when I flatten wire. Some artisans use a brass hammer, some protect the wire by sandwiching it between leather or soft flannel. You can use an ordinary hardware store ball pein hammer on this with or without padding. Explore. Have fun. Practice pounding and to see how far you can go.

Oxidizing:

Use liver of sulfur or the hard-boiled egg method to oxidize the surface of silver filled wire. The pure copper core oxidizes as well as sterling silver. You can create a lovely dark finish. If you've (unintentionally) hammered a little too enthusiastically and a bit of copper shows, oxidizing will mask this.

Soldering:

Silver filled wire can be soldered with a torch using sterling silver solder and the same flux and pickle you'd use with sterling. Although I haven't tried it, a soldering iron with silver-bearing solder would probably work as well. Follow the instructions & use the flux recommended by the manufacturer of the solder product you are using.

If you try to fuse or otherwise melt this wire - both of which are different from soldering - you will expose the copper core.

6 feet of 14 gauge, 1.5mm diameter, round half hard SS/40 925 sterling silver-filled wire.

Larvikite - grey stone with black flakes with blue, gold and silvery flashes - each stone varies. These stones are larger than stones found in the strands and half strands offered for sale.

Large, substantial focal bead/pendants measure 38-40mm long by 28-30mm wide. Pendant-beads drilled lengthwise.

Perfect companion to black tourmaline, blue chalcedony, or more larvikite! (And more larvikite is coming to my shop).

Larvikite is a member of the labradorite/spectrolite family - more than that I can't tell you - I may have rocks in my head, but I'm not a geologist!

24 Gauge 10KT/40 wire - 65 feet - 0.4mm thick -

This high quality, tarnish resistant German wire is made expressly for the jewelry making industry. It is regarded by many to be second only to solid gold. This is an attractive, affordable wire that works and wears well.

The rich, warm color as well as the depth of color found in this wire is outstanding. Please take a closer look at the photos of the earwires - the color of this wire is shown most accurately in those photos.

Uses:
This wire is well suited for use in wire-wrapping and more. Hammer it, roll it, braid it, crochet with it, knit with it. Use it for earwires and clasps. Make headpins that end in a scroll or tiny loop. Use it to make bracelets, necklaces, earrings, pendants, and chain maille. Make bookmarks and paperclips. See photos for earrings made using this wire.

Wire wrapping:
I use Tool Magic to coat my pliers to prevent marring and damage to the wire, which not only protects the wire - it also saves me additional time and work removing nicks or rough areas. When cutting this wire, keep the flat side of your flush cutters toward the end of the wire that will show. The "pinch" will minimize exposure of the core. Use a cup burr to smooth the ends of earwires to prevent irritation.

If you are new to wire wrapping, don't worry - you will make mistakes. Don't be discouraged. Practice with inexpensive hardware store wire. Then come back and see me. I'll sell you all the wire you'd like!

Working with this wire:
This wire withstands light hammering. Extensive hammering will expose the copper core. I sometimes flatten it between two pieces of thick acrylic board (or a similar material). I use a non-metal plastic type hammer & surface if I flatten it. Some artisans just pad the wire with leather before hammering with a ball pein, or use a brass hammer directly on it.

How this wire is made:
10KT/40 (10/40 RGP) consists of an outer tube made from 1/40th 10KT gold by weight (or 2.5%) bonded to a pure copper inner core. 10KT/40 is made in the same - or very similar - manner as gold-filled wire. This is not a plated wire. Electroplated wire has only a microscopic application of gold on top of non precious wire, in a thickness of .175 microns ( 7 - one millionths of an inch). Soldering:

Silver filled wire can be soldered with a torch using sterling silver solder and the same flux and pickle you'd use with sterling. Although I haven't tried it, a soldering iron with silver-bearing solder would probably work as well. Follow the instructions & use the flux recommended by the manufacturer of the solder product you are using.

If you try to fuse or otherwise melt this wire - both of which are different from soldering - you will expose the copper core.

Blue South Sea Shell Pearls - 16mm - 15 to 16 inch strand.

These pearls are stunners. I would describe the color as navy blue with barely a hint of purple. They have traditional satin sheen and luster - very striking.

These pearls would coordinate well with iolite - they'd be absolutely smashing! A choker of pearls with a long strand of iolite coins. Yummy.

Please exercise care with these and other pearls - pearls have a delicate finish, and can be damaged by perfume, makeup, or harsh cleaners. They may be cleaned using gentle soap and warm water. Do not scrub, rinse with clear water, air dry on a paper towel or towel.

Beautiful little bead strands. Blue labradorite, strands average 15" long, individual beads average 2mm in diameter - some a bit larger, bead size varies within the strands and between strands.

Lots of blue and silver with occasional green and yellow sbits of flash. Beads are hand cut and hand polished in India. Labradorite that has been dyed blue, with no color rub-off on handling. Rinsing is suggested, and not just with dyed beads, but with all beads.

Lovely blue labradorite strands, averaging 15" long, individual beads run 6.5 -7.5 mm in diameter.

Lots of blue and silver with occasional green and yellow sbits of flash. Beads are hand cut and hand polished in India, some may have flat spots, but these still are lovely beads.

Larvikite bead strand - large rectangular beads measure around 24mm X 32mm - grey with black flakes - primarily blue flash, some silver, occasional gold. Rectangles measure around 24mm X 32mm, beads drilled lengthwise.

Shades vary - some strands light, some dark - I am happy to accomodate preferences while I can. Contact me if you would like to choose.

These strands are a perfect companion to black tourmaline, blue chalcedony, or more larvikite - please see the large larvikite pendant/focal beads for sale in my shop.

Larvikite is a member of the labradorite/spectrolite family - more than that I can't tell you - I may have rocks in my head, but I'm not a geologist!

I've been told there is a building in Chicago that has larvikite on the walls of its lobby, much like marble is used. Let's get the chisel...

Ahhh. Gotta love it. Larvikite large. Large luscious faceted strands. 30 x 40mm faceted slabs, strand 15- 16" long, 10 beads to the strand.

Lots of black flecks, some strands have a dark grey background, some medium, a few light - the photos show examples of each, including the very lightest strand.

Most strands are heavy on the silver flash, light on the blue, a few are distinctively golden. These beads mix exceptionally well with the 8mm faceted black onyx rondelles found in my shop.

16 gauge 925 sterling silver filled wire - high quality, low price

The wire:

9.75 feet of round, half-hard, 16 gauge, 1.2mm diameter SS/40 925 sterling silver-filled wire.

This high quality wire from Germany is made specifically for the jewelry-making industry, and is considered by many to be second only to solid sterling silver. It is made by bonding sterling silver to a pure copper core. It resists tarnish, and because it is bonded, it wears well, and it contains more sterling - and is of a much higher quality - than plated or coated wire.

Uses:

This wire is especially well suited for use in wire-wrapping. This is an SS/40 wire with a pure copper core, not solid sterling silver.

This wire withstands light hammering and light sanding with an extra fine grade of sandpaper. Hammering or sanding this wire more extensively than this will reveal the copper core. Remember, this is 1/40th precious material by weight bonded to the core, not 1/20th. I don't recommend soldering this wire.

That said, I've made earwires, pendants, and have wire wrapped with this wire with very good results.

Tips on working with this wire:

I use Tool Magic to coat my pliers to prevent marring and damage to the wire, which not only protects the wire - it also saves me additional time and work removing nicks or rough areas. I use a non-metal plastic type hammer & surface if I flatten it. I generally don't hammer this wire. It doesn't require additional hardening - it's already half-hard.

More about this wire:

Many people don't really understand what the SS/40 and 10/40 designations mean. This wire is truly a quality wire. A tube of 1/40th sterling by weight (SS/40) is bonded to a pure copper core.

If you like a dark oxidized finish, it's OK to be less gentle if you choose to hammer SS/40 sterling filled wire, even to the point where a little of the core shows. Oxidation will mask this. Hammered or not, you can use liver of sulfur to oxidize the surface of this silver filled wire. The pure copper core oxidizes as well as sterling silver. You can create a lovely dark finish.

I carry this wire in 16 gauge, 18 gauge, 20 gauge, 22, 24, and 30 gauge in filled gold & silver filled. I carry 14 gauge in SF only.

These pendants measure just over 2" in diameter, and are an orange - tinged brown. Looks great with the red agate beads listed in my shop.

These pendants sell in my local bead store for $20+. I wouldn't pay that much for one, and neither should you.
