Man in Purple Grass

$370.00
This painting explores my contemplative response to nature and sense of self/other. There is an influence of the Romantic painter, Caspar David Friedrich, who sometimes painted solitary figures looking into the landscape with their backs to the viewer of the painting, as if viewer and painted figure are looking at the same scene. Here however the picture plane is flattened and there is no horizon, but only an immediate sense of the ‘dark night of the soul’ which the figure faces.

Medium: Mixed media (Acrylic, pastels and colouring pencils on cardboard)

Year: 1997

Size: 23.5cm x 9.57cm

Support: Painting sits in relief (by 2.5cm) against a cream mount board surround within a box style light wood frame treated with bees wax. The frame forms part of the art work.

Dimensions of frame: 30cm H x 25cm W x 4.1cm D

Hanging: D-rings and wire on the back ready to hang with two bumpons to protect wall.

Signed: Signed by the artist on the front.
Know

$370.00
This is one of a number of small paintings that I produced working from a sketch of myself looking in the mirror. Later I developed this sketch into some compositions exploring my contemplative response to nature and sense of self/other. In this piece the figure awkwardly asserts himself in the studio space, his sense of identity being simultaneously questioned and asserted by the word ‘KNOW’ across his chest. This painting was actually produced in a fit of rage; having worked all day to produce nothing of worth I became very angry and blasted this piece out in one short burst. The way this word ‘Know’ found it’s way into the painting, on reflection, spoke to me about the source of knowledge involved in the creative act; being taken by storm from somewhere deep within. It was a kind of mystical moment!

Medium: Mixed media (acrylic, collage, pastel on cardboard)

Year: 1997

Size: 24cm x 24cm

Frame/mount: light wood, deep rebate type frame treated with bees wax.

Dimensions of frame: 27cm H x 27cm W x 3.7cm D

Hanging: D-rings and wire on back ready to hang.

Signed: Signed by the artist on the front.
The Word Unbroken II

$370.00
This painting is created using an amalgamation of preliminary sketches taken from various sources; theatrical performers, people in cafes and workmen up the side of a building with scaffolding. Their various forms were re-imagined within this abstracted arrangement of figures around a central table. I wanted to capture the sense of a community of belief represented by the central table (as a symbol of shared ideas) and the visionary figure looking upwards. However in this second version the visionary figure has disappeared; his/her presence felt only by a grey shadow.

Medium: Mixed media (acrylic, collage, pastel on cardboard)

Year: 1997

Size: 20.3cm x 15.2cm

Frame/mount: Painting sits in relief (by 2.5cm) against a cream mount board surround within a box style light wood frame treated with bees wax. The frame forms part of the art work.

Hanging: D-rings and wire on back ready to hang with two bumpons to protect the wall.

Dimensions of frame: 34.7cm H x 28.5cm W x 4.2cm D

Signed: Signed by the artist on the front.
Blue Sleeve

$220.00
This is one of the small paintings that I produced working from a sketch of myself looking in the mirror. Later I developed the sketch into some small compositions exploring my contemplative response to nature and sense of self/other. Here a slightly androgynous figure seemed to emerge out of the black landscape. After I had painted this one I was reminded of the painting by Titian called ‘Man with a Quilted Sleeve’ due to the puffy blue sleeve.

Medium: Mixed media (acrylic, charcoal and colouring pencils on cardboard)

Year: 1997

Size: 23.5cm x 9.57cm

Frame/mount: Hand cut bevel edge mount using cream mount board within a light wood, deep rebate type frame treated with bees wax.

Dimension of frame: 44.2cm H x 27.8cm W x 3.8cm D

Hanging: Wire on the back ready to hang

Signed: Signed by the artist on the front.
