This painting was inspired by some recent sketchbook work. I was trying to do something a little different, kind of a doodle in paint to get the ideas flowing. One of those ideas was this piece - layers of paint make it a little chunkier and more textural in style than my normal pieces, and I've also explored contrasting colours here with the yellow against purple.

I've used a mixture of acrylic paints and metallic poster paint, on a canvas measuring 12cm (7") high by 18cm (5") wide, to create this artwork. The colours of these paints continue over the sides of the canvas on which this is painted, to give one continuous block of colour, meaning that this painting does not need to be framed. It does not, however, come ready to hang, but I can add hanging wire to the back if you wish, for no extra cost.

Rain - an abstract landscape on canvas

Paint drips down this canvas, in imitation of British rain. I first painted the grey-blue sky and copper-coloured ground, then layered a mixture of acrylics and water over this, allowing it to drip, and also added a little green to the bottom. The dark rain creates a rich green in the ground.

A recent visit to Somerset, involving many varieties of cider, inspired this painting. Fiery orange and yellow at the bottom blend upwards into a deep dark purple. Flashes of pink run through both.

This painting was inspired by a recent visit to Somerset. On the way home from one of our daytrips, we saw a truly amazing sunset. When I got home, I had to paint that fiery sky.

As the title may suggest, this painting was inspired by a recent visit to Cheddar, Somerset. There was a beautiful tree by the river there. Of course, the sky isn't purple in Somerset or anywhere else. Maybe it should be.

I've used a mixture of acrylic paints, on a canvas measuring 12cm (7") high by 18cm (5") wide, to create this gothic artwork. I blended shades of purple with white to create the sky, then painted black over this to create the big old tree. The colours of the sky (although not of the tree) continue over the sides of the small canvas on which this is painted, to give one continuous block of colour. Birdie Tree - a small painting on canvas

This stylised tree, and the little bird which sits on it, have been painted in a mixture of black acrylic and copper-coloured metallic poster paint. This metallic paint changes with the light, so sometimes you'll see a bit of sparkle, sometimes you'll just see a dark brown. Also, the copper and black have not been completely blended, to give a nice texture to the tree. The canvas on which this was painted measures 12cm (7") wide by 18cm (5") high.

Red Sky at Night - a mixed media painting on canvas

This piece came about from a desire to mix two elements of what I do, the painting and the wire sculpture. I was also wanting to go somewhere else with my art, wanting to try a bit of mixed media but not sure which media to mix. These two wishes came together in this artwork, the title of which comes from the old saying:

Red sky at night,
Shepherds delight.
Red sky in the morning,
Shepherds warning.

This painting is a representation of a tree in silhouette against a red sunset. I've created this piece using a mixture of acrylic paints and copper-coloured poster paint. I've also used a little bit of copper wire, which forms part of the structure of the tree. This wire also goes behind the canvas, to attach itself there, and forms a loop at the top for hanging the painting (see fourth and fifth images). Some of the wire has been painted over, both for aesthetic reasons and to help it to stick to the canvas. For the latter reason, there is also a little bit of paper and PVA glue on the canvas, which I think also add to the interesting texture of the piece. The canvas itself measures 23cm (9") wide by 30.5cm (12") tall, and is 2.5cm (1") deep. The addition of the wire makes the piece 37cm (14.5") tall in total.

The Escape - a mixed media painting

This piece is a tree escaping from its frame, hence the title "The Escape". This painting does not just stop at the frame, it continues onto it.

Onto a second-hand wooden frame, I painted green and blue woodstain, then painted some branches onto the green, and a trunk onto the blue, using copper-coloured glass outliner. As part of the trunk, I left a knot in the wood bare, to make a feature of it. The piece that's now inside the frame was painted on cardboard, using acrylics and poster paint. I used the same mixture of acrylic and poster paint to paint inside the branches on the frame. Copper wire was then wrapped around the frame to hang this piece from. I feel the curves and colour of the copper compliment the glass outliner on the frame.

The frame itself measures 26cm x 21cm, although the hanging wire does of course make it taller than that, so the whole piece is about 26cm square. The fourth image shows the back of the piece, and the way that the wire's been wrapped around it. The wire is wrapped well enough to support the piece on its own, but I've also added some tape and paper to make it extra secure.

Trees - acrylic painting on canvas

This painting is a representation of twisted oak trees in a dense forest. The trees themselves were painted using a mixture of black acrylic paint and metallic copper poster paint, painted in several layers to give a slightly raised texture. The leaves were painted in simple dabs, deliberately creating a less detailed effect than that of the trees. I used the the same poster paint for this, mixed with green acrylic.

The box canvas on which this forest is painted measures 41cm (16") high, just over 50cm (just under 20") long, and just under 4cm (1.5") deep. The detail of the trees and their leaves continues over the edges of the canvas.

Batty Moon - a hand-painted ACEO

One of my favourite sights in the sky is when the moon is full. Silhouettes against the full moon make it look even more magical. Here, a cloud of bats are silhouetted against a bright full moon, in a dark blue night sky. Details are picked out in silver.

This ACEO was painted in acrylics and silvery poster paint. The piece of 220 gsm paper on which it was painted measures 6.5cm (2.5") wide and just over 8cm (3.5") tall, as is standard with ACEOs.

Dark Day - composition on two small canvases

This is a two-part composition involving a tree which spreads across two square box canvases, and is a smaller version of a previous artwork of mine, "Dark Day and its Sunset". The first canvas depicts one side of this tree in daylight, and the other shows the other side of the tree at sunset. The tree on the daylight side has been painted using a mixture of copper poster paint and black acrylic, giving it a metallic sheen that looks different in varying light. The sunset tree is in silhouette, painted in black acrylic, a striking contrast to the bright colours of the setting sun.

The entire composition, without a space in the middle, measures 41cm x 20cm (approx 16" x 8"). The individual canvases measure 20cm x 20cm, and 2.5cm (1") deep. The colours of the sky continue over the edges of both canvases, giving two continuous blocks of colour, This means that this diptych does not need to be framed. The canvases do not, however, come ready to hang, but I can add hanging wire to the back if you wish, for no extra cost.

Inspired by trees silhouetted against the sunset, this piece depicts two trees silhouetted against a purple and green sky. These trees curve and join together, forming a heart in the space between.

I've used a mixture of acrylic paints on 220 gsm paper to create this gothic art card. I blended shades of green and purple with white to create the sky, then painted black over this to create the two trees. This piece measures 6.5cm (2.5") wide and just over 8cm (3.5") tall, as is standard with ACEOs.

One of my favourite sights is when the moon is full, and the sky is cloudy. When the clouds part, and the moonlight catches on them, it looks magical to me.

This piece depicts a bright full moon in a cloudy, dark blue night sky. I painted this ACEO in acrylics and liquid watercolour, with a touch of silvery poster paint. The 220 gsm paper on which it was painted measures 6.5cm (2.5") wide and just over 8cm (3.5") tall, as is standard with ACEOs.

This painting depicts a scene from a park I used to visit as a student in Stoke-on-Trent. I would sketch, collect twigs and take photos there, it was a great source of inspiration. In this piece, trees and the dark ground from which they grow are silhouetted against a pale sky.

The linen canvas on which this scene is painted measures 41cm (16") wide by 51cm (20") high. The painting continues over the edges of the canvas so that it does not need to be framed. It does not, however, come ready to hang, but I can add hanging wire to the back if you wish, for no extra cost.

Kinver Edge - painting on linen canvas

This painting was inspired by a place I often visit called Kinver Edge. There is a lovely woodland there, which I find very inspiring. This piece was loosely based on a photo I took nearly a year ago.

To create this artwork, I've used a mixture of acrylics and copper-coloured poster paint, on a linen canvas measuring 20cm (8") high by 25.5cm (10") wide. I have not painted the whole canvas, therefore allowing the natural colour of the linen to show through. The earthy tones of the paints I have used compliment this natural colouring. These paints continue over the sides of the canvas, so that this painting does not need to be framed. It does not, however, come ready to hang, but I can add hanging wire to the back if you wish, for no extra cost.
