I drew it from a 1969 picture of the the Craftsman style house that I grew up in (and a healthy dose of imagination!)

This is a giclee print of a 54 x 42 original mixed media drawing that I did in 2007. This print is from a limited edition of 300 and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.

I like the giant candles because they remind me of Stonehenge, a mysterious yet somehow sacred place of wonder and awe. This is also my contribution to an art genre that was popular in the late 1800's call Vanitas. The idea is that we are all so arrogant to think that our lives are important even though we live but for a tiny moment in the grand scheme of things and since we are eventually going to die. The cycle of life will continue to repeat itself as if we never existed. The common images seen in Vanitas paintings were old books, skulls, burnt candles, bubbles, clocks, small creatures - things that suggest the passage of time or are quickly spent. This drawing is a departure from my usual schtick ;) (see profile) I had taken an art history class called "death in art," about how artists approach that subject in their work. It was creepy and upsetting, but ultimately very enlightening. We also learned about a similar genre called Memento Mori, latin for "remember you will die." If you are finding this interesting so far, you might want to google that to see some examples. This is the only piece that I've done with this theme, so it is a unique example of my work.

The little girl looks out longingly at the enticing scene not knowing that if she went out and grabbed the seed pods they would disintegrate in her hands. Beauty and Irony converge in this strikingly rich image.

This is a print from a 42 x 51 original mixed media drawing made by me in 2007. The castle in the picture is the fabled Neuschwanstein, built by the Mad King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869-86. It was the one Walt Disney modeled his Cinderella's Castle after. I visited it in 2004 and it was amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone who might be traveling southern Germany.
