The Nereids are the 50 sea nymph daughters of Nereus and Doris in greek mythology; they were the female attendants to Poseidon.

Despite conflicting accounts from writers of the time (Homer, Hesiod, Apollodorus, and Hyginus) there is a record of names and even brief descriptions of some of the numphs' domains or powers or translations of their names. I'm using online sites that cross-reference the authors and nymph references to decide on the paintings. To start with I have chosen names with the strongest evidence - those used by multiple authors or with a strong descriptive reference. Unfortunately the vast majority of the nymphs are not written about, named by only one author, or mentioned without any translation or description.

My abstract paintings are an attempt to collate the existing information into 50 final seascape 'portraits'. An interesting aspect of the project is that the nymphs were originally personifications of aspects of the sea, attempts to make tangible features of water, sailing and weather. My paintings now reverse the process by re-abstracting the literal meanings into images.

"Over the Rise"

In the middle of the park is a little dip - where the front lawns meet the bottom of the hills. You walk up a little rise before the path leads downwards just for a bit. A tiny haven of shade under the large ancient trees.

The park is full of lush green grass, criss-crossing paths, ancient trees, and rolling hills. This summer series was created from my own sketches and time sitting in the famous royal Greenwich park, which I have the good fortune to live one block away from! Have a little piece of contemporary art about this beautiful park with a history before Henry VI, a castle (now the Queen's House), the Royal Observatory built by Charles II and a hunting ground by Henry VIII. Next year it will host the 2010 Olympic equestrian events but until then it's still a public park for everyone to enjoy - now including YOU!

From my Yorkshire coast series here is the famous "Scale Nab" cliff from the Bempton Cliffs - where the gannets and other seabirds nest. Painted from a sea perspective, from the Yorkshire Belle boat that tours around the cliffs and caves.

The painting was a challenging process of drawing details lines of the geological fault in the rockface, then using my trademark soft glazing to unify the painting. Strips of green sea and grass lie at the top and bottom of the painting.

The "other" hill in the park (the main one being the one with the obseratory) where lots of paths meet to climb steps up, cross down below, or walk your dog back in Squirrel Heaven. The web of paths make a lovely pattern against the bright spring green grass.

This is a painting from my earlier Lake Michigan series - based on the lake and view from the Chicago shoreline. This painting was a canvas I did before a large commission, of the lake from the Hyde Park area around 53rd Street, with the Metra lines running along the lakeside. Light and subtle green water and atmosphere with glazes of blues and pinks beneath.

Another new painting - this is a sister piece to 'Moonlight on Rougher Seas' which sold recently. Darker and purple-er 'Night Tide' has twinkling stars in the dark sky shining down on the moonlit seas. Subtle swooshy colours can be seen in the water glazes. One sister piece to this painting (it was made as one of three) "Night beyond the Ice" was sold last year at an exhibition at London's The Cork Street Gallery, for the 1st annual Cork Street Annual Charity Exhibition. The other sister piece "Cold Water" is also in my Etsy shop.

"The White Bridge" at first appears rather contrary to its name. The painting is based on the drawbridges crossing the river in downtown Chicago - a series of drawbridges connecting the city. The white bridge is a simple part of the painting stretching across the vast bright cobalt blue of water. From my Lake Michigan series of horizon paintings.

"Cold Water" is a large painting from my Lake Michigan series of horizon paintings. Once again we are at Lake Michigan in Chicago, in the winter. The bitter cold, but of course we're wrapped up warmly, looking out on a grey misty day over the lake water. Hints of colours in the waves and light from the sky, and texture from the ice and frost along the shore. I loved my walks and runs along the peaceful, empty beaches in winter.

We cannot master or humanise the sea, so I capture mere moments of its lifespan.

Though the paintings are specific places from my cycling along the British coast, many people are reminded of places from their childhood or a favourite seaside spot. Simple abstraction connects with real landscape. The depth and luminosity come from many very transparent layers of colour built up slowly, an effect rarely achieved with acrylic paint. The longer you look the more of the colour and variety you see in the paintings.

Part of the English Coast series

This painting is one of the few coast pieces that is not of a particular place but rather a combined feeling and image of various journeys - capturing that late evening light of near-dark grey, where our vision starts to lose colour perception except where the light is brightest. A bright shingle (stone) beach reflects light while the dark sea sits calm in the distance under the darkening sky.

This painting is called "Weightless" because while working on it I listened to the song "Weightless" by Girlyman on repeat. Yes, just that one song. For about 3 weeks.

One of my newest paintings, first shown at Edinburgh Art Fair, November 2008.

Part of my Yorkshire coast set - capturing the long thin penninsula that is Spurn Head. A narrow natural structure that creates a boundary between the North Sea and the Humber river into Hull. A strange area of grasses, stone and beach that acts as a nature reserve. My painting is of the misty rainy September day when I arrived (and cycled the cobblestoned path the whole length!), with the strip of land set vertically as it stretches out between the two bodies of water on the left and right.

An 'English Coast' painting from the spring series along the Thames Estuary - from Margate to Sittingbourne. This painting is of a myseterious little place called Plumpudding that seems to exist on the Sustrans (cycling organisation) cycle route maps but on no other maps! Strange... but a pretty little place where channels of water fill the low-lying area beside the sea. Much of this stretch of coast westward from Margate is given over to nature sanctuaries for birds and wildlife.

"Up the Hill"

A single curving path takes you up through the dark lush grass and up One Tree Hill on the west side of the park - up into the trees to look over all of London.

Greenwich park is full of lush green grass, criss-crossing paths, ancient trees, and rolling hills. This summer series was created from my own sketches and time sitting in the famous royal Greenwich park, which I have the good fortune to live one block away from! Have a little piece of contemporary art about this beautiful park with a history before Henry VI, a castle (now the Queen's House), the Royal Observatory built by Charles II and a hunting ground by Henry VIII. Next year it will host the 2010 Olympic equestrian events but until then it's still a public park for everyone to enjoy - now including YOU!

"The Boating Lake"

Lake is a bit of a stretch - pond. :)
The boating lake is famous in the park, sitting at the bottom of the grassy hills just large enough for a handful of paddleboats and rowboats with giggling children in them. A reflective pool of blue sky amidst all the green.

This summer series was created from my own sketches and time sitting in the famous royal Greenwich park, which I have the good fortune to live one block away from! Have a little piece of contemporary art about this beautiful park with a history before Henry VI, a castle (now the Queen's House), the Royal Observatory built by Charles II and a hunting ground by Henry VIII. Next year it will host the 2010 Olympic equestrian events but until then it's still a public park for everyone to enjoy - now including YOU!

A slight variation from the park series, instead a river view from outside my Greenwich studio... I love my view! But it's the antithesis of the seascapes I usually paint.

A slip of green Thames river can be seen with the Tate & Lyle sugar factory directly across from my window. The colours of the factory buildings and docked ship out front change hourly with the light - today it's the soft green building with the red of the pier and cranes glowly pink in the late day. Casting an abstraction of colour along the water.

On my cycling tour of the coast I had to climb the road (on the bike) to Beachy Head cliffs - the highest cliffs in England and renowned as a jumping point, alas. I made it! Though oddly there are no cycle racks at the top! It's a grassy, bushy bit of countryside right next to Eastbourne and is a beautiful vista over the sea, looking down on the lighthouse. This painting captures the height of the grassy climb, looking down over the white chalk cliffs to the water.

The Nereids are the 50 sea nymph daughters of Nereus and Doris in greek mythology; they were the female attendants to Poseidon.

Despite conflicting accounts from writers of the time (Homer, Hesiod, Apollodorus, and Hyginus) there is a record of names and even brief descriptions of some of the numphs' domains or powers or translations of their names. I'm using online sites that cross-reference the authors and nymph references to decide on the paintings. To start with I have chosen names with the strongest evidence - those used by multiple authors or with a strong descriptive reference. Unfortunately the vast majority of the nymphs are not written about, named by only one author, or mentioned without any translation or description.

My abstract paintings are an attempt to collate the existing information into 50 final seascape 'portraits'. An interesting aspect of the project is that the nymphs were originally personifications of aspects of the sea, attempts to make tangible features of water, sailing and weather. My paintings now reverse the process by re-abstracting the literal meanings into images.

I studied painting and printmaking privately with Greenwich artist Annette Johnson. This was supplemented with classes at London's City Lit, Morley College, and Blackheath Conservatoire of Music and the Arts. I'm a fulltime artist working from my studio in southeast London.

My work has been exhibited throughout England and is in private collections both here and in the USA, Europe, Australia, Japan and Ireland.
