Sea anemones are a group of water dwelling, predatory animals named after the terrestrial flower called anemone. This ornately colored sea anemone is a close relative of coral and jellyfish. Anemones are stinging polyps that spend most of their time firmly attached to rocks on the sea bottom or on coral reefs.

There are over 1000 species of anemones found in coastal waters worldwide, in shallow waters and in deep oceans. I enjoyed the many discoveries of sea anemones here at the James V. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.
