Set atop a wide band in size 9.5 is a small city: a swath of building-like sterling rectangles and squares that call to mind years in New York City and the yearning in my soul to see more than just pieces of sky:

a yearning to see that great Southwest Sky roll out over the miles ahead, behind and on both sides like an endless upside-down sea.

The thing is, I also loved the city in more ways than I could ever describe: it had so many of its own freedoms, its own rules and customs and I was a member of its tribe, truly.

I smile to remember that interplay of wanting and having, being so full of sky and so close to city here in Petaluma, California. My oh my life takes us some amazing places!

This ring is about having the best of both worlds: the city and the sky. The stone in it is amazing and pure Arizona turquoise with a horizontal brown matrix, barely there and a stunning addition to the unreal blue of the mineral.

This ring cannot be resized and is one of a kind.

If cities really were concrete jungles, then these glass flowers might be the flora of the region: a lovely mixture of red and yellow lightly touching orange before separating.

These blooms are strung on sterling silver hammered ovals, hand forged and attached via closed connection to a pair of hand-made ear wires.

For all their length (nearly 2 inches) they are surprisingly light and very fun to wear: I made myself a pair, too!

All the silver has been oxidized and brushed to add texture to the metal and bring out the hammer marks.

Whenever it rains I am inclined to search for rainbows and what's more, if there's a rainbow I am destined to try and chase it to its end... I recall driving across Wyoming on a fortuitous night in May and I can swear I got close enough to touch what surely waits at the tail of those spectacular colors:
Bliss.
Golden and peaceful bliss.

I am of the seeker tribe in life: if something's not as I wish it would be I try every avenue I can to find a way through the challenge, into a better place, so it seems rainbows would be irresistible to one such as me!

This particular little agua nueva agate cabochon looks undoubtedly like it belongs in the sky above the clearing clouds of a storm: a monochrome rainbow of cream, lavender, tan and gold... so lovely to behold!

On one end is a bouquet of clouds and at the other is a pot of gold with the word 'seek' on its belly.

The pendant is strung from a gorgeous sterling chain that has a definite weight and a delightful link design. The total length is 18 inches, and my little Sunny Rising Mark hangs from the end of the necklace alongside the clasp!

California Snowflake Necklace

I have lived in California for the past seven years, and never once have I seen snow fall. My timing to visit Mt. Whitney was too late in the warm season and every time I visit my in-laws in Tahoe I seem to just miss a good drubbing....

It has come down to this: I must make my own!! As soon as I finished this design I stood back and smiled - finally -

snow in California for me!

In this case I took a wonderful and rare cabochon of ajoite in quartz, a mineral found in South Africa, and set in a sterling canvas into which I delicately sawed.... a snowflake!

Unique as the woman who wears this lovely piece, the glittering flake is dotted with sterling and 14k gold granules, oxidized, brushed and strung on a chain of sweet hearts!

Oh, Moctezuma Agate: I wish there were more of these stones commonly found, but they are rare and this is one of the most special of the pieces I have been lucky enough to receive: there is a light pink drusy in the center of a yellow stone.

On the inside of the drusy I have given the delicate touch of two sterling granules, like pearls in an oyster.

The stone is set simply on a band that features a sprout. The Sunny Rising stamp can be seen on the back, a one of a kind ring made here in my Petaluma studio.

I have been sitting on this stone like a frog sits on a lily pad: still and aware of its shelter and importance: this stone is incredible.

Inset inside of the round shape is a clear divot that looks like a lil pad before it's even been set, so I made sure to emphasize the natural wonder of it by setting in an impressionistic lily pad shape with elements of round granules and gently rounded edges.

The band is wide and hammered gently for texture and fits a size 7.25.

Have you had the experience of seeing a tropical sunrise? The colors explode into rich reds, orange, peach and luminous yellow and eventually mellow into the blue and white we call the daytime sky.

It is such a beautiful experience and one to be treasured.

In Hawaii this is what the sunrise looked like: a wash of amazing colors in soulful patterns just like this incredible mookaite stone.

I partnered the stone with a small coral branch portrait and oxidized all of the metal, brushing it to bring out the design to its fullest.

Anini Beach, Kauai- the scene: a newly married couple walks hand in hand stooping down every four feet or so to see something neither of them have ever beheld: an operculum!

This is the doorway to a snail's shell, discarded after the snail outgrows its shell or passes on and they are plentiful on Anini Beach.

We collected nearly fifty or so and I have been putting them into jewelry designs very sparingly as they are more precious to me than diamonds: pieces of one of the happiest two weeks I have spent.

Two of these amazing shells appear here in this design, simply set on light gauge sterling silver teardrops, complete with handmade sterling ear wires.

Earrings measure just over 1.5 inches long from the tip of the earwire to the bottom of the teardrop.

There are those moments when we feel so lost at sea, like there's no one watching over us and not a single rock to cling to. We simply take one breath at a time and ride out the tremendous storm.

On a dark and stormy night nearly a decade ago I remember feeling the deepest despair and at one point I actually surrendered to my pain and my tears: something told me I would not find them to be bottomless and that was an astute observation - the storm passed.

This year's summer was one of the best of my life, in part because of the amazing Farmers Markets that pepper the Sonoma County landscape seemingly all days of the week: inspiring, lovely, full of wonderful people and the most delicious, life-affirming veggies and fruits.

When I made these earrings (rounds of sterling nearly 2 inches in diameter!) all I could think of was harvesting because of the shape. I hammered them for texture and gave them a patina and brushed them for a lovely soft shine.

Breathe Art Deco Diaphragm Ethiopian Opal Ring

This ring is an approximation of a diaphragm: an artistic interpretation to this incredibly important muscle found right underneath the lungs: when you breathe in it takes the shape of an umbrella!

It is really a magical part of the breathing process in the human body and as I am constantly reminding myself to breathe it felt so lovely to make a version of that which I speak!

The opal I chose for this ring is a rich, chocolate brown Ethiopian Opal: incredibly rare and full - FULL of fire: reds, yellows, green and a spot of purple.
This is a very valuable stone and shows fire even in the dim light: see the picture on the right!

Right above the stone are two 14k gold dots and sterling sprouts that mimic the shape and the striations of the diaphragmatic muscle.

On the back of the wide band reads the word 'Breathe' -
