I just had to add a Michelangelo quote for this description...I recently saw his sculptures in person, and it makes me appreciate so much more the opportunity I have to work with wonderful male models such as the one in this drawing.

This model always challenges us with interesting and complex poses. I challenged myself further by working with a Sharpie marker on white mat board - there's no going back once you start drawing! If something is wrong, you have to incorporate it into the final piece.

Angel of Hope - Open Edition Print

This is a dye-sublimation print on glossy photo paper of a mixed-media painting on masonite board.

My inspiration for this piece was an Angel sculpture located on the Saint Angelo Bridge in Rome. I took many photographs of the gorgeous sculptures and also spent a long time drawing the statues in the wonderful light.

This Angel has been named "Hope", and the spirit of this piece is captured in this quote

"Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow them."

Angel of Compassion - Open Edition Print

This is an open edition print of a mixed-media painting on panel.

The source of my inspiration was a sculpture that I saw in Rome, near the Saint Angelo Castle. I took several photographs, and even drew the sculptures while sitting on the Saint Angelo Bridge, enjoying the beautiful light.

I have titled this Angel Compassion, and find that this quote captures the feel of the piece (recommended by a wonderful fellow Etsian - thank you!)

This mysterious and yet tranquil image was painted from a photograph in a fashion magazine. I loved the feeling of the piece, and I eliminated the faces because you knew so much about them just from their hair, their clothes, and the elegant gestures of their hands.

As occassionally happens, our model did not show up for a figure drawing group one week, so we drew from a still life instead. It was actually quite fun, something I hadn't done in a while.

I used charcoal on a watercolor paper mounted to foam core. The drawing has elements of Cubism.

When I got the drawing home, I added acrylic paint as well as more charcoal to emphasize some of the lines.

15" x 22". Watercolor paper mounted to foam core, signed by the artist (me). Will ship flat.

I have always loved drawing the female figure. I think it comes from my inherited art talent, but also from my years as a dancer. I love the lines of the female form, the grace, the beauty, the elegance.

I think this figure drawing of the nude female model shows that discreet nudity is sexy. The curve in her back, the gentle slope of the neck, the hint of the under side of her breast. You don't even see her face, yet you know she is Beautiful.

Original Painting - Mixed Media Art - Female Nude in Blue -

This lovely classic figure drawing would look wonderful in a master bath or bedroom. Beautiful color, incredible texture, and a striking model.

This is an orignal mixed media drawing/painting on a gessoed masonite board. The gesso has a venetian-plaster like texture which creates an incredibly interesting and atmospheric surface.

I started the piece with a light wash of blue watercolor to lay out the over-all image. I then used a Prussian Blue Nupastel to draw in the figure, occassionally softening the lines and speading out the color by using a brush dipped in water.

If an area became too dense, I used sandpaper to soften the lines and reveal more gesso.

Painting has been sprayed and sealed.

Gesso, watercolor, and Nupastel on Masonite board.

24" x 24" (approx.)

Original Fine Art Painting - Angel of Hope

A large painting based on a photo I took of an Angel sculpture in Rome. Acrylic on masonite, 24" x 36".

While exploring the Saint Angelo Castle in Rome, I took several photos of the gorgeous Angel sculptures that lined the Sant Angelo bridge that crosses over the "Fiume Tevere". The sunlight was exquisite, and I was in awe of the drapery and expresiveness of each sculpture.

I spent a long time sketching on the bridge. And when I got home, I painted this piece based on one of my photos.

The surface was prepared with a thick, textured layer of Gesso. I then slowly developed the form of the angel, her drapery, and her wings using transparent and opaque layers of paint. I would also use a fine sand paper to "erase" some of the paint, revealing layers underneath and developing a history to the surface.

The painting may appear black and white at first, but there are glazes of cranberry , blue, and copper in the folds of the drapery, giving a shimery effect to the surface.

This is a large painting, and heavy. Shipping charges are approximate and may be adjusted depending on destination.

The model was posed with incredible lighting on her face - a beautiful cast shadow fell from her chin onto her shoulder. Her skin radiated warmth, and there are layers of burgundy, fuscia, olive green, orange, periwinkle, and violet in her skin tones.

The drawing measures 12" x 17" and is matted in a thin black border to 14" x 19". This drawing has been sprayed to help preserve the pastel and is signed by me, the artist. Will ship flat.

She tucked herself into the chair, creating a sense of being vulnerable yet having an inner strength. Incredibly feminine.

I started with a wash of light turquoise blue, after quickly sketching in the figure with a light pencil sketch. I layered washes of color and then defined the forms using a red line - a dramatic effect.

A bright and energetic drawing of the live nude model drawn with Nupastels on a piece of Mint pastel paper.

There are an infinite number of ways to capture a live model in a drawing. One technique I love to do is limit my palette to just a couple of colors, and capture the essence of the figure in just a few thoughtful lines and shapes.

Here I used an intense red piece of Nupastel to define her figure and the large shadow to the right. A little bit of white and peach give some warmth to her skin, and touches of blue show up in the shadows.

Simple, elegant, and sexy.

Drawn from the live nude model, using Nupastels on a cranberry mat board.

I love drawing on a dark background, especially cranberry. All of the colors I used in this drawing became intensified because of the color - the turquoise, gold, orange - everything has a wonderful glow.

The lighing on the female's back was so beautiful - the shadows formed by the overhead light, and the reflected golden warmth from the drapery she was laying on. Peaches and pinks and burgundy all show up in her shadows.

The Female Nude is a never ending source of inspiration in my work. The more I draw from the live model, the more I want to explore every possibility that is in front of me - how can I catch the light? What color is in the shadow? How can aI capture the figure's mood at this exact moment?

Sometimes, a simple addition of a scarf or a wrap injects a new element, as the Red Scarf did in this pose. The warm light on the red scarf was wonderful to capture in pastel!

I love the deceptive simplicity in this drawing. The model was sitting in such a lovely pose, her head turned slightly up and away, so I started by capturing the long graceful lines in her neck. From there I only hinted at her shoulders, defined her left breast, and drew in her arms and legs.

The color palette is very soft, creamy tans, with a little bit of cool blue and burnt sienna to define a few moments.

Nupastel and pastel pencil on Colorfix paper. Image size is 9" x 12". Matted in white to 11" x 14".

While I was drawing the live model, I was thinking about what were the most important aspects of the pose - the curve of her spine, the light falling on her face, the long lines of her leg. I focused on only those few elements, abstracting and emphasize their form.

I worked in acrylic on masonite, adding in a lot of color and texture. Also, at the client's request, I added additional variation to the background and detail to the Superman tattoo.

This original drawing of the live nude female model is charcoal on a cream pastel board (a masonite board w/ a coating that resembles very fine sandpaper). It has been sprayed and can be framed as-it, with or without glass. 12" x 16". Signed by me, the artist.

"The limits of your Language are the limits of your World".

That is a quote from Wittgenstein, and I actually keep that in mind as I draw - while he may have been referring to the written word, I think it can also apply to a "drawing language" - a variety of charcoal marks and charcoal application. From quick repititious line, to slow contour lines, washes of shadow and even to eraser marks, a variety of line makes for a richer drawing. Because I had so much "drawing language" at my disposal, I could create without limitation.

This drawing of the nude female model was created on my favorite new surface - Wallis paper. This paper is so much fun to work on. I can use watercolors or pastels, and layer colors on top of one another without worrying about getting too saturated!

I used a variety of beautiful blues and purples in this drawing, focusing most of my efforts on the gorgeous shadows that were created on her back. A bit of warmth sneaks in with reds and oranges.

This original drawing is on a 12" x 18" inch piece of Archival Wallis paper. It will come matted to 18" x 24" and is ready for framing. Signed by me, the artist. Will ship flat.

Some of my favorite drawings of the female model are quick, colorful studies that capture a sense of fun and femininity.

I utilized bright pastels to capture the light and shadows - including fuscia, hot pink, bright orange, turquoise and true blue. Black and white were used sparingly and defined a few key moments.

Our amazing live model struck this beautiful and complex pose on a couch in our drawing studio. Situated almost directly under a spotlight, dramatic shadows formed accross her torso and onto her legs.

I love the gesture of her arm accross her forehead...it makes me think of this pose as "The Fainting Couch"

Warm, earthy tones of orange, prussian blue, deep purple, sap green, and red.

She wore a geometric black bikini, that added some unique shapes to the overall composition. I used a combination of deep purple, prussian blue, light olive green and mint Nupastel.

This figure drawing would be a unique addition to your art collection.

For every woman that has that inner confidence. For every female that has her own strength. For every woman who speaks her mind.

I am so pleased to be able to offer to art collectors and movie lovers - in a very limited quantity - a fabulous reproduction of one of my favorite all-time portraits. "Katharine" was painted in 2004, and was the first in a series of portraits where I developed a unique style that incorporates both drawing with charcoal and painting with gesso. The resulting portrait stays true to the subject's likeness, yet has a modern painterly feel.

The reproduction is approx. 16" x 26" on canvas. (this is approx. 1/4 of the orignal size - see thumbnail) The sides are white and it will come pre-stretch on heavy-duty stretcher bars and wired for hanging.

I enhance each reproduction by hand with black and white paint, and then apply a coat of matt varnish to further protect and enhance the surface.

Each reproduction is signed and numbered by me, the artist.

This will be a very limited run - only 10 giclees of this size on canvas will be produced!

Until recently, I thought this was a fashion photo from Vogue Magazine. (see thumbnail)I am often inspired by images from fashion magazines and use them in my work. When I tore this page out, I did not realize that the image was used from a well-known photographer. Ignorance on my part is no excuse, but I do feel that the image was the inspiration for my piece, and that I did not just copy this photo and call it my own. I do not use photoshop or any other digital manipulation. All of my work is done by hand.

Original Mixed Media Figure Drawing

I love experimenting with new drawing techniques, and I found that Colorfix boards give me a lot of flexibility to do so. For this figure drawing, I started with a wash of black watercolor to define the shapes, then slowly built up color in the figure. If an area needed adjustment, I washed it away with water and started again! The result is a very complex, multi-faceted image with a lot of interesting mark-making and layering.

In some areas, the figure is well defined - such as her shoulder, while other areas are just a suggestion, or outline of the form, like her left foot. I see something new in the drawing every time I look at it!

Nupastel and watercolor on grey Colorfix board. Image size is 12" x 16" and board is 14" x 18". Drawing has been sprayed to help preserve the pastel and it is signed by me, the artist. This original drawing will ship FLAT.

This was an artist request of the model...let your hair down! We want to draw it! So she let her huge bun and the hair cascaded down her back. The lighting was dramatic. I loved finding the hot reddish undertones and bringing them out in the drawing.

***This piece was recently accepted to Southern Appalachian Artist Guilds' First National Juried Exhibition. ***

This painting began as a sketch from a live model. Then when I got home to my studio, I had a great time filling in the information either based on my memory of the figure or just by what colors I felt like adding in! Patterns, textures, and multiple media became layered over the original drawing. Then, if I felt like I had lost a good aspect of the drawing, out came the sandpaper and I sanded away, revealing the drawing underneath.

Color! I love color!

I have drawn this lovely model many times, and she has such great curves and every time she models I see a great variety of colors in her skin tones. This particular drawing really EXPLODED with color!

There are abstract elements, such as the outline of the highlight on the sholder on the right. The figure is defined in several ways - by shapes of color against each other, or lines drawn to show her curvatious form, or simply implied areas that are not defined at all, such as her cheek.

Drawn with Nupastel on Colorfix pastel paper. Image size is 9" x 12", and the paper is slightly larger with a 1/4" white border for matting and framing.

I love drawing from the live model. Our weekly figure drawing group draws for about 3 hours. The majority of the time I work on a pretty traditional drawing, trying to capture a true likeness of the model. But near the end of class I really let loose and have a little fun!

I love working with this particular model - she has an incredible strength, and this pose has kind of an "I am woman" stance to it! Her long, long hair frames the left side of her figure.

Modern Pastel Drawing of Nude Female Model

When I draw from the live model, sometime I dive right in and just let the drawing develop. Sometimes I'll slow down, and stare for a minute or so - looking for large, interesting shapes or curvy, feminine lines. It's those moments that I pushed further in this drawing, sometimes abstracting the information.

I used a very bright palette in this piece - hot pink, fuscia, and periwnkle blues. I used soft pastels and Nupastel on a piece of rose-colored pastel paper than has a very fine sandpaper-like texture.

A drawing with a lot of atmosphere. This is a very emotional pose, a lot of strength and inner dialogue is felt from the model. The model has an incredible ability to bring such depth to his pose.

Drawing of a live model in charcoal on gessoed watercolor paper mounted to foam core. It is drawn on top of layers of previous paintings, creating an interesting surface and a sense of history to the work. Soft light but a dramatic effect. Collectors will appreciate the subtle qualities of the pose and the technique, which reveal new moments every time you look at it.

I love drawing the figure, and often I find images in fashion magazines that inspire my work. This multi-media painting was based on a photo of five gorgeous models on a boat. I loved all the detail in their outfits - the ruffles, the jewels, the hairstyles. Each one had a unique look!

The original painting was layers os acrylic and charcoal, occassionally sanded down to reveal layers underneath, giving a sense of history - and mystery - to the surface.

This is a dye sublimation print on 8" x 10" glossy photo paper. The image size is approx. 7" x 9". Each print is signed by me, the artist, and will ship flat.

Original Figure Painting - Two Female Nudes

How lucky we were as a figure drawing group one Wednesday evening when we had these two lovely models pose for us. They were incredibly comfortable with each other, and you could feel that in their poses...their warmth and friendship. One model had deep, brown skintones and rich black hair...the other soft pink with warm blond hair. It was a striking and beautiful contrast.

This started out as a drawing on gessoed masonite board. The gesso was spread on much like a venetian plaster, giving a lot of texture and interest to the surfac. AS I drew, I used a wet brush to soften lines and move color into the atmosphere.

When I got the painting home, I added several layers of glaze to create a more dramatic environment and to enhance the colors of the skintones. The pairing of the two models has a sculptural feel to it.

This was SUCH a fun drawing to create! I used Nupastels on colorfix paper, blocking in highlights and shadows to create and abstract portrait of our beautiful model. Her black hair became dark blue with icy highlights, her arms are fuscia lined with lime green, the shadows chartreuse and robins egg blue.

Purple, lush drawing of a female nude. I love this long, stretched out pose...the lines of the legs, the curve of the spine, the arm resting on the pillow. Very classic and serene.

The paper is a textured pastel paper, in a unique color...not quite purple, not really grey...somewhere in between. But it's a great color to work on - I love the way the purples and oranges and turquoise all look against the surface.

I don't know why...but usually, when I am drawing the male nude, my color palette tends to be very subtle, lots of greys, neutrals or black and white. So one day, knowing that we were going to be drawing from the male nude, I gave myself a little pep talk..."Work with color! Have a little fun!" (It's just a naked man after all!)

I found this lovely nest while taking my dog for a walk the day after a pretty big wind storm...it inspired several pieces including "The Nest" and "Golden Nest" in my shop. You can see the delicate blue egg still nestled in the center of the nest.

Originally painted in oil and oil pastel on canvas. The print is on glossy dye sublimation paper, 8" x 10" with white border for framing.

Large Original Mixed Media Painting - The Nest

There was a period of time when I was "feathering" my own new nest...we had just moved into our 2nd home in Poquoson, VA. A storm had knocked a sweet little bird nest out of the tree across the street.

I brought the nest home and was inspired to create several smaller and this one larger painting. It is two pieces - 24" x24" canvas on the left (yellow backgraound) and a 24" x 24" wooden panel. There is a mix of traditional and modern materials - oil paint, oil pastel, spray paint, chalkboard paint, and chalk.

Overall size is 24" x 48", assembled.

I will dissassemble for shipping - all you have to do is re-attach the hardware on the back of the painting. (I will provide all the hardware)
