Down here in Lower Alabama the swamps and marshes are filled with these majestic birds, so regal in their posture and movements.

The largest and most widespread heron in North America,
the Great Blue Heron can be found along the ocean shore or the edge of a small inland pond. This one I spotted over at Week's Bay feeding in the cattails. Not an easy subject to sneak up on and observe and sketch.

Nature isn't always pretty. This 16x20 pencil study depicts a young wolf who has injured a hind leg during a hunt. Unable to keep up with the pack or hunt on his own, he is relegated to scavaging for leftovers. His life expectancy does not look good.

It takes guts for an artist to depict the ugly but real side of nature. Most show only the perfect and beautiful side of nature. It will also take guts for a collector to add such a drawing to their collection.

This is a study for a 16x20 oil painting. The drawing is done on 70lb. acid free paper. It has been sprayed with a mat finish to protect it from smudging. The image size is 11 1/2 x 15 1/5.

Red-Breasted Merganser

While canoeing down the Harpeth River in Tennessee I saw this Red-Breasted Merganser peacefully glide through the water not more than five feet from the canoe. What a joy it was to see, what an even greater joy it was to paint it.

Song of the Loon

Although this bird is referred to as "a common Loon" there is nothing common about them. If you have ever heard them late in the evening or early morning calling (singing) you know what I mean.

I tried really hard to capture the song of the Loon as I painted this, I hope you can hear it too.

It has a single coat of light varnish (thus the glare, I'm a painter not a photographer)

I painted this group of Macaws after I joined an online internet chatroom (Artists Cafe). There's not much else I can say about the painting, the painting says it all.Rather than artists helping other artists I found nothing but gossip.

It's always nice to do a painting that says what you feel or saw without having to explain alot about the work. With a minimum amount of brush strokes and detail, the birds say it all. Morning Gossip!

Going Home

I spotted this Wood Duck silently flying through the trees in Western Kentucky. The sun had just set and an evening mist was beginning to rise off the dense forest floor. Only his distinctive whistle alerted me to his presence.
He was obviously on his way to the nest for the night.
Wood Ducks are the only duck native to North America.

This painting was done on a 18x24 inch stretched canvas with Winsor Newton oil paints. It has never been varnished.
As you can see from most of my work .... I'm not big one for varnishing paintings. I think that is a choice for the collector to decide on ... to varnish or not to varnish.
This was painted in 1991 and has never been shown in a gallery or show.

Sunset Canvasbacks

The only thing better than a beautiful sunset is to share it with a flock of canvasback ducks. I saw these ducks flying along the banks of Lake Barkley. Looking for a place to settle in and rest for the night you can almost feel them hesitate as they spot me watching. This was one of those moments that had to be captured in a painting.

Painted in 1990, this was done on 18x24 inch canvasboard with Winsor Newton oil paints. It has a single light coat of varnish.
