I really love Lantern walk. It may be because I am a Harvest girl at heart. Or it may be that the feelings of this quiet festival really resonate with me. This is a festival that celebrates each person’s individual inner light and how they share that light with the world. It honors and protects the light—not only the light in ourselves, but the fading light from the sky. It is a festival that helps us get ready for the coming season of darkness which we celebrate by bringing in the light.

This little booklet will give you some history of Martinmas/Lantern Walk, tell you the story of St. Martin, and give you ideas for holding your very own Lantern Walk, be it with your family or a community celebration.

Included in the booklet:

* What exactly is Martinmas? And who is Martin? A brief history of this festival in the Waldorf calendar
* Getting ready, including directions to make two different types of lanterns and three Lantern Walk songs, complete with sheet music

First Grade Rose Ceremony for Waldorf Homeschoolers

In many Waldorf schools, moving into First Grade is marked with a ceremony. The ones I have heard of the most are Rose Ceremonies—the eighth grade class greets the new first grade class on the first day of school, acknowledging them with a rose. They then greet their Grade One teacher and begin their new work at the school.

Homeschoolers can have the benefit of this ceremony as well. I have had a small, private rose ceremony with both of my children before starting first grade, and the change in their demeanor and their own internal shift—so this is what it means to be a First Grader!—is palatable.

This little booklet will help you have your own rose ceremony for first grade. It includes:

* Setting up--preparing yourself and your space for the ceremony
* The ceremony--a basic outline complete with ideas and suggestions to make this ceremony your own
