Most nights, Thầy and I have some time to relax our feet together. He conks out and I play with his feet, and lazily he cleans my knuckles and the back of my hand. He is the supervisor cat, so he gets tired from all that daily monitoring. he takes his duties seriously. And when he crashes out with me, he shows his gratitude for sink-drinking, kitchen-floor snacks and other privileges with a mini-bath just for me. Isn't he thoughtful?

I adore silver cats, but this blue boy has so much zip, I was amazed when I met him. Also, he has THE SOFTEST FUR EVER - no guard hairs or something. He's playful, pensive, full of nom nom and chat. I sincerely hope he finds a home soon!

This doesn't happen often. Tort is 3 and still as obnoxious as he was at 3 months. But here, I was able to catch his arm freshly washed and his toes temporarily relaxed.

Apparently, I wasn't on Cheddar's agenda after the day I took this photo of him. He was a very sweet teen-aged cat, a member of the feral colony I care for (The Cheese Gang). I think he must have been a dump-off kitty, which is tragic because he was so incredibly personable and trusting. He had the wild boy in him, too, though, and after a nice visit he decided it was time for some bugs.

Sadly, I learned that My Darling Cheddar was killed by a car in the alley behind the abandoned house where he lived a few short days after our photo session. Too trusting, not wild enough, I guess. I'm very sad, but I'm happy that I can share even just his feet with you!

Usually, Zeb likes to stretch himself out into the longest, thinnest possible blue stripey noodle. Occasionally, though, he actually curls up like a CAT and sleeps in a kitty domicile of some sort. I caught him in a rare outdoor, in-the-condo nap and had to show all his amazing claws. Even in repose, he's showing off his toes.

Shukran, a prematurely weaned foundling, started as a foster cat. The new owner, however, disappeared on me, and the shelters aren't taking new cats. That means I'm a mommy. Again. I didn't mean to fall in love, but who can help it when made into a sleeping mat and teething ring by a ball of fur.

Cheddar was an insanely soft, trusting & friendly local feral cat. He let me photograph his toes, which was very generous. He, like all cats, saw bugs that weren't there. This is about his efforts to reach them.

This kitten had just played with friends, been handled by humans, eaten some "squishy" food, and finally got a chance to nap before being returned to a cleaned cage. So, of course, somebody decided to start poking the sleeping kitten. The feline tolerance I observed merited this photo and haiku.

Shukran, once my foster kitty and now my youngest, loves a good tummy tickle. Increasingly, she sees this as an opportunity to bite, but when about 2 months old, as here, she could be pleasantly distracted by a nip at the tummy. The distraction: "how do I get up?", but she's figured it out now. Just inflict pain. Now, I'm the nosh.

Yes, Zeb got into a fight with a 12"-wide bat. I saw it. Before the sun rose, Zeb, Thầy and I went out onto the balcony for some air, some iced latte (for me) and a glimpse of the sunrise. I heard "flup flup fluh" as something flew up to the eaves of my 3rd-floor balcony, then flup fluh" as it flew away, and another "fluh fluh flup" as it flew to the very edge of the balcony's floor. Zeb was watching intently and was there to greet our visitor. I expected a confused bird, but no! It was a bat.

Zeb was the initial victor, getting hold of it with paws and mouth. He didn't count on Batty's teeth, though. As I heard a combination meow-growl repeating I saw Zeb emerging from the dark recesses - he had let go of Batty, but Batty hadn't let go of Zeb. Poor Zeb shook his arm vigorously to dislodge Batty, but Batty hung on. It degenerated to a snapping war a minute later when Zeb got loose but Batty was stuck on the balcony. He (she?) lay flat out on his/her tummy, wings spread to full length. His/her head swiveled in a rightfully paranoid fashion; every time Zeb or Thầy approached to sniff and say "You dead yet?" Batty would snap tiny jaws and wicked teeth at them. I ran for my camera; a few minutes later I returned to find the bat was gone, and Zeb was cleaning up. Batty survived! Hope that Zeb doesn't do anything that dumb again.

UPDATE: Zeb's 10-day period of sequester proved that he does not have rabies! He's just a ditz with a talent for catching flying things.

Tort is the only cat so far I've named for my law school years. He can be extremely toxic, in many ways, but he's only 4. I guess he's allowed. He's part-Himalayan with 5"-long fur in shades of silver and brown mixed with black. His fur is so long he can clean his own chin, and he loves to show this off.

Eunice is a sweet, wonderful shelter cat. She was no more than 6 months old here, but already she was beginning to show signs of depression and stress from being in a shelter cage. No amount of holding or cooing would make a difference. It broke my heart and I wished her a good home soon. (UPDATE: She did!!)

What is it with tan and black tabby cats? Are they ALL obsessed by water and drinking from faucets? Two of my cats in recent years have been of this coloring, and they're both out of control with the sink and tub. Sometimes they even walk between the shower curtains and listen to the water.
