I was struggling with a lot of things when I made the original painted paper collage this print was made from. We had moved our family from San Francisco to the east coast. We hadn't been here for more than a few months when the attack on the twin towers happened. My husband was working in the area at the time, and we felt vulnerable and shaken.

Needless to say, there was a lot going on. I still wasn't sure if I had found my path artistically, and fought like hell with this particular piece. In the end I think we came to terms. It's now one of my favorites; it remind me of the struggles I can make it though both as a family and artistically, and how beautiful life is, still!

This Print is of a painted paper collage I did in 2003. I named it Push because the little character in the middle looks like she's about to give birth!

Making this piece was almost like giving birth. If you zoom in on the detail shots, you'll notice that almost every tiny dot in this piece is cut out buy hand, no punches, just me and my trusty Tweezerman scissors!.

Through the years it's gotten easier to part with artwork that I have sold. But recently, I sold the original to the loveliest woman who came to visit my studio. When she was leaving with Push, I felt like she was taking my child.

The painting this print is made from was done in 2006. I was listening to Patti Smith's Horses a lot while painting. There's a very cool song on that CD called Birdland, that was the inspiration for this piece. I pictured the place to be atmospheric and lush – kind of peaceful…
Last spring, we adopted a baby sun conure named Bozzie. She has a scream that could pierce your eardrums. This wasn't the Birdland I had imagined!

I have a permanent callous on my thumb from cutting all these flowers. I think I counted them once, and it was something like 650 flowers and 200 circles. Each shape is cut out from paper that I hand painted. This piece is very dear to me — mainly because I don't think I'll ever have the patience to do another like it!

I like to think of this piece as a metaphor for the world; All the bits and pieces so different in color and shape. (It seems like every color is represented in this rainbow-riot.) It was a challenge to make all these colors work together. I think the end result is beautiful, and so much better than the sum of it's parts.

On the original, each tiny piece is cut by me, from paper that I previously painted. Tiny little circles and squares cut with my loving hands and my trusty scissors. Then I stitched the whole thing together with golden thread.

The original of this piece is a marriage between my Quiltage work, and my paintings on panel. The base surface is a quilted collage, and then I built up layer upon layer of acrylic medium, paint and painted paper to give a feeling of depth.

Printed on premium matte paper with archival inks. Signed and dated on the front. Packaged in a cello sleeve, and stiff backing for safe arrival to it's new home!

Image size: 9.5 x 7 inches
Paper size: 8.5 x 11 inches

Sized to fit into an 8 x 10 mat or frame, with breathing room. If you'd prefer a different size, let me know.
