City Lights earrings - with recycled cardboard

For all the people who have been interested in my banner art, here's something!

Here's a pair of completely handmade lightweight papier mache earrings, materials are cardboard (mainly cereal boxes)and acid-free paper. Each earring is unique and hand-drawn on both sides, and then coated with spray-enamel that is meant for childrens' toys (so I assume it would be allright for earrings, too). Front side is covered three and backside two times. That also makes them water-resistant, though not waterproof. So if you have rainy climate, I recommend you take them off when it's pouring down. :)

They have two layers of cardboard in them, and although I have taken every precaution to press them together properly, little stripes may appear on the edges. That does not mean your earrings are breaking. These "holes" have been filled with white glue and pressed together again. Anything that remains seen is actually glue, since it dries to be transparent.

Sadly, some of them may have a bit of the original cardboard design glowing through the backside, but it is not awfully distinctive and drawings on back should distract anyone's eye. (Also, the attachment of the earwires ensures that they always turn their frontside outwards.) This happened because when making first "model" earrings I didn't spray the backsides properly. In the future I will simply turn the colourful sides of cardboard pieces facing each other. Until then though, you get this lot cheaply!

Each pair of earrings will come in its own little envelope, completely handmade and handdrawn, and tied with little red ribbon, which makes it a nice gift for birthdays and Christmas. The envelope shown on the photo is just and example, but it will generally look the same.

These earrings measure ca. 3,9 cm (1 1/2 in) in diameter.

Earwires are handmade of silver-coated copper wire, since I am not wealthy enough to buy proper silver wire yet. ;)

Inspiration for these designs and drawings comes from old estonian embroidery, especially Halliste and Muhu aprons, Björk, some of my friends and childrens books illustrations.

I sincerely do hope you like them and find them suitable for you. Because I love them.

Soft Baby Rainbow ball - upcycled fabrics

When my sister was little, she had a lovely ball made of very soft leather or vinyl pentagons. We loved it and continued playing with it long after she was a baby, until we broke it. Now, just because I liked it so much, I made one for my little daughter, with upcycled fabrics, and thought that maybe some of you would like one (or a few :)) as well.
Note: This ball on the photo is the one I made for my baby. I will make you a new one.

The ball will be made of upcycled clothes, every pentagon is of different fabric and colour. There are a few different textures, like corduroy, terry and flannel. I have replaced the tartan pattern with light blue. Every seam on this ball will be double hand-stitched and the ball stuffed with about 60% polyester toy filling and 40% little fabric scraps, so it's even more recycled! And since it is soft, your little one will be able to grab it easily even with one hand. If you wish, I can add a little bell or sew a bit of crackly plastic under some pentagons.

In the end this little ball will measure about 10 cm (4 in) in diameter and weigh about 60g.

I made this lovely chunky OOAK scarflette in the spring, so it has waited for the whole summer to find a new home! Now that the autumn is coming, don't wait until it's cold before getting new cute scarf!

It is crocheted from soft creamy acrylic yarn and the little roundels have been crocheted from soft acrylic and upcycled yarns as well. Completely sheep-friendly!

It fastens quickly with three handmade hooks. If you are unsure, though, I can put a few buttons on. Don't hesitate to ask!

Measures 10,5 cm x 60 cm (4 1/4 in x 24 in). That means it is long enough to wrap it around your chin as well on a cold day!

I made these long ribbed light turquoise gloves last winter, and embroidered them with frost flowers, like the ones you sometimes get on your windows. I have never embroidered anything on gloves, so this was a new thing for me to do. It came out quite well, methinks!

These gloves are fully acrylic and therefore should be completely washing machine safe. I am quite confident in my embroidering skills as well, but just in case you can put them in a washing bag. They are quite stretchy and should fit average woman from the age of 13.

Feel like the real Snow Queen in the fairytale with this scarflette!

This OOAK wonderful, thick, almost sculpture-like scarflette was lovingly hand-crocheted of white soft acrylic yarn and then embellished with vintage plastic buttons that have metallic/mother of pearl look to create the look of light-catching ice and snow. It has four little buttons for fastening. Since this scarf does not have special button holes, but is holy by the pattern, you can fasten it up any way you like!

The scarf measures 11,5 cm x 65 cm (4 1/2 in x 26 in). That means it is long enough to wrap it around your chin as well on a cold day!

Another truly OOAK soft, chunky and funky scarflette. I did struggle with this one. After finishing the Cream and Candy scarflette, I knew it had to have similar embellishments, I only didn't know what colour and arrangement they should be. I did want it to look interesting, yet masculine as well. There aren't enough accessories made for men, you know! So here it is. Androgynous, I'd say.

It is crocheted from soft navy acrylic yarn and the little roundels have been crocheted from soft acrylic and upcycled yarns as well. Completely sheep-friendly!

This is my legacy. I knitted my first pair of these type mittens when I was thirteen. And I have loved these old patterns ever since. They are detailed enough to look lovely on woman's hand, and geometrical enough to look good on a man's hand as well.

This listing is for one pair of Nordic - in this case Estonian - mittens or fingerless gloves. They will be lovingly made of soft acrylic yarn just for you. Note: these are just few patterns I have collected in the Internet.

In the past, common colour combinations were natural black and white (cream), dark red and white, dark blue and white, black and yellow, brown and yellow. My grandmother also made some mittens with dark brown plus different colours for the other half of the pattern. I had a favourite pair of mittens that had little pink and red flowers with two different coloured green leaves on them. Since she comes nearly from the border between Estonia and Latvia, I think there may have been Latvian influences. :) Of course, you can choose whatever colours you like! Just see the fifth photo.

*Approximate size of your hands (or the person's you are giving them)

Hippie Girl Headband

As a tribute to Woodstock, I made this headband/necklace with upcycled fabrics. It is OOAK and looks gorgeous, methinks. I would wear it any day. :)

This headband was made with upcycled fabrics only, and thread. It fastens with a knot pushed through the other end of the braid and leaves shortish pieces of fabric hanging at the back. It is machine washing proof, you should need it, but I would recommend putting it into a washing pouch before and running a mild cycle at 40 degrees.

Do you like this, but would prefer different colours? Tell me and I'll try to sort it out. Please note: It may take about a week to make.

This headband will come in its own pouch made of tie-dyed fabric.

Triangular Pencil Case - Upcycled Materials

I am so proud of this. I got inspiration from recycled pencils I saw here in Etsy and thought I'd try to make a triangular pencil case. And naturally, because I am a rubbish artist, I simply had to use cereal boxes and upcycled envelopes! Even the ribbon I braided myself from unused yarn that is too short to knit with, but still long enough to embroider (or, braid. :) I don't think that I can call it exactly eco-friendly, because I did use aerosol spray enamel, but it is pretty close.

This pencil case will hold 12+2 pencils, a shortish ruler and little rubber and pencil sharpener. Unsharpened pencils won't let the lid close properly, but the lid is tight enough to stay on. Of course, you could use it for something else, like crochet hooks! :)

It is quite expensive, but it took long time and much measuring to make and quite a bit of the money will go to good cause. Thanks so much!

Upcycled Candy Pencil Tube

I made this little beauty after making a rattle from Pringles tube for my little baby, and having used Fruit Pastilles tube for my pencils and crochet hooks for a while. This is a kind of mix of the two. :D

It uses upcycled Cadbury's Chocolate Eggs tube, yellow coloured paper and colourful little circles - all cut out from junk mail pages! And a bit of double-sided tape and adhesive film for textbooks.

It holds surprisingly big amount of pencils, considering how tiny it looks, and crochet hooks. Unsharpened pencils don't fit, though. You have to sharpen them about twice before they do. It's a cutey, get it before someone else does! I am not sure I'll be making them again!

I love recycling, if you are at all familiar with me, you know that. Recently I found a lovely old desk calendar, completely unused, with sturdy pages for weeks alternating with pages of photos with animals from all over the world. I was immediately hooked and finally decided what to do with it. I cut out all the white pages and made leaf-shaped tags from them.

These six have bits from envelopes with dark blue patterns inside glued onto them. You can decorate them however you like, or leave them as they are. The leaves measure about 10 cm (4 in) from tip to tip. They come with cottong string tied onto them.

Check out the other tags as well. I have a few more unused packs of 6, so if you wish for a different number or design on the leaves, I can provide it.

10 Dinky Envelopes

Have you ever noticed the cute patterns inside envelopes? Well, these ten little envelopes have been envelopes before, only bigger. They have been carefully hand-cut and glued.

You will receive ten random different envelopes, pakced nicely into a page of vintage book. I have added little labels for the front, but not for the back, because you can just slip the top under the edge of the bottom tab. Or get some nice stickers that you like!
