Cloak or Cape Fastener

This ornate fastener is made from a lightweight metal, colored gold and given an 'antique' finish. Two gold colored shield-shaped buttons support the loop of chain, which is attached to one button only, leaving you free to loop it over the other button when in use.

Condition: the fastener has a few small scratches on the reverse, although it is actually an unused item, probably of modern origin.

These buttons were previously stock from a Movie Studio in England (I believe it was Shepperton Studios). They are probably decorative costume buttons - perhaps with an Egyptian feel, being gold color metal with turquoise circles applied. They are reused, vintage buttons.

Condition: One button has paler turquoise coloring than the other buttons, showing more wear. The buttons are probably not suitable for washing and would suit a more decorative use.

These beautiful buttons have a domed shape with drilled self shanks. The upper surface has diamond-shaped facets to catch and reflect the light. They have a coating of luster, which is just showing a touch of wear (please see photos).

Approx size:- 5/8" (1.5 cm) diameter; 5/8" (1.5 cm) height

The buttons I bought with this pair dated from the 1980s, so these may be of a similar age. The seller tells me that they were originally made for the 'haute couture' market. I can see a couple of minute 'nibbles' to the sides of these buttons - very minor.

"For Baby" Babywear Buttons, part of the "Lucky Lady" Series. The card is also marked "ART. 22", "They boil, iron, dry clean" and "Foreign".

A small, seated baby figure holds two balloons, each one presenting a set of baby buttons. One set of seven are small, two hole, pale yellow in color and very simple in design. The second set of six, are shank buttons with a plain, pale yellow top.

Condition: the card is rather grubby on the reverse and shows some slight creasing and surface and edge wear.

A set of 23 unusual vintage beads. They are cyclindrical in shape with a fairly narrow hole drilled centrally along the length.

They appear to be made by a crafts person (rather than factory-made), probably balsa wood, painted in one of two shades of green:- olive and olive drab. They have a paler yellowish green spatter pattern all over.

These unusual vintage plastic buttons are a pale tea green color. The shape is seed like - or like the upturned hull of a boat, with a molded self-shank on the reverse.

The color has probably faded over the years and the buttons now show a variation of color - some are slightly yellowish, some have a faint blue tint - very pretty!

Condition: I have photographed these buttons from front and back, as some show damage to the underside shank. They are all usable and the damage does not show from the top.

These pretty buttons are a stylized daisy or flower form with touches of silver luster at the outer border and around the central domed area. They are made from transparent glass with molded shanks.

Three vintage black glass buttons with a gold luster applied to the upper surface. They have a cut glass pattern like a flower in the center, with a rope design border.

Two of the buttons are in good condition - it is possible to see a few minor chips under the gold luster - ie formed at the manufacturing stage, however, one button has a chip on the top, which is visible in the photos (button on the left of the picture).

Three small, vintage ceramic studio buttons. These follow in the 'Ruskin' tradition of handmaking buttons from glazed ceramics, although these are by an unknown maker.

There are three different colour glazes:- cream/oatmeal; tan; and purple/brown. The underneath is unglazed, with a self shank.

Condition: the cream button has small surface scratches; the purple/brown button has a small air bubble in the glaze. You can see 'crazing' on the glaze under magnification.

Steel buttons were popular on women's clothing in the nineteenth century.

These four buttons are made from stamped steel (made to imitate the more expensive cut and riveted steel buttons of the time), and are attached in a single piece to the base of the button - made of a reddish metal, perhaps copper.

Condition: slight corrosion just showing in a few places. Two of the shanks are squashed (but still present).
