This is an original encaustic painting.

Composed of hand drawn/cut paper collage elements and lunaria seed pods, I melt layers of encaustic wax to seal everything into place. Once dried, the encaustic creates a natural matte finish, which I then buff to an ultra soft, sateen sheen. The melting/layering nature of encaustic creates a finished surface that is somewhat uneven; thick in some areas, while thinner in others...it has a true feel of handmade in each piece! The encaustic also dries to a warm, see-through, whitish to buttery yellow glow and reveals a soft beeswax aroma.

*This piece costs a bit more than others of the same style/size, but there are many more layers of depth/material to this piece that you get lost in it....yes, it is worth it!

I LOVE SPRING! It is truly my favorite season and I eagerly await all the early returns that show up in the forms of budding trees and shrubs, feeding my thirst for more material to sketch.
But even more: I love the plants that have sustained the harsh winter conditions and still stand tall, color drained, yet somehow they speak to me amidst the clear blue skies, glimmering in the bright sunlight, as if to say, 'here I am; I have made it another year! Look at me!'

This is a illustration done with permanent pen, pigmented india inks and acrylic. The drawing was done in a black, permanent india ink pen on 4ply vellum bristol. I applied pigmented india inks to add color and then layered a thin wash of iridescent pearl acrylic onto the pods to give them a shiny, yet aged appearance.

This is a illustration done with permanent pen, pigmented india inks and acrylic. The drawing was done in a black, permanent india ink pen on 4ply vellum bristol. I applied pigmented india inks to add color and then layered a thin wash of iridescent pearl acrylic onto the pods to give them a shiny, yet aged appearance.

The Windrushes

The leaves fall to the ground, like birds taking flight...
...except in this case, the birds take a break and catch a flight instead.

This piece combines painting, stenciling, and collage to create a one of a kind piece. The underpainting consists of the blue, pink and red berried trees, which now appear as abstact bubbles. The next layer is the brown...which is an overpainting in which I added stencils to see that blue/pink underpainting. On the final layer, I collaged birds that I painted and drew on the pages of an old fiction book.

This piece was inspired by the bloodroot plant.
While taking my daily walk, I pass by this plant many times on the roadsides in spring. The shape of the leaves is one that is both curvy and seductive...and yet, it only puts forth a small white flower that unfurls for but a short time, before the whole plant curls in upon itself, almost like a bat! In this piece, I used the colors that influenced me the most about this plant.....the pale yellows and whites that bloodroot turns well into its state of decay.....soft, simple, seductive.
