Gocco Art PRINT - Tropical Palm Tree Coconuts - with Watercolor

This is a limited edition, hand-pulled gocco art print, highlighted with warm, sunset hues of watercolor.

This gnarled palm lives on top of Cave Mountain, in the hills of Westmoreland, Jamaica. Unlike it's swaying cousins on the beach, these palms stand erect, unwavering, like sentries guarding the property. It has no doubt withstood bracing winds on top of Cave, and the occasional hurricane.

I sketched it quickly in my notebook, with a rapidograph ink pen. My 11-year-old daughter, a budding shutterbug, took some photos of me while I drew.

After returning to NYC, I transferred my drawing onto a screen of my new Gocco printer, making 50 small (4"x6") prints of the original drawing. The prints were made on Canson 140lb cold press watercolor paper.

This listing is for the print, number 3/50, in the edition, signed by me, and mounted in a beautiful Nielsen Bainbridge double thick, white matte with bevel. The mat measures 11"x14" with a 4"x6" opening.

Originally a simple black-ink-on-paper print of the series, I have hand painted the colorful details in watercolor, making this a true one of a kind print.

The mat is museum grade, made of 100% archival 8-ply rag. It is backed with an archival mounting board.

Note: I made close up scans of the print before numbering signing; the signature and number appear in the wider shot in the mat.

These are nameless faces, all literally Strangers on a Train. Every day on the subway is a different show, a rich pageant of life, people whom I've never seen before and are likely never to see again. I like to look at faces and imagine what they will look like 20 years hence. Or the reverse, if they are elderly, and picture what they may have looked like when in the flush of youth.

So I have no stories to tell for these portraits -- I'll have to let the images

I turned my attention from the colorful flowers and coconuts on Negril Beach for a moment and focused on this beautiful shell.

The rough brown paper in my cache of drawing supplies was the perfect medium for drawing this conch. Each time I drew the shell it appeared as if were nestling in a mound of sand.

We stay in a spacious cottage at a place called Whistling Bird when we visit Jamaica. An open air verandah provides lush views of fruit trees, flowers and plants. It's a jungle out there.

Huge flapping banana leaves -- at least that's what I call them -- provide a natural fence and some privacy. And a perfect subject for painting.

I've painted them over and over, each time trying out a new way to see something that most of us pass by without giving a second thought. Some folks give me the crazy side-eye when they look at all the colors I use, as if I'm hallucinating.

I could paint them all green, but what's the joy in that?

I love coconuts and palms, I return to them time and time again. I don't think of them in the traditional sense, not as just a part of a landscape, an image in the background, but as living creatures. They have a personality, if you look closely.

The plump, sensuous shapes of the coconuts offset by the spiny roots that shoot off of them -- makes me think of young women surrounded by the bony pointed finger of a protective grandmother saying, "Stand back, keep away, she's not ready for picking!"

I've sketched and painted many of these palm trees and coconuts, this particular view of a bountiful tree on a beach in Jamaica.

Does this make you think of anything other than the obvious?

As I sat on a Jamaican beach, putting a few finishing touches on this painting, a local artist approached me to check out my work. He examined this sagging palm tree painting -- not your typical happy-landscape-in-the-tropics -- and said, "You've painted a tired old woman, haven't you? It's not just a palm tree. Can you see her?"

I looked down at the painting and he was right. I saw her pose, the curve and sway of her hips. An overworked woman at the end of her day. Or maybe near the end of her life. Deep.

I suddenly realized I had a story to tell to accompany this painting -- and a title for the piece: "The Flight Attendant's Palm".

"Mi cyan't find mi sista cell phone. A wheh it deh?"

We were driving back to Negril after spending the day in Sav La Mar. I had no idea where the cell phone could be. I had no use for it myself. This was the first year cell phones began to pop up all over Jamaica and I hadn't quite gotten used to the idea that you could actually reach someone without resorting to the rural grapevine. Which was, incidentally, a remarkably reliable method of contacting folks.

Frighteningly reliable, now that I think about it.

But cell phones had arrived. We'd actually brought this particular cell phone down for Felicia just so that we could stay in touch with the family directly, rather than depend upon the sole neighbor who owned an actual land-line phone. A cell phone became THE prized luxury accessory of the season, better than a gold chain. Even if you had no battery charger to keep it functioning, hell, even if it had no battery aTALL, wearing a cell phone prominently clipped to your pants waist was even better than a new pair of Clarks.

And ours was missing.........

We stay in a spacious cottage at a place called Whistling Bird when we visit Jamaica. An open air verandah provides lush views of fruit trees, flowers and plants. It's a jungle out there.

Huge flapping banana leaves -- at least that's what I call them -- provide a natural fence and some privacy. And a perfect subject for painting.

I've painted them over and over, each time trying out a new way to see something that most of us pass by without giving a second thought. Some folks give me the crazy side-eye when they look at all the colors I use, as if I'm hallucinating.

I could paint them all green, but what's the joy in that?

Although Flash lives in the family yard in Sav La Mar, he is often stationed on Negril beach, "a werk 'im a werk". Lord knows where he sleeps at night. All I know is that when I get up early in the morning to make myself some coffee, Flash is already out on our verandah, heating up a pot of water for morning tea or cleaning callaloo for our breakfast. Rudy, on the other hand, will still be asleep on a beach chair that he'd drawn up in the shade, still wearing his shoes.

I love coconuts and palms, I return to them time and time again. I don't think of them in the traditional sense, not as just a part of a landscape, an image in the background, but as living creatures. They have a personality, if you look closely.

The plump, sensuous shapes of the coconuts offset by the spiny roots that shoot off of them -- makes me think of young women surrounded by the bony pointed finger of a protective grandmother saying, "Stand back, keep away, she's not ready for picking!"

I've sketched and painted many of these palm trees and coconuts, this particular view of a bountiful tree on a beach in Jamaica.

I don't have a good story about Rudy today -- I have a hundred good stories about Rudy. None of which he'd probably like me to share with you.

Our constant companion from the minute we arrive in Negril,Jamaica, Rudy has become like a member of the family, albeit the black sheep. I'm told that Rudy used to dress sharp with "shiney genkle-man shoes an' trousahs well pressed an' neat", but lately Rudy looks like a hundred miles of back-country road.

PRINT - Jamaican Woman Portrait, Ink and Watercolor Painting

Peter had disappeared briefly after I was admitted to the hospital and suddenly re-appeared, bearing in one hand a small plastic bag filled with peeled oranges and cut-up pineapple and in the other, a small neat suitcase. Behind him stood a tiny, older woman with a cluster of short braids peeking out from under a turned-backward baseball cap. She wore a delicately flowered short-sleeved shirt, and a dark cotton skirt which hung below her knees. I couldn't see her feet.

"This is my mother."

Oh my. I offered my hand and introduced myself. And she shook it with a shy smile.... Miss Una had packed me some sheets and proceeded to help make my bed. After the orderlies gently moved me from the gurney, I made room for Miss Una to sit near my feet. She gently smoothed the sheets but didn't speak much, except for a single word or two, and only when I spoke to her.

Under the circumstances, small talk was virtually impossible. She was inscrutable. I offered her one of the oranges Peter had brought me. We both chomped away on them, it was a good alternative to conversation.

A wise painting teacher of mine once told me, "Never fall in love with your own work."

But I love this painting. Can't help it.

As I've mentioned in other listings, our Jamaican getaway is enveloped by a large swath of these tall, swaying banana leaves. They flap and flutter in the breeze during the day and become still during the evening, save for the lizards that scuttle across their flanks.

When the sun falls, their colors change, the shadows deepen. But they retain their sensuous shapes, each with its own personality. They are like a crowd of silent onlookers, watching over us during the night.

Sweet little Shara, a Jamaican girl from the family yard. I've painted her many times, most often when she sat just inside the doorway of her little board house, her wide eyes just gazing at me, watching my every move, holding a bowl of porridge on her lap.

She looks a bit sad, and probably is often enough, but when she smiles, it's a bright light. I've painted a dark a gloomy version of Shara, but this -- this is Shara with her colorful soul shining.

I'm not going to tell you his name. It doesn't really matter.

But you should know that I thought he was one of the "bredren," a good egg, as my parents might say. An "ital" rasta man, as the natty dreadlocks would agree. Righteous, seen........

I dutifully bought Natty one cold Heineken. Then he pulled me close. He whispered in my ear, "Wha mi really wan is sum money fi pay mi real estate taxes. Mi need $150 Jays, miss, cyaann yuh help mi nuh?"
(translation: What I really want is some money to pay my real estate taxes. I need $150 Jamaican dollars, miss, can you help me?)

For those of you who don't know, $150 Jamaican dollars was the equivalent of about U.S. $2.50 at the time. Yes, that's right. About two U.S. dollars and fifty cents.

For his "real estate taxes" he says.

When I shared this story with my husband and his friends, they all laughed softly, but with sadness. "The Rock hole 'im dung, mon. Nuh give 'im nuttin more," and they shook their heads.
(translation: Crack cocaine is holding him down, man. Don't give him anything more.)

"Toxes, eeenh? Natty nah own nuttin fi tox. A crack-cocaine a 'im biggest tox. He muss pay it......"
(no translation necessary)

I love drawing and painting these -- and not in the multiple shades of green they wear, but in my own colors, as I see them, their true colors.

When we are in Jamaica, there seems to be an endless stream of folks passing through, dropping in, giving us a check. Only a handful have been given the closely-guarded secret of our arrival date, an even smaller number have actually been invited to come visit us. But many have heard through the sea-grapevine that we are in town and they come, seemingly by the dozens, day after day after day.

I'm a bit of a recluse myself. It's an adjustment.

Don't get me wrong. There are folks I'm delighted to see, to catch up on what they've been up to since we've seen them last. We gossip and laugh about life in yard. True friends.

But then there are the rest.

You know who I mean. You've heard of Empty Nesters? Well I call the unwelcome visitors the Empty Guest-ers. They come empty handed. With empty bellies. And empty wallets. Guess what else is empty? Their schedule! They come to spend the entire day with us, wonderful news, no?

And so it was with Nadine, who knocked on our door early one morning.

We stay in a spacious cottage at a place called Whistling Bird when we visit Jamaica. An open air verandah provides lush views of fruit trees, flowers and plants. It's a jungle out there.

Huge flapping banana leaves -- at least that's what I call them -- provide a natural fence and some privacy. And a perfect subject for painting.

I've painted them over and over, each time trying out a new way to see something that most of us pass by without giving a second thought. Some folks give me the crazy side-eye when they look at all the colors I use, as if I'm hallucinating.

I could paint them all green, but what's the joy in that?

Hey girls, you take your own table this morning. Mommy and Dads are dining alone today. Banana pancakes with sliced pawpaw for the pickney. Cheese omelette with callaloo and passion fruit for us.

"Just Natural" is one of the sweetest spots to eat on the West End in Negril, Jamaica. Opposite the cliffs on the roadside and tucked away behind a jungle of flowers. Hidden delight. Mangos, turquoise and lime green hues.

This is Reggie.

Well, at least for about a dozen years I thought his name was Reggie. Turns out his name is Cleveland. I guess if you are a young man growing up in rural Jamaica, you are as anxious to shed the name "Cleveland" as you are to shed your status as a "likkle bwoy" (little boy).

Cleveland became Reggie after repeated bredren viewings of "48 Hours", wherein Eddie Murphy, aka Reggie Hammond, announces the aforementioned sheriff line. I didn't learn this bit of history until many years later, when addressing a piece of mail to this gentleman and was laughed out of the room when I wrote "Reggie" on the envelope. It wouldn't be the first time I mistook a nickname for the real thing..............................

I love coconuts and palms, I return to them time and time again. I don't think of them in the traditional sense, not as just a part of a landscape, an image in the background, but as living creatures. They have a personality, if you look closely.

The plump, sensuous shapes of the coconuts offset by the spiny roots that shoot off of them -- makes me think of young women surrounded by the bony pointed finger of a protective grandmother saying, "Stand back, keep away, she's not ready for picking!"

I've sketched and painted many of these palm trees and coconuts, this particular view of a bountiful tree on a beach in Jamaica.

This is Shara. Another little child of a country yard in Westmoreland, Jamaica. She's sitting just inside the doorway of her grandmother's tiny wooden clapboard house, which sits about 3 feet off the ground, each corner barely balanced on a rickety pile of misshapen stones. It's hot outside. Not so cool inside "nydah" but she's cooler in the shadows.

Does this make you think of anything other than the obvious?

As I sat on a Jamaican beach, putting a few finishing touches on this painting, a local artist approached me to check out my work. He examined this sagging palm tree painting -- not your typical happy-landscape-in-the-tropics -- and said, "You've painted a tired old woman, haven't you? It's not just a palm tree. Can you see her?"

I looked down at the painting and he was right. I saw her pose, the curve and sway of her hips. An overworked woman at the end of her day. Or maybe near the end of her life. Deep.

I suddenly realized I had a story to tell to accompany this painting -- and a title for the piece: "The Flight Attendant's Palm".

Someone in Jamaica told me that my ink drawings of palm trees were "scary." Made me wonder if that is the feeling I must be having as I draw them.......why would that be the case?

They are beautifully graceful. They grow in sand. They are watered by rain but also by the relentless washing of salt water from the sea. Hardly scary, they not only survive the relentless heat of the sun and ocean, they THRIVE.

I love drawing portraits, and the twisted, tubular dreads are like sculpture come to life -- a pleasure to draw. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I'd been painting portraits, posting them on my blog and writing off-the-top-of-my-head stories to accompany many of them, and was wondering where I would go next.

The portraits and stories had all come flooding out of me over several months and my readers clamored for more.

But I was depleted. At least temporarily. I had no face I wanted to paint, no story I wanted to tell. I just needed to let myself soak up my surroundings and let the people and stories find me.

I was left with my immediate friends and my imagination. Combining the two, I made several sketches of this worn-out gentleman on a piece of brown butcher paper, using a rapidograph pen with india ink, topped off with white highlights.

Serious man, no?

We stay in a spacious cottage at a place called Whistling Bird when we visit Jamaica. An open air verandah provides lush views of fruit trees, flowers and plants. It's a jungle out there.

Huge flapping banana leaves -- at least that's what I call them -- provide a natural fence and some privacy. And a perfect subject for painting.

I've painted them over and over, each time trying out a new way to see something that most of us pass by without giving a second thought. Some folks give me the crazy side-eye when they look at all the colors I use, as if I'm hallucinating.

I could paint them all green, but what's the joy in that?

When you think of the tropics you don't typically think of grapes. But walk along any beach in Jamaica and you'll see incredibly sumptuous Sea Grape trees, often side-by-side with their more familiar neighbors, the palm.

Sea Grape trees and their leaves were the first things I began to draw and paint in Jamaica -- now I can draw them with my eyes closed, they've become so familiar to me. Those curvy, folded irregularly shaped leaves, and the clumps of bright green, firm grapes tucked in behind them.

The grapes do turn a plum-purple color as they ripen. The leaves will often change color, too, before they drop off -- it's weird, they will go through some of the same colors you see in a New England fall. Deep reds, oranges and gold.

They are a mysterious but beautiful tree.

Montego Bay was no place for a 5-year-old whose mother had no time fi she. The ghettos of Mobay were ruff enuff and one more unwanted little girl was bound to find a better life out in the rural yards of the parish of Westmoreland than the streets of the city.

Seen? Yeah, mon.

Poochie was about 8 or 9 at the time and used to strip down under the hot sun in the middle of the yard. She would bathe with a rag dipped into a plastic tub of water that had warmed up in the sunshine since morning.

She was not self-conscious, just very matter-of-fact about the task at hand and didn't mind my capturing her daily ablutions.

Poochie was cast out by her mudda an' fadda and sent to live with Miss Una out in the country.

Montego Bay was no place for a 5-year-old whose mother had no time fi she. The ghettos of Mobay were ruff enuff and one more unwanted little girl was bound to find a better life out in the rural yards of the parish of Westmoreland than the streets of the city.

Seen? Yeah, mon.

Poochie was about 8 or 9 at the time and used to strip down under the hot sun in the middle of the yard. She would bathe with a rag dipped into a plastic tub of water that had warmed up in the sunshine since morning.

She was not self-conscious, just very matter-of-fact about the task at hand and didn't mind my capturing her daily ablutions.

I've made many small ink sketches of all sorts of flowers and plants that surround me when I sit on the beach in Jamaica and this is a favorite.

I'm not a bake-in-the-sun type, I prefer the shade. So despite being just yards from the water's edge, I'm usually hunkered down under a palm or Sea Grape tree (see http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=26706697), with plenty of floral neighbors.

The crotons are mad crazy with color -- I love them.

Just when you think you don't look like a tourist, there will be a child staring at you, letting you know right away that you are a stranger in her world. This is a young girl I met on the "Dejard Viera", a hulking, 3-tiered wooden riverboat which took us down the Amazon River from Manaus to Belem.

She couldn't get enough of me and vice versa.

I traveled throughout the Amazon in Peru and Brazil many years ago and captured many of the people we met along the way on paper.

Translation: Stop talking and SIT DOWN, Chad.

He is full of beans, as are most little 7-year old boys. He is Shara's little brother -- likkle brudda. Last year's school report said that Chad was "very intelligent, with great potential for high achievement, but he must not miss so many days of school......" Chad is full of questions and answers and funny faces and uncanny observations.

But he cannot always afford lunch money.

Or books.

Or school fees.

Or a pair of shoes and a uniform.

So Chad misses too many days of his public school.

We'd stayed in the cottage bearing this name countless times over the past several summers at Whistling Bird did again that summer. This is the view of our verandah, as we turn down the path from the main gate. I never gave the cottage names much thought and was actually most happy not to have a complete understanding of the world around me.

The line between beach and tropical garden is blurred --- the hard-packed dirt gradually dissolves into powdery sand while the thick patches of croton plants, almond and mango trees yield to seagrapes and smatterings of palms.

And just steps away from the water's edge, the former trunk of a tree is no longer a knotty, gnarled stump. A local carver has shaped it into the form of two birds, each about a foot tall, gazing upon one another.

Whether or not they would actually do so in nature, who could say. But the sentiment is sweet. But wait -- it gets sweeter!

Can I get really corny here? You see, even when the tide is high and the hurricanes have washed the sea water over the heads of these birds, they've stood fast.
