I took this photograph with my digital camera at a place called The Baths in the British Virgin Islands, which is known for its snorkeling and its maze of private little rock-formation caves.

The Baths has a pretty sad history, but I couldn't help but notice how beautiful, private, and soulful the little caves were. I like to think that for the people who were brought there (and the people who visit as tourists) it was a little glimpse of peace, beauty and maybe even a little hope. Through the rocks, the sunrays shine in to light up the textural variations in the rock and dance on the glassy surface of the water.

I took this photograph in Spain, on the beach waiting for food at a beachside food stand. I am always fascinated by the space in between--words, buildings, objects, thoughts and emotions. At the time when I took this, the bit of blue sky with clouds was a nice resting place for my mind and heart.

Buratino di Legno, Pinocchio

Have you ever read the original story of Pinocchio, by Carlo Collodi? It's a fantastic book with some cool stick figure drawings--far more mature and clever than the Disney adaptation, and it includes all sorts of insights into Italian culture.

It humored me to think that someone, somewhere, is probably bored to pieces making Pinocchio statues for tourists that don't know the real Pinocchio. I love little Pinocchio, the mischievous little wooden boy who wants more than anything to be real. And meanwhile us real people forget what is important--our lives, our loves, our families, our dreams--who we ARE.

Costa Brava

I took this photograph while avoiding permanent sun damage on the costa brava. I got antsy on the beach and decided to take my camera on a walk. I like all the differently colored umbrellas, the large rock and the lone windswept tree, which mimics the multitude of umbrellas but provides shade for none but the rock.....

Early Spring

Those of us who live in cold climates can get pretty eager for Spring to come. Snowdrops, daffodils, bluebells and magnolias are signs of spring's arrival. Pink magnolias are so pretty, and I love the furry magnolia buds that burst open with colorful blossoms. The tree in the background is covered with white magnolia blossoms, which were a little further along because they were in a sunnier location....

No two hydrangea flowers are alike precisely because they are so beautifully colored. They are also surprisingly difficult to photograph in a unique way, largely because of how multi-faceted their petals and form are. This image looks super printed! It has so much detail and texture....

Nuns Saint Peter's

Outside the St. Peter's Basilica is a large courtyard with tall pillars, plenty of pigeons and an excellent array of people walking to and fro. I photographed these nuns swishing by, with huge pillars in the background, as a way of capturing what this area means to people--devotion, majesty and architectural grandeur--and combined them with a sense of playfulness. The ubiquitous space-sharing pigeon is a happy inclusion in squares like these throughout Europe and I couldn't help but include them, too. This imge was captured with 400 speed film.

Ranunculas are pretty singular due to the combination of simplicity and intricacy--their shape and their petals work on opposite ways to create interest. Their thin, vibrant petals have a sheen that is not common in the plant world. I thought a simple black background and unique framing of this lovely flower worked well with its nature and coloring....

There are many towns throughout Europe that were made for pedestrians rather than cars. In these towns you explore slowly, street by street, like a private little labyrinth, looking at things closely and noticing what has been added over the years. This photograph was taken in such a town, where I imagine the buildings, gardens and streets have changed very little over the years. That is the beauty of it.

Queen Anne's Lace

Queen Anne's Lace is such a delicate flower that it is hard to imagine how it came to dominate so many different landscapes. I have seen it all over the world. This is a flower just before it opens all of its petals, where you can see the spiky protective foliage that holds layer upon layer of small blossoms safely until the flower is ready to fully open.

Quiet Street of Barcelona

For those of you who have visited Barcelona, you know that there are areas of the city that are abuzz with activity. Likewise, just around the corner from the bustle, there are quiet streets with high building walls that seem completely isolated from the mess of tourists and performers and clubs. I was taking a walk, wandering these quiet streets, when I came across this man who, with a great deal of dignity, walked slowly along the streets of his city. I have no idea where he was going or where he was coming from, and in spite of his difficulty walking, he navigated the street with a certain degree of ease, as if from memory....I wondered how many times he had taken that walk. Had these same walls witness him age, day by day, over the years?

I have loved this photograph for years, ever since I took it. The moment I took this frame, I knew that I had captured what I wanted to about this flower. The selective focus, incredibly soft form, color variations and slightly aged petals make for a stunning image of a rose that any rose-lover (or anyone else, for that matter!) will recognize as special. Repetition in a Church

Old European churches have special sections for religious figures of importance, as well as for the choir. I no longer remember which of the two sat in these chairs at this church, but when I visited I couldn't resist the incredible detail that was repeated, seat after seat, along the perimiter of this area. The painstaking details of churches coupled with the investment and craftsmanship necessary to complete these grandiose buildings (and the details inside of them) are remarkable. What human beings are capable of creating! The devotion of the craftsmen is visible in each and every carving, laid tile or portion of guilded wood....what the human mind, heart and hands can create is beyond our imagination.

San Sebastian on a Cloudy Evening

San Sebastian is a Basque city in Spain and it's beautiful--awesome buildings, public parks and happy vacationers on the beaches and walkways. It looks an awful lot like Paris.

The evening that I took this photograph was my last one in Spain, and it was one of several stormy days, when the sky seemed to hold secrets and power that made my insides feel both calm and excited. The clocks mark the time and the bright lights on the pathway lead the way through the stormy evening. The clouds on this day were magical. You can also see my 'Bicicleta' photograph for these same clouds when some sunshine poked through....

Dahlias, as you may have noticed, are some of my favorite flowers to photograph. Each one is very different from the next. This Dahlia is growing outside the conservatory of flowers in San Francisco. It is super colorful and unique because of its happy spiky habit. This work was featured in a group exhibit in 2006.

State of Neglect

The countryside provides an abundance of photographic material. I enjoy imagining what life is like in the country and particularly enjoy examining old buildings that once were alive with use and care, but have fallen into a state of neglect and decay. This is one such barn in New Hampshire. The light streams in through holes in the roof, the entrance is blocked by strewn objects that are no longer used, and the entrance is framed by an old tree. Inside, enough is visible to keep me curious.

Barcelona Street Performers

The street performers in Barcelona provide super entertainment in the afternoons and evenings. The acts are lively and fun, often elaborately staged and more often than not the best performers have huge throngs of onlookers. This is just one of my photographs of the street performers. It is my favorite because of their old fashioned makeup, their simple musical instruments and their dramatic expressions, similar to those found in old silent movies.

Succulent

I adore succulents. They so often have interesting colors in their leaves, and carry scars from years past well into their future. They can grow old. This succulent was quite large, and old, and its long leaves curved gracefully, bending with their own weight. The leaves also had nice contrast between the spikes and the soft fleshy center. I chose to give this image a soft palladium toning. It was taken with 400 speed film.

Sunflowers aren't always happy, though they are always evocative and pretty. Sometimes their heavy heads droop a little, like a person deep in thought, or with a heavy heart. They always have a wonderful array of textures in their forms, including rough leaves, dense, dark seeds, and delicate, often slightly withered, petals. This sunflower is looking for the sun....

San Diego Sunset Version 2

During a visit to my sister and her family in San Diego, we went to the beach so that I could take some portraits of her and her family, and a friend's family. The hour before sunset, as most portrait photographers know, is called the golden hour. During that time, I was rushing to take as many great portraits as I could before this moment, sunset, overtook the golden hour with its deep hues, and brought with it the dark of night. It was a beautiful sunset (they usually are on the west coast, which is a big reason why I miss it so much!--that and the ocean!). The water ebbed and flowed glassily over the surface of the wet sand, reflecting the darkening sky and the last rays of golden sunshine..... My heart felt full and quiet, and I was happy to enjoy a few moments of just looking at the sky and water.

Swans, Heart

We live near the Chicago Botanic Garden and there is a pair of swans that live in the Garden. Every year we observe them, sometimes in more private sections of the park, where they seem to follow us a little, and we have grown to feel close to them and love them. This day, I tweaked my white balance a little so that I could photograph them with a blue tint, the way we saw them with our eyes in the shade as the sun fell on the horizon. They swam gracefully together beside the waterlily pods, tenderly touching one another every so often. Their necks make a little heart shape--and I do think that they feel love for one another--after all, they mate for life....

Have you ever smelled a tuberose flower? When I lived in Mexico City with my Dad, we would go to the nearby street vendor and buy bunches of Tuberose (Nardo) for close to nothing. They have an intoxicating sweet smell and their buds stay tightly closed and pink until the moment they open--like little firework flowers in white, with a great smell to boot. They are expensive in the United States, and hard to come by.... but beautiful, simple and sweet.
