The Baths

$35.00
I took this photograph with my digital camera at a place called The Baths in the British Virgin Islands, which is known for its snorkeling and its maze of private little rock-formation caves.

The Baths has a pretty sad history, but I couldn't help but notice how beautiful, private, and soulful the little caves were. I like to think that for the people who were brought there (and the people who visit as tourists) it was a little glimpse of peace, beauty and maybe even a little hope. Through the rocks, the sunrays shine in to light up the textural variations in the rock and dance on the glassy surface of the water.

This photograph is only available as an 8x10. I will print it for you on Kodak Endura paper (unless you'd like to upgrade to Durafiber paper--feel free to write me or look for more information about that on my shop welcome page!).

All photographs will be packaged so that they arrive to you undamaged.
I am always fascinated by the space in between--words, buildings, objects, thoughts and emotions. At the time when I took this, the bit of blue sky with clouds was a nice resting place for my mind and heart.

This image is available as an 8x10 only.
Buratino di Legno, Pinocchio

$35.00
Have you ever read the original story of Pinocchio, by Carlo Collodi? It's a fantastic book with some cool stick figure drawings--far more mature and clever than the Disney adaptation, and it includes all sorts of insights into Italian culture.

It humored me to think that someone, somewhere, is probably bored to pieces making Pinocchio statues for tourists that don't know the real Pinocchio. I love little Pinocchio, the mischievous little wooden boy who wants more than anything to be real. And meanwhile us real people forget what is important--our lives, our loves, our families, our dreams--who we ARE.

Dear little Pinocchio.

This photograph is available only as an 8x10. I will print your photograph on Kodak Endura paper (unless you'd like to upgrade to Durafiber paper--please feel free to contact me or check my shop's welcome page for more information!).

I will package your photograph so that it does not get damaged during shipping.
I got antsy on the beach and decided to take my camera on a walk. I like all the differently colored umbrellas, the large rock and the lone windswept tree, which mimics the multitude of umbrellas but provides shade for none but the rock.....

This image is only available as an 8x10. Snowdrops, daffodils, bluebells and magnolias are signs of spring's arrival. Pink magnolias are so pretty, and I love the furry magnolia buds that burst open with colorful blossoms. The tree in the background is covered with white magnolia blossoms, which were a little further along because they were in a sunnier location....

This image is only available as an 8x10. This photograph is of some whispy grass that caught my eye...something about its movement, its translucence and its fragility (though it is actually very hardy!) stirred me.

This image is only available as an 8x10. They are also surprisingly difficult to photograph in a unique way, largely because of how multi-faceted their petals and form are. This image looks super printed! It has so much detail and texture....

This photograph is also available as an 11x14. Please review the other variation before making your selection, as the composition of the images changes when cropped to constrained dimensions, though 8x10 and 11x14 are quite similar. I would recommend purchasing the larger one if it is in your budget (Please notice I don't make that recommendation frequently; I really mean it, but it is just a suggestion...). I will print your photograph for you on Kodak Endura paper (unless you'd like to upgrade to Durafiber paper--if so please contact me or read a little more on my shop's welcome page!).

I will package your photograph so that it does not get damaged during shipping.

I photographed these nuns swishing by, with huge pillars in the background, as a way of capturing what this area means to people--devotion, majesty and architectural grandeur--and combined them with a sense of playfulness. The ubiquitous space-sharing pigeon is a happy inclusion in squares like these throughout Europe and I couldn't help but include them, too. This imge was captured with 400 speed film.

This photograph is available as an 8x10, 8x12 or 11x14. Please review the other variations before purchasing your print. Their thin, vibrant petals have a sheen that is not common in the plant world. I thought a simple black background and unique framing of this lovely flower worked well with its nature and coloring....

This photograph is available as an 8x10 or an 11x14. In these towns you explore slowly, street by street, like a private little labyrinth, looking at things closely and noticing what has been added over the years. This photograph was taken in such a town, where I imagine the buildings, gardens and streets have changed very little over the years. I have seen it all over the world.
Quiet Street of Barcelona

Likewise, just around the corner from the bustle, there are quiet streets with high building walls that seem completely isolated from the mess of tourists and performers and clubs. I was taking a walk, wandering these quiet streets, when I came across this man who, with a great deal of dignity, walked slowly along the streets of his city. I have no idea where he was going or where he was coming from, and in spite of his difficulty walking, he navigated the street with a certain degree of ease, as if from memory....I wondered how many times he had taken that walk. Had these same walls witness him age, day by day, over the years?

This image is available as an 8x10, 8x12 and 11x14. Please look at the other variation of the image before making your selection, as variations in cropping due to constrained dimensions change the composition. The moment I took this frame, I knew that I had captured what I wanted to about this flower. The selective focus, incredibly soft form, color variations and slightly aged petals make for a stunning image of a rose that any rose-lover (or anyone else, for that matter!) will recognize as special. This photograph was featured in a group show in 2006.

This image is available as an 8x10, 8x12 and 11x14. I no longer remember which of the two sat in these chairs at this church, but when I visited I couldn't resist the incredible detail that was repeated, seat after seat, along the perimiter of this area. The painstaking details of churches coupled with the investment and craftsmanship necessary to complete these grandiose buildings (and the details inside of them) are remarkable. What human beings are capable of creating! The devotion of the craftsmen is visible in each and every carving, laid tile or portion of guilded wood....what the human mind, heart and hands can create is beyond our imagination.

This image is only available as an 8x10. It looks an awful lot like Paris.

The evening that I took this photograph was my last one in Spain, and it was one of several stormy days, when the sky seemed to hold secrets and power that made my insides feel both calm and excited. The clocks mark the time and the bright lights on the pathway lead the way through the stormy evening. The clouds on this day were magical. I enjoy imagining what life is like in the country and particularly enjoy examining old buildings that once were alive with use and care, but have fallen into a state of neglect and decay. This is one such barn in New Hampshire. The light streams in through holes in the roof, the entrance is blocked by strewn objects that are no longer used, and the entrance is framed by an old tree. Inside, enough is visible to keep me curious.

This photograph is available only as an 8x10. The acts are lively and fun, often elaborately staged and more often than not the best performers have huge throngs of onlookers. This is just one of my photographs of the street performers. It is my favorite because of their old fashioned makeup, their simple musical instruments and their dramatic expressions, similar to those found in old silent movies.

This photograph is also available as an 11x14. This succulent was quite large, and old, and its long leaves curved gracefully, bending with their own weight. The leaves also had nice contrast between the spikes and the soft fleshy center. I chose to give this image a soft palladium toning. It was taken with 400 speed film.

This photograph is also available as an 8x12 and 11x14. The hour before sunset, as most portrait photographers know, is called the golden hour. During that time, I was rushing to take as many great portraits as I could before this moment, sunset, overtook the golden hour with its deep hues, and brought with it the dark of night. It was a beautiful sunset (they usually are on the west coast, which is a big reason why I miss it so much!--that and the ocean!). The water ebbed and flowed glassily over the surface of the wet sand, reflecting the darkening sky and the last rays of golden sunshine..... My heart felt full and quiet, and I was happy to enjoy a few moments of just looking at the sky and water.

This photograph is only available as an 8x10. Every year we observe them, sometimes in more private sections of the park, where they seem to follow us a little, and we have grown to feel close to them and love them. This day, I tweaked my white balance a little so that I could photograph them with a blue tint, the way we saw them with our eyes in the shade as the sun fell on the horizon. They swam gracefully together beside the waterlily pods, tenderly touching one another every so often. Their necks make a little heart shape--and I do think that they feel love for one another--after all, they mate for life....

This image is only available as an 8x10. When I lived in Mexico City with my Dad, we would go to the nearby street vendor and buy bunches of Tuberose (Nardo) for close to nothing. They have an intoxicating sweet smell and their buds stay tightly closed and pink until the moment they open--like little firework flowers in white, with a great smell to boot. They are expensive in the United States, and hard to come by.... but beautiful, simple and sweet.

This image is only available as an 8x10. My cat Molly really likes flowers (and especially likes to eat their petals!) and usually has her nose in them, but on this occasion was occupied by something outside the window. After over ten years, there was only one room that looked and felt as it had when I attended school there. My favorite of all of the buildings on campus was Pearson Hall, where Latin, Greek and Italian classes were held. I learned Italian from Dr. Pascucci, a slight, sweet old man who always donned a bow tie and sweater vest, played bocce ball and hummed opera. He alwasy wore a small gray scarf to class because he opened the windows in the winter to keep us awake, and when we did happen to doze off he would throw chalk at our heads. I learned so much about Italian, and about life, from Dr. Pascucci and I really loved him. He has since passed, but I was comforted to see, when I visited Pearson Hall, that the room behind our classroom looked and felt like he was still there and hadn't changed a bit. All his old books, his old typewriter and maps.... Just the way it was when he taught there (and I think he taught there for 50 or so years!), and probably just the way it always was, as long as he was there.....

This image is also available as an 8x10 and 11x14. In front of their apartment building they share a nice little garden with their neighbors, where roses, hydrangeas and grass grow. There have been only a few occasions when we have eaten in the courtyard, because it is so very windy, but this table was the preparation for one such meal. I love the windy tablecloth and the simple vase of hydrangeas. The snow was pretty fluffy, and had yet to melt from the branches of the trees and shrubs that are home to birds, squirrels and chipmunks. It is a beautiful and peaceful scene (albeit a little icy and dangerous for me and my camera!). The best part of winter is the snow.

This image is also available as an 11x14. It makes an impression. In this case, these chairs were outside a restaurant in the Italian Riviera. The curly details, reflection, perfectly woven seats and creamy white marble tables create a stunning black and white image. All they are missing are people chatting, eating, smoking, but the photograph is better without them, so that you can imagine all different kinds of people in the seats, or even better, appreciate the intricate simplicity of the black and white composition.

This image is also available as an 11x14. His style is sculptural, organic, detailed and thoughtful. It is amazing to walk through the hallways, the rooms, the stairways--even his chimneys are arftully crafted and interesting. Sometimes a little psychadellic, I prefered his quieter designs. At every vantage point, there was something new for me to appreciate. His work is, quite honestly, some of the most beautiful sculpture I have ever seen--and it was breathtaking to be able to experience it.

This photograph is of rooftop chimneys he designed with great detail, not only to look beautiful, like guardian knights, but also to function in an innovative way. I love their beautiful 'faces'--the organic shapes, the movement of the lines, the flesh-tone coloring....quite special.

This photograph is available only as an 8x12 because to crop it does a disservice to the composition of the image. I wish that music, or even just a voice, were actually playing from this gramophone when I took its picture. For me, the gramophone has generally been a thing of imagination. It was the beginning of the musical freedom and access for all, starting with the recorded voice and eventually evolving into the more-modern day record player. And yet, as a work of art or sculpture, even without all of the wonderful sounds it can project, it is beautiful.

This image is available only as an 8x12. The babies are adorable, furry, awkward and surprisingly curious, and their mothers, though tired, are tireless in their care for their babies, and are always at their side should their little one need anything. The coloring in this photograph is particularly pretty because of the quality of light.

This image is only available as an 8x12 because cropping it to any of the other sizes available here does it a disservice.

We chose carefully and from the 100s of plants available, we chose this one, for its special spotted patern and lovely coloring. The evening we purchased it the light in our living room was very pretty and I took the opportunity to photograph my new plant. We were only able to enjoy this plant and its flowers for a short period of time, finding out shortly after purchasing it that it was in very poor condition and had only one root sustaining its entire flower system. The oddity of plants like orchids and wisteria--they flower prettiest when they think they are dying. Unfortunately for us, we weren't able to save this plant--it was too far gone by the time we got it, but thankfully I have this photograph to remember it by.

This photograph is only available as an 8x12 because of the composition of the image.

This image is also available as an 8x10 and 11x14. Please look at the other variation of the image before making your selection, as variations in cropping due to constrained dimensions change the composition.
$35.00
Let me start by saying, that although I understand the course of nature, the inevitability of death and the idea of sympathetically killing animals that are sick or injured, I don't generally like skulls and the like...usually they just give me the heebie jeebies. But not this one. This one was beautiful. The light of the late afternoon made it look other-worldly, simple, shapely and soft, as if this were what were intended--a piece of art that comes from the beauty of a life that has run its course but continues to be present, and part of the world. By being there for me to take its picture, does not this animal live on, in a certain sense? I have loved this photograph's assymetry, lighting, shading, and overall feel since I took it years ago. I hope you like it too, and see not sadness, but beauty in its form.

This image is available only as an 8x12. Their thin, vibrant petals have a sheen that is not common in the plant world. I thought a simple black background suited these multi-colored ranuncula flowers when they were arranged in a way that fills the frame with movement and interest, due to placement and variation of focal planes.

This photograph is only available as an 8x12.

Please look at the other variations of the image before making your selection, as variations in cropping due to constrained dimensions change the composition. This image is remarkable in larger formats. I would be happy, if you are interested, to send you the pricing information for images larger than 11x14. For those of you looking at the different sizes, please consider purchasing this image as an 11x14. It is beautiful.
$35.00
As a child, when I was bored and out to dinner, I went to the bathroom to waste time. My grandmother was not too happy about it and would comment (only half joking) that I would be a bathroom attendant when I got older. I have always loved looking at these private places, whether public or in a home, a hotel room, a hostel. Each bathroom is different, and so often they have nice soft window light, delicate curtains, frosty glass, shapely porcelain toilets and sinks, and even, in hotels, uniformly fanned out washcloths and specially wrapped soap--all of these features are a little fascinating to me. Then, in high school, after taking a few pictures of bathrooms that I found interesting, but being shy about showing them to others, I was looking through Edward Weston's photographic work and I found I was not alone. His hotograph 'Excusado' of a toilet in his apartment in Mexico, is so very beautiful. After seeing that he, too, took photographs of toilets, bathrooms and the like, I felt it was okay to continue with my studies of bathrooms.

This one, an old fashioned toilet in one of the houses designed by the Spanish (Catalan, actually) architect Gaudi, is particularly beautiful. The variations in color, the soft natural light, the overall shape and shininess are lovely. I have a framed version in my house (where else but in the bathroom!).

This image is available as an 8x12 and 11x14. Please look at the other variation of the image before making your selection, as variations in cropping due to constrained dimensions change the composition.
St Peter's Rooftop

$35.00
The St Peter's Catedral in Rome is an absolute architectural feat. Not only is it huge, intricate, and impressive, but it also has beautifully thought through lighting and can hold a great number of people. It was a marvel at the time it was made and there are books written about the process and the architectural hurdles and discoveries inherent in its construction. As with most churches in Europe, you can choose, for a small fee, to climb the many stairs in a dark and narrow stairwell to see the city from the rooftop. Unlike most of the visitors, though, I was busy looking at the domed rooftops of the building rather than the city skyline. If is at close range that the vast nature of the architectural structure is appreciable. At the time, the grandeur and massiveness were symbols of man's devotion to God. I see it more as a symbol of the growth of mankind's ambition, skill and boldness to create such a large structure. From mud and adobe huts to massive and intricate buildings.... I found the vantage point that created an interesting composition, with the right amount of movement, curve, returns and contrast. It is an active, yet muted, image and I have loved it for over 10 years. It was taken with 400 speed film.

This image is only available as an 8x12 because of the composition; cropping it truncates many of the elements that make the composition feel complete. I will print your photograph on Kodak Endura paper (unless you'd prefer to upgrade to Durafiber paper--if so, please feel free to contact me or check my shop's welcome page for more information!).

I will package your photograph so that it does not get damaged during shipping.

They so often have interesting colors in their leaves, and carry scars from years past well into their future. They can grow old. This succulent was quite large, and old, and its long leaves curved gracefully, bending with their own weight. The leaves also had nice contrast between the spikes and the soft fleshy center. I chose to give this image a soft palladium toning. It was taken with 400 speed film.

This photograph is also available as an 8x10 and 11x14.
$35.00
Generally, I find Sunflowers to be pretty happy flowers and I think most people share that sentiment. They are especially astounding in mass plantings, like in the fields of Tuscany, where they grow tall and abundant, like a dream. In spanish and Italian, the name is more specific than the name in English. While the word sunflower suits the image of the flower, the circumstances for its growth, its happiest growing conditions and its overall appearance, it misses something important, one of my favorite details about the enchanting flower. Girasol, or girasole, in Italian, better captures the essence of the flower. "Turn-sun" would be the exact translation, though it really means 'turn toward the sun' or 'turn to the sun'. Nature, like ancient civilizations (and ours, though we have computers and lightbulbs to distract us from this truth) were based on the sun, the seasons, the cycles of agrarian life and the phases of the moon, which is illuminated by the reflection of the sun. Girasols turn their faces and limbs to take best advantage of the sun, to soak up its rays, to watch it rise and set and in so doing, praise and appreciate it daily, embodying a natural awareness and sense of enjoyment. As simple, and yet as complicated, as turning to the sun. What magic and beauty. And on days when I cannot see the sun, either due to clouds or snow or my stubborn mind, this setting sunflower substitutes for that which it adores.

I will print your photograph on Kodak Endura paper, unless you'd prefer to upgrade to Durafiber paper (if so, please feel free to contact me and check the welcome page of my etsy shop for more information).

I will package your photograph so that it does not get damaged during shipping.

Sometimes their heavy heads droop a little, like a person deep in thought, or with a heavy heart. They always have a wonderful array of textures in their forms, including rough leaves, dense, dark seeds, and delicate, often slightly withered, petals. However, water lilies are interesting for several reasons, not the least of which are the thin, but durable, rounded leaves, the pods, the multifaceted petals of the blossoms, their aquatic nature and the great variety of shapes, colors, and variety of plants within the water lily family. Lotus flowers and Water lilies have a ripe literary and spiritual history, throughout the East especially, and they symbolize purity and spiritual promise. The lotus was immortalized by Homer, in the Odyssey, wherein Ulysses and his crew shored on Africa amongst lotus eaters and forgot about their much longed for homes, staying on in Africa to eat lotus flowers, without a care in the world....

This image was taken with 400 speed film, and I added a slight palladium toning to warm up the tones of the image.

This image is also available as an 8x12 and 11x14. Please review the other variations before making your selection, as cropping to constrained dimensions changes the composition of an image. I will print your photograph on Kodak Endura paper (unless you'd prefer to upgrade to Durafiber--if so, please feel free to contact me or check the welcome page of my shop for more information!).

I will package your photograph so that it does not get damaged during shipping.
I am especially fond of the very curious (and sometimes mischievous) baby horses. The babies allow me to take so many fun pictures of them! For this photograph, the babies were nuzzling under their mother's watchful eye. She was a good mama, protecting her baby and participating in the moment that her baby shared with another horse and me... How lucky I felt to be a part of it!

This image is also available as an 8x10. I'm sure he wasn't aware that as people walked by they observed him as if he were another statue, just like the marble one featured in the background. I love this photograph not only because it is downright funny, but also because it is beautiful when presented with a nice mat and frame in my (or your) house....

Taken with Ilford 400 speed film, scanned, and printed on Kodak Endura paper (or you can upgrade to Durafiber if you like--feel free to contact me or read more about that in my shop welcome note!).

This photograph is also available as an 8x10.

All photographs are shipped to arrive to you undamaged.

San Sebastian had special paths for bicycles because of all the pedestrians and at this point in time, it looked to me like the sign was guiding bicycles to ride in the stormy sky, and I wish I could have followed the directive, just so that I could observe nature's magic over the lovely city.

This image is also available as an 8x10.

This image is also available as an 8x12. Park benches are kind of similar--in one moment they belong to you and the moment you are living, stretched out on the slats of the bench, and the next moment they belong to someone else.

This photograph is also available as an 8x10.

This photograph is also available as an 8x10 and 8x12.
Where I Learned Still Life 1

$45.00
Last year I visited my old high school.

This image is also available as an 8x10 and 8x12. The snow was pretty fluffy, and had yet to melt from the branches of the trees and shrubs that are home to birds, squirrels and chipmunks. It is a beautiful and peaceful scene (albeit a little icy and dangerous for me and my camera!). The best part of winter is the snow.

This image is also available as an 8x10. Each petal is so soft and expressive--at once heavy and feather light--with the sweetest scents. Peonies are easy to love. Our local botanic garden has quite a variety of peonies, and this one caught my eye because of the way the afternoon light illuminated its wavy petals, as if it were stretching to warm itself in the springtime sun...And while this one was a beautiful color, the soft palladium toning brings out the details that make this flower unique.

This image is available as an 8x10 or 11x14.

This photograph is also available as an 11 by 14.

This image is also available as an 11x14.
