There is a type of seaweed called Sargassum (my seaweed paintings are usually given latin names), but I couldn't resist titling this painting Sargasso instead because it is one of my favorite words. There is no book title better (in my opinion) than Wide Sargasso Sea. And Sargassum is named for the Sargasso Sea.

This is an original acrylic painting which measures 8"x10"(20x25cm).

I painted Sargasso with artist grade acrylic on a 3/4" (2cm) deep cradled wooden panel and sealed it with a protective coat of UVLS* varnish. The sides of the panel are painted pale green-gold. Ready to hang. Signed and dated on the back by yours truly - Karina Kalvaitis.

A gentle white fawn looks shyly over her shoulder at a pale blue lily.

As I was completing this painting I found that I had a package of white fawn lily seeds sitting on a shelf in my kitchen waiting to be planted. The name on the seed packet must have seeped into my unconscious. White fawns are a rarity, but they do exist.

With its muted colors, this is a very serene and delicate painting which I think would work well in a bedroom.

I've painted this image with artist quality acrylic paint on a 20"x24"(50x61cm) wooden panel that is 3/4" deep (50x61x2cm).

I've sealed it with a protective coat of UVLS* varnish. It is ready to hang.

Submarine

Like any good submarine, this sculpture lets you stay dry while exploring enigmatic underwater worlds. This one-of-a-kind piece has felted marine plants, fronds of organza, nests for mysterious creatures to snuggle into, and rafts for them to bob on a feathery sea.

The upright nests are supported by brass poles and the bobbles on top are hand carved bass wood, painted with oils and colored with metallic pigments. Each has a bed of green wool inside. The felted components of this sculpture are hand-dyed wool felted around custom-made forms. The green fronds are hand-dyed organza (some with flocked dots) attached to a wire form. The rafts are made of hand-carved MDF (a wood product), acrylic paints, and pink flocking. The feathery sea is made of feathers! All painted surfaces are sealed with varnish.

Size: 8"x8"x10" (20x20x25cm). Nests on top of uprights are approximately 2"x3" (5x8cm) each.

This sculpture is shipped with the upright nests removed from the base.

Gorgeous and enigmatic, this is currently one of my favorite sculptures. It was inspired by a lovely little bird’s nest that I found on a walk. A tiny and much-used wooden stair case leads to this home-inside-a-home. A wooden platform with arbutus branch legs hold the nest up, while a roof protects it from the elements. Rain falls in the form of blue silk ribbons.

I have long been fascinated by birds. Once, when I was in art school I had all of the people in my sculpture class over to my house. Before they got there, I moved the bed out of my room and built a giant human-sized bird's nest where my bed had been. Those were the days...

Lucky Rabbits - Journal / Notebook

A lovely little journal or notebook that is small and lightweight enough to go anywhere!

This handmade booklet has two lucky rabbits printed on the front in black. I've made the book with a textured concord grape card stock cover and matching purple pages inside.

All paper for these booklets is hand cut and hand bound with strong, flexible acid free adhesive which is also totally non-toxic. The type of binding used in this book allows it to open flat - a real plus.

I made the original lucky rabbit image with a block print and then scanned it so I could digitally print it onto the books. It's a crisp retro - modern style.

Contains 50 sheets (100 pages) of 24 lb blank purple paper. This book measures 4 3/8"x 5 1/2" (11cm x 14cm) and is a bit more than 1/4" (7mm) thick.

The cover is made from acid free card stock which is lightly textured.

Inspired by Canadian winters and that cozy feeling that comes from colder weather. This little habitat is made of wood, felt, fun fur and metal beads.
8 little hand-felted domes make up the settlement in this winter world. Fun fact: I scoured the beach here in Victoria to find rocks that were just the right shapes to use as felting forms to make the domes. Six of the domes have little viewing portals. And through 4 of the portals you can see the beaded icicles hanging inside. Outside, two fun-fur plants grow on the fun-fur tundra.

Inspired by Canadian winters and souvenir snow domes with swirling sparkles. This miniature world manages to invoke the spirit of deep winter and make you feel warm and cozy all at once. It makes an excellent mental refuge. Peek inside the central dome to see a collection of fuzzy, sparkling snow balls. This is a very engaging and tactile sculpture that always gets people talking. Hand crafted, mixed-media, and one-of-a-kind!

The domes are hand-felted wool with a collection of sparkle-covered pompoms inside. Outside in the fun fur snow are 5 hand-carved soapstone (miniature) boulders.

Thicket

Thicket is inspired by green things growing in secret spots and the spirit of the midway. If something magical is going to happen, you know it has to happen here. Little green hidey holes nestle in the grass and pink polka dot flags atop striped flag-poles mark the spot. A mental wander in this spring-time Thicket is always refreshing.

The hidey holes are hand felted – green on the outside and pinks and purples on the inside. The wool, fun fur and organza flags have been hand-dyed by yours truly. The grassy area around the wooden flag poles was created with clear silicone and mica pigments.

I took this photo of mysterious fuzzy felt holes and verdant green moss on a foggy day in an overgrown abandoned garden here in Victoria. Many years ago the site had been a large and posh estate. The stone walls and wrought iron gates are still there but everything has grown wild. The hedges that once lined the drive up to the estate are now huge overgrown trees. I took this photo on a rocky outcropping that is at the highest point of the grounds - a place from which you can see the ocean through the gnarled old oak trees on clear days.

I was giddy as I took this photo - knowing that the mystery and timelessness of the place was evident in the image.

I have an unusual drawing style which utilizes sharpened mechanical pencils (yes, it is possible!) and lots of deliberate erasing with my collection of specialty erasers. My technique creates a very fine shadowy line with lots of subtlety and gradation. I've been very careful to make sure the character of my original drawing comes across in the prints - including the duplication of the graphite color.

This foxy little book makes a great notebook or journal. The lipstick pink cover contrasts snappily with the blue pages inside. I've printed a smart fox on the front cover in black. How clever would you feel pulling this out of your purse?

I created the fox image first as a block print and then digitally printed it onto the book. It gives a nice clean look with a retro - modern feel.

I hand cut and hand bind the paper in these books with strong, flexible, acid free adhesive which is also totally non-toxic. The type of binding used in this book allows it to open flat - a real plus.

Contains 50 sheets (100 pages) of 24 lb blank blue paper.

Cover is heavy weight acid free cardstock.

This book measures 4 3/8"x 5 1/2" (11cm x 14cm) and is a bit more than 1/4" (7mm) thick.
