This is something I labored over, but I tried to keep it from being too over-thought. I often end up ruining my pieces by over-thinking and over-editing, without giving myself and the painting time to sit and relax.

Bigger Than The Sound

This was done back in 2005, and was among the first three paintings I'd ever done. It's had several working titles, and none of them really seem to fit; the title here may change, but the piece will stay the same. The current title as displayed here is taken from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' song "Cheated Hearts." The colors, energy, and internal movement remind me of the song.

The main photograph is, I believe, a little brighter than the painting itself. I've uploaded additional (untouched) photographs which I think are a bit closer to the actual piece, but the current one, I think, represents the piece very well. It looks somewhat different in person, and it's hard for me to take a good photo of it.

The reverse side has a typed excerpt from Alexander Pope's "Eloisa to Abelard," as I was going through a fascination with "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" at the time.

Rather than drawing with anything specific in mind (other than the titular line which happened to stick to me one night), this piece--like the majority of mine--is more emotive and expressive in its nature; a visual cataloging of otherwise-cluttered and conflicting thoughts and feelings.

Media: black ink, pen, and Prismacolor colored pencil

Throughout the fire and phoenix-themed drawing are scrawled the words "I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. I lift my lids and all is born again."-- all of which is taken from Plath's poem.

This was originally a transformation project; meant literally to show one thing transforming into another. I took it more figuratively and used the imagery of fire to symbolize cleansing and rebirth, and had a man burning and dying and transforming into a Phoenix of sorts.

The title itself comes from the line "I should have loved a thunderbird instead; At least when spring comes they roar back again."
