The pupae's diet of cashew leaves is what gives the cocoon its natural gold tones.

Use these cocoons as embellishments for handspun art yarn, jewelry and a variety of other crafts. They may also be degummed and spun by gently pulling and twisting with your fingers.

Check out this video to see how one village in Indonesia harvests these cocoons to help support its local farmers during drought season: http://www.vimeo.com/1495467

They were hand dyed using professional acid dyes in my smoke-free studio. These cocoons positively "glow".

These cocoons are intact. If you'd like me to snip off an end and 'de-worm' them for you, let me know in the "Messages to Seller". I personally like to keep them intact as they make a cute little rattling sound when you shake 'em!

If you'd like more info on silk and silkworms, there's a great article from Knitty found at http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATbombyx.html
After a recent custom batt order that contained merino and a large amount of milk fiber carded together, I realized that I LOVE how hand painted milk fiber looks when carded. The color variations that would normally create a very distinct barber-pole when spinning become softer and less defined. For me, it also seems easier to spin than milk fiber in roving/top form. I have to say, this is definitely my new favorite way to spin up milk latte fiber!

COLORS: magenta, pink

Weight: 2.0 oz.

Milk protein fiber is an eco-friendly fiber which has antimicrobial properties (perfect for socks and undergarments), nourishes and lubricates the skin, and is an excellent choice if you have sensitive skin (it has the same pH as human skin). This is a great choice for those with wool allergies too!
They still contain the natural sericin from the silk caterpillar and as a result are stiff (they can be degummed in the same manner as silk cocoons if you wish to soften them for spinning or another application). They were hand dyed using professional acid dyes in my smoke-free studio and have a beautiful sheen to them.

Silk carrier are formed when the cocoons are unwound over metal rods on their way to form silk thread on a reel. The silk tends to build up on the rod and must be periodically slit with a knife and detached from the machine.

These rods can be used for a wide variety of projects such as spinning, felting, hand and machine embellishments, jewelry making and scrapbooking.

I like to use them as embellishments in my art yarn. :)

Color: purple
