Tiger Lily I, Original Painting (8x10)

$32.00
This brush painting was inspired by the fiery beauty of summer tiger lilies in bloom. It uses watercolor paints on rice paper in the traditional Chinese style and is signed with my Chinese name and name chop (a signature stamp).

Please note that this is an unframed painting. The virtual frame in the last photo is shown to give an idea of how it will look once hung.

Dimensions:
-- 8.25" (21 cm) wide
-- 10.25" (26 cm) high
-- mounted on backing paper wider by ~0.75" (2 cm) per side
-- ready for framing

NY Buyers: For items purchased in New York, a sales tax of 8.875% will be automatically applied upon checkout via PayPal. If the sales tax rate for the buyer's location is lower than 8.875%, I will refund the difference. Thank you for understanding!
___________________________________________________________

THE PROCESS

Each Chinese brush painting begins with a blank sheet of thin rice paper and a stick of charcoal. With an image of the painting in mind, faint charcoal marks are applied for placement of the image; these are later rubbed out.

The color palette consists only of black ink, white powder paint, and simple watercolors (red, yellow, blue, and a few unique colors such as red-brown and purple-pink). By mixing these in different combinations and at different concentrations with water, the spectrum of colors used in each painting is created.

The choice of which brush is also very important. Obviously a larger brush will give a thicker line, and a smaller brush a thinner line. But also, the stiffness or softness of the horsehairs in each brush must be considered. I typically use a soft brush for large swaths of color, and a stiff brush for things such as stems or branches.

Upon completing the painting, it is backed by a thicker and stronger paper, as rice paper is very thin and delicate. This is done by using a thin adhesive, and it also flattens the painting out, since rice paper tends to crinkle during the painting process. At this point, the Chinese brush painting is finished and ready for framing!

Mountain Scene, Original Large Painting (17x34)

$299.00
Clambering up the Cold Mountain path,
The Cold Mountain trail goes on and on:
The long gorge choked with scree and boulders,
The wide creek, the mist-blurred grass.
The moss is slippery, though there's been no rain
The pine sings, but there's no wind.
Who can leap the world's ties
And sit with me among the white clouds?

Poetry by Han-Shan (Cold Mountain)
------------------------------------------------------------

This is one of my favorite paintings, with its sense of peacefulness and majestic beauty.

Within Chinese brush painting, traditional landscapes utilize a unique technique of painting, with special brushes and a specific type of rice paper. This style of painting, literally translated into "mountain water painting", requires patience, since layer upon layer of fine ink strokes and subdued colors are applied to create it.

The painting is lined with a traditional light green border and is ready for hanging. It is signed with my Chinese name in the lower right corner.

Please note that this is an unframed painting. The virtual frame in the second photo is shown to give an idea of how it will look once hung.

As with all my paintings, this will be shipped flat, sandwiched between 2 panes of cardboard for protection. However, as it as too large for a cello sleeve, an alternate plastic coverage will be used to protect from moisture.

Dimensions:
<Not Including Border>
-- 12.5" (31.5 cm) wide
-- 28.25" (72 cm) high
<Including Border>
-- 17" (43.5 cm) wide
-- 34.25" (87 cm) high

Koi Fish, Original Large Framed Painting (28x38)

In fact, a Japanese homophone of "koi" literally translates to love and affection. Since the koi fish is such a great (and beautiful) symbol, it can be found quite frequently in Asian art!

In this painting, I tried to capture the beauty and serenity of the koi fish and everything it represents. I used sweeping brushstrokes and layer upon layer of vivid colors to bring the painting to life. It is signed with my Chinese name and name chop (a signature stamp), and is custom matted and framed in a simple, elegant dark wood that nicely complements the painting.

Dimensions:
-- 28" (71 cm) wide
-- 38" (97 cm) tall

NY Buyers: For items purchased in New York, a sales tax of 8.875% will be automatically applied upon checkout via PayPal.
Maroon Knot Keychain

$5.50
This keychain was made with maroon Chinese satin cord, and attached to a silver key ring. The entire knot is made with one continuous string, which can make it pretty complicated! To create the intricate knot, I used the help of a corkboard and pushpins to hold different sections of the knot, as one tiny misplacement would mean starting over completely from scratch.

The ends of the string were fused by holding them close to a candle flame, and then quickly pressing them together. Chinese knotting string has the unique property of being melt-able, like wax, and then quickly hardening, which makes finishing these pieces easy. Just make sure not to hold the finished piece near high heat, as it will definitely melt!

Dimensions:
-- 1.25" (3.2 cm) ring diameter
-- 1.75" (4.5 cm) across knot
-- 3.25" (8 cm) in length, not including key ring

Historically, Chinese knots were used as good-luck charms, either to ward off evil spirits or in happy occasions such as weddings. Today, these intricate knots are often enjoyed for their decorative and cultural appeal.

NY Buyers: For items purchased in New York, a sales tax of 8.875% will be automatically applied upon checkout via PayPal.
Red Knot Keychain

$6.50
This keychain was made with thin red Chinese cord, and attached to a silver key ring.

Dimensions:
-- 1.8" (2 cm) ring diameter
-- 1.5" (3.7 cm) across knot
-- 2.75" (7 cm) in length, not including key ring

Historically, Chinese knots were used as good-luck charms, either to ward off evil spirits or in happy occasions such as weddings. Today, these intricate knots are often enjoyed for their decorative and cultural appeal.

NY Buyers: For items purchased in New York, a sales tax of 8.875% will be automatically applied upon checkout via PayPal.
Autumn Landscape, Original Large Painting (14x27)

$229.00
A few homes nestle in the autumn hills. A trail of smoke drifts up from a chimney, and rusty red/brown mountains, colored by the season, lie in the distance.

Within Chinese brush painting, traditional landscapes utilize a unique technique of painting, with special brushes and a specific type of rice paper. This style of painting, literally translated into "mountain water painting", requires patience, since layer upon layer of fine ink strokes and subdued colors are applied to create it.

Please note that this is an unframed painting. The virtual frame in the second photo is shown to give an idea of how it will look once hung.

Dimensions:
-- 27" (68.5. cm) wide
-- 14.3" (36.5 cm) high
-- mounted on backing paper wider by ~0.75" (<2 cm) per side
-- ready for framing

NY Buyers: For items purchased in New York, a sales tax of 8.875% will be automatically applied upon checkout via PayPal. If the sales tax rate for the buyer's location is lower than 8.875%, I will refund the difference. Thank you for understanding!___________________________________________________________

Feels a bit tropical, doesn't it? The knot was first created using traditional Chinese knotting techniques. The cord ends were then seared with a flame to prevent fraying and carefully sewn together. The knot is sewn securely to a standard, black bobby pin.

The paper clip is shown for relative size. It is a standard, small-size clip.

Dimensions:
-- 1" (2.5 cm) diameter across knot
-- 2.5" (6.5 cm) total length

Historically, Chinese knots were used as good-luck charms, either to ward off evil spirits or in happy occasions such as weddings. Today, these intricate knots are often enjoyed for their decorative and cultural appeal.

NY Buyers: For items purchased in New York, a sales tax of 8.875% will be automatically applied upon checkout via PayPal.
Burgundy Square Knot Necklace - 19 in (49 cm)

To create the intricate square knot pendant, I used the help of a corkboard and pushpins to hold different sections of the knot, as one tiny misplacement would mean starting over completely from scratch.

The necklace fastens at the back with a silver-plated hook-and-eye clasp.

Dimensions:
-- 19" (49 cm) in necklace length (not including knot pendant)
-- 1.75" (4.4 cm) across square knot, corner to corner

Historically, Chinese knots were used as good-luck charms, either to ward off evil spirits or in happy occasions such as weddings. The knot was first created using traditional Chinese knotting techniques. The cord ends were then seared with a flame to prevent fraying and carefully sewn together.
Tree Landscape, Original Painting (14x18)

$89.00
In this Chinese brush painting, I layered a variety of trees as the focus - tall and short, with dark and light leaves created with different brush techniques. There are majestic mountains behind and above, and then blue mountains fading in the distance.

This type of traditional landscape utilizes a unique technique within Chinese brush painting, with special brushes and a specific type of rice paper. This style of painting, literally translated into "mountain water painting", requires patience, since layer upon layer of fine ink strokes and subdued colors are applied to create it.

The painting is signed with my Chinese name and name chop, a signature stamp, in the lower right hand corner.

Please note that this is an unframed painting. The virtual frame in the second photo is shown to give an idea of how it will look once hung.

Dimensions:
-- 18" (46 cm) wide
-- 14" (35.5 cm) high
-- mounted on backing paper wider by ~0.75" (<2 cm) per side
-- ready for framing

NY Buyers: For items purchased in New York, a sales tax of 8.875% will be automatically applied upon checkout via PayPal. If the sales tax rate for the buyer's location is lower than 8.875%, I will refund the difference. Thank you for understanding!___________________________________________________________

Spring Kitten, Original Painting (14x18)

The kitten knows that dinner is waiting inside, but for now, the little one is content to simply sit and enjoy the warmth of an early spring.

There is some creasing of the rice paper in the lower left corner near my Chinese signature (as seen in the 4th photo). This is not obvious in the finished painting, but to account for the slight imperfection, the painting has been listed at a discounted price.

Please note that this is an unframed painting.
Pumpkin, Original Painting (8x10)

$24.00
This small-sized painting shows a ripe, vibrant pumpkin ready to be harvested off the vine, just in time for autumn. Perhaps it will be displayed on someone's porch for Halloween. Maybe it's destined to become pumpkin pie (my favorite!). In any case, right now, it's just waiting to be taken home.

The painting was created with watercolors on rice paper in the traditional Chinese style and is signed with my Chinese name and name chop (a signature stamp).
