This brush painting was inspired by the fiery beauty of summer tiger lilies in bloom. It uses watercolor paints on rice paper in the traditional Chinese style and is signed with my Chinese name and name chop (a signature stamp).

THE PROCESS

Each Chinese brush painting begins with a blank sheet of thin rice paper and a stick of charcoal. With an image of the painting in mind, faint charcoal marks are applied for placement of the image; these are later rubbed out.

The color palette consists only of black ink, white powder paint, and simple watercolors (red, yellow, blue, and a few unique colors such as red-brown and purple-pink). By mixing these in different combinations and at different concentrations with water, the spectrum of colors used in each painting is created.

The choice of which brush is also very important. Obviously a larger brush will give a thicker line, and a smaller brush a thinner line. But also, the stiffness or softness of the horsehairs in each brush must be considered. I typically use a soft brush for large swaths of color, and a stiff brush for things such as stems or branches.

Upon completing the painting, it is backed by a thicker and stronger paper, as rice paper is very thin and delicate. This is done by using a thin adhesive, and it also flattens the painting out, since rice paper tends to crinkle during the painting process. At this point, the Chinese brush painting is finished and ready for framing!

This is one of my favorite paintings, with its sense of peacefulness and majestic beauty.

Within Chinese brush painting, traditional landscapes utilize a unique technique of painting, with special brushes and a specific type of rice paper. This style of painting, literally translated into "mountain water painting", requires patience, since layer upon layer of fine ink strokes and subdued colors are applied to create it.

The painting is lined with a traditional light green border and is ready for hanging. It is signed with my Chinese name in the lower right corner.

Please note that this is an unframed painting. The virtual frame in the second photo is shown to give an idea of how it will look once hung.

As with all my paintings, this will be shipped flat, sandwiched between 2 panes of cardboard for protection. However, as it as too large for a cello sleeve, an alternate plastic coverage will be used to protect from moisture.

As a traditional Asian symbol, the koi fish symbolizes love and friendship. In fact, a Japanese homophone of "koi" literally translates to love and affection. Since the koi fish is such a great (and beautiful) symbol, it can be found quite frequently in Asian art!

In this painting, I tried to capture the beauty and serenity of the koi fish and everything it represents. I used sweeping brushstrokes and layer upon layer of vivid colors to bring the painting to life. It is signed with my Chinese name and name chop (a signature stamp), and is custom matted and framed in a simple, elegant dark wood that nicely complements the painting.

Maroon Knot Keychain

This keychain was made with maroon Chinese satin cord, and attached to a silver key ring. The entire knot is made with one continuous string, which can make it pretty complicated! To create the intricate knot, I used the help of a corkboard and pushpins to hold different sections of the knot, as one tiny misplacement would mean starting over completely from scratch.

The ends of the string were fused by holding them close to a candle flame, and then quickly pressing them together. Chinese knotting string has the unique property of being melt-able, like wax, and then quickly hardening, which makes finishing these pieces easy. Just make sure not to hold the finished piece near high heat, as it will definitely melt!

This keychain was made with thin red Chinese cord, and attached to a silver key ring. The entire knot is made with one continuous string, which can make it pretty complicated! To create the intricate knot, I used the help of a corkboard and pushpins to hold different sections of the knot, as one tiny misplacement would mean starting over completely from scratch.

The ends of the string were fused by holding them close to a candle flame, and then quickly pressing them together. Chinese knotting string has the unique property of being melt-able, like wax, and then quickly hardening, which makes finishing these pieces easy. Just make sure not to hold the finished piece near high heat, as it will definitely melt!

Within Chinese brush painting, traditional landscapes utilize a unique technique of painting, with special brushes and a specific type of rice paper. This style of painting, literally translated into "mountain water painting", requires patience, since layer upon layer of fine ink strokes and subdued colors are applied to create it.

Please note that this is an unframed painting. The virtual frame in the second photo is shown to give an idea of how it will look once hung.

THE PROCESS

Each Chinese brush painting begins with a blank sheet of thin rice paper and a stick of charcoal. With an image of the painting in mind, faint charcoal marks are applied for placement of the image; these are later rubbed out.

The color palette consists only of black ink, white powder paint, and simple watercolors (red, yellow, blue, and a few unique colors such as red-brown and purple-pink). By mixing these in different combinations and at different concentrations with water, the spectrum of colors used in each painting is created.

The choice of which brush is also very important. Obviously a larger brush will give a thicker line, and a smaller brush a thinner line. But also, the stiffness or softness of the horsehairs in each brush must be considered. I typically use a soft brush for large swaths of color, and a stiff brush for things such as stems or branches.

Upon completing the painting, it is backed by a thicker and stronger paper, as rice paper is very thin and delicate. This is done by using a thin adhesive, and it also flattens the painting out, since rice paper tends to crinkle during the painting process. At this point, the Chinese brush painting is finished and ready for framing!

THE PROCESS

Each Chinese brush painting begins with a blank sheet of thin rice paper and a stick of charcoal. With an image of the painting in mind, faint charcoal marks are applied for placement of the image; these are later rubbed out.

The color palette consists only of black ink, white powder paint, and simple watercolors (red, yellow, blue, and a few unique colors such as red-brown and purple-pink). By mixing these in different combinations and at different concentrations with water, the spectrum of colors used in each painting is created.

The choice of which brush is also very important. Obviously a larger brush will give a thicker line, and a smaller brush a thinner line. But also, the stiffness or softness of the horsehairs in each brush must be considered. I typically use a soft brush for large swaths of color, and a stiff brush for things such as stems or branches.

Upon completing the painting, it is backed by a thicker and stronger paper, as rice paper is very thin and delicate. This is done by using a thin adhesive, and it also flattens the painting out, since rice paper tends to crinkle during the painting process. At this point, the Chinese brush painting is finished and ready for framing!

Burgundy Square Knot Necklace - 19 in (49 cm)

I absolutely loved the deep burgundy color of this satin cord when I first saw it, and so I thought it would be perfect as a unique knotted necklace.

The entire piece is made with one continuous string, which is a special characteristic of Chinese knots, and can make it pretty complicated! To create the intricate square knot pendant, I used the help of a corkboard and pushpins to hold different sections of the knot, as one tiny misplacement would mean starting over completely from scratch.

The necklace fastens at the back with a silver-plated hook-and-eye clasp.

In this Chinese brush painting, I layered a variety of trees as the focus - tall and short, with dark and light leaves created with different brush techniques. There are majestic mountains behind and above, and then blue mountains fading in the distance.

This type of traditional landscape utilizes a unique technique within Chinese brush painting, with special brushes and a specific type of rice paper. This style of painting, literally translated into "mountain water painting", requires patience, since layer upon layer of fine ink strokes and subdued colors are applied to create it.
