The original Louët with minor modifications to keep it on the leading edge of spinning technology. The S10's careful design has proven to be an ideal wheel for beginners and experts alike. Sturdy construction makes it a suitable wheel for production spinners. The single hole in the wheel leads to a balanced flywheel, which ensures that the wheel always stops in the place that you stop.

Instead of a single treadle as on the standard S10 wheel, the S1ODT is equipped with a double treadle (DT). This double treadle works like a bicycle, both feet go in opposite directions and allows for light, relaxed, two foot treadling.

Louet wheels treadle lightly, are easy to learn on and can be modified to satisfy the expert spinners.
The orifice on this wheel is sufficiently large; 1/2", as are the bobbins (180-250gr capacity); to allow you to create novelty yarns.
The fly wheel is 20" in diameter.
A two bobbin lazy kate is incuded.
Each wheel has a single belt bobbin drive with an adjustable flyer brake to regulate the tension.

LOUET Drum carder Junior card ROVING

Louët has five different drumcarders: the Classic, Standard, Junior (or Roving), Elite and Electric drumcarder. They are made of laminated birch and have a hard white coating. The drums of the carders are 19 cm (7 1/2") wide, except for the drum of the Junior (10 cm (4") wide). In order to ensure a long life, the teeth on all Louët carders are made of high grade plated steel wire. All gearboxes, except for the Elite drumcarder, are enclosed to prevent fibers entering the gear system.

The Standard and Junior drumcarders have an extra fine cloth (72 teeth per square inch). The advantage of this extra fine cloth is that you also can perfectly card very fine fibers.
All drumcarders are equipped with a doffer brush, doffer pin and two table clamps to clamp it onto a sturdy table. An instruction manual written by well known author and fiber artist Deb Menz is included with all drumcarders.

For drumcarders it is common to mention the gear ratio that drives the licker-in when you rotate the large drum. For the Roving carder the ratio is 3.8:1. However, what really counts for carding is the ratio of the surface speed of both drums. You get this by multiplying the gear ratio with the ratio of the diameters of the large drum and the licker-in. This surface speed ratio is 12:1 for the Standard and Junior drumcarder.

LOUET S45 Double Treadle Spinning Wheel

Visually, as well as technically, a remarkable wheel. The design challenge for this wheel was "compact and easy to handle". We also wanted a 1:20 spinning ratio for this wheel, which is much faster than our regular wheels, as well as most wheels on the market. Since a large wheel, needed for a fast ratio, would not give a compact construction we chose an acceleration wheel. This higher speed of a small flywheel makes the S45 treadle easily, just like our other wheels. The S45 is made out of hard maple and finished with a medium gloss water based lacquer. By shifting the polyurethane drive band on the back of the wheel you can change the ratios: 1:7, 1:12 and 1:20. The S45 works with a double treadle and the Scotch tension spinning system. It has a built-in lazy kate with 2 extra bobbins.
The S45 comes completely assembled in a cardboard box.

If you enjoy spinning silk or Tencel, you will find the same pleasure spinning this new fiber.

With a staple length between three and four inches, a fine fiber diameter and surface that allows the fibers to slide past each other, drafting this material to the thickness you want is easy.

Split the roving to a pencil thickness and spin from this. Keep your hands at least four inches apart due to the fiber length. Draft the fibers to the thickness you want before allowing any twist into the fibers which will lock them together. Ply to produce a balanced yarn.

Skein up your finished yarn. To set the twist, soak in warm water, gently squeeze out the water by hand or by rolling in a towel, snap the skein between your hands to realign the strands and hang to dry.

Do not be alarmed if at this point your skein looks a little bedraggled. Just wait until it is completely dry and snap the skein between your hands. If it still seems a little stiff, wad the skein into a ball and restraighten.

Black Diamond Fiber by Louet

According to the American Chemical Society, in 1879, Thomas Edison invented the first incandescent light bulb. It used electricity to heat a thin strip of material, called a filament, until it glowed. Edison may also have created the first commercial carbon fiber. Early filaments, were made from bamboo slivers which were formed into the proper size and shape then baked them at high temperatures.

Since bamboo consists mostly of cellulose, a natural linear polymer made of repeating units of glucose, the filament was "carbonized," when heated. It became a true carbon copy of the starting material - an all-carbon fiber with the same exact shape. Tungsten wire soon displaced these carbon filaments, but they were still used on U.S. Navy ships as late as 1960 because they withstood ship vibrations better than tungsten.

Bamboo carbon fiber, called Black Gold or Black Diamond by those in the industry, is resistant to ultra violet rays and possesses anti-odor properties. It also adjusts well to both humidity and dryness.

I love to spin! Feeling the various fibers in between my fingers is a textural journey that never ceases to delight me! Sometimes I use my handspun to make ponchos,scarves, hats, pillows or blankets.. frequently, I fill the shelves of my studio with them offering them to visitors and online at our website. Now I am bringing them to my Etsy customers as well!

This is a wonderful skein of yarn I all "PEACHY PEARLS". It was spun using handdyed wool n mohair. This coordinates PERFECTLY with "seashells" handspun as one of the ply from seashells was spun from this roving! This measures out at 158 yds of beautiful, shimmery, 2 ply yarn. Gauge 5-5.5, Needle size 6-7 and Hook size F-G. Weighs in at 4.5 ounces of fun! ENJOY!

I have a drum carder which I LOVE to use! You can create any combination of colors that you desire which makes it GREAT for custom yarns and felting!

I have decided to offer this as a service to you! Each lot purchased is for carding 4 ounces of fiber. No additional is needed in shipping unless you choose to send me fiber from another source.

How does it work? shop our store for the colors and textures you want! If you want bumps in your yarn or felted creation, add some locks! Sheen? add some silk or tencel! Purchase what you want blended. Then purchase a corresponding amount of carding service. Drop me a convo letting me know if you prefer 1 ounce balls or a large batt! That simple!

The example shown is 4 colors. 3 are wool rovings and 1 is a lot of wool locks. They were tips n tails so none of them weighed a full ounce. However you can see how they look carded! I will soon have a picture up of them spun as well!

There is also a picture of a large batt. It was not created with the same fibers but I wanted to give you an idea of what a batt looks like. Batts are fun to spin and felt. You simply pull a long sliver of whatever part you wish to spin or felt!

** please note.. I will not card super fine fibers such as angora, cashmere, or yak. **
