This plate from an 1895 German book shows zodiacal light (an atmospheric effect seen before sunrise or after sunset), as illustrated by the 19th-century French astronomer E. L. Trouvelot. (Trouvelot was also an amateur entomologist who inadvertently introduced the pesky Gypsy Moth to the US -- but that's another story!)

The plate is blank on the back and is in very good condition. Nice patina. Sufficient margin all around for framing. (Some parts of the bordering areas are not shown in the last photo.)

As with all the plates and prints from this book, the illustrations and photographs are razor-sharp and well-defined.

Printed on very thick paper, like cardstock. It has a nice, matte feel; blank on the reverse. Printed in Boston in 1900.

Slight marks or stains on the right-hand margin. Otherwise, the plate is in very good condition. Generous margin for framing, as per photo. The watermark on the image will not appear on the plate you receive.

An antique, back-to-back plate of various kinds of camels for your next trip to the desert. If you ever visit Giza to see the pyramids, you will most likely have to ride these animals, which is not a bad thing. Just remember that once you've gotten on the camel's back, it will start to straighten its legs, and will go up, and up, and up, until it feels like you're 10 feet off the ground. And then it starts to walk and has a very uneven gait. So you feel like you're about to be thrown off with each step. You hold on to dear life (or in this case, to dear camel), and try to remember that the camel does this hundreds of times a day.

The plate is gleaned from a German book published in 1897. The third and fourth photos show both sides of the plate.

As with all the plates and prints from this book, the illustrations are razor-sharp and well-defined. The plate has a nice patina. It is in very good condition.

These odd moss-green shapes, it turns out, are various stages in the development of the saturnia carpini caterpillar. This chromolithograph comes from a classic work on evolution published in 1882.

This back-to-back plate from an 1895 German book presents a wide variety of these fleet-footed creatures. Photos 1 and 2 show details from the plate, while 3 and 4 show the full pages.

If you're into identifying the wildlife, the Latin names for the various types are shown below the pictures.

The plate is in very good condition, with about half an inch around (not shown in photos).
