Here's how it works: You're hosting a baby shower, and you want to come up with a fun activity and a nice keepsake for the baby and mommy-to-be. I send you up to 20 squares of quilt-quality white fabric along with a full assortment of permanent fabric markers for your guests to decorate and sign the squares.

After the shower, you send the squares back to me, we decide on fabric for the other quilt pieces (I will e-mail you swatches), and then you wait patiently (or not, your choice) by your mailbox for four weeks while I piece the squares, assemble the quilt, and ship it off to you. You, in turn, get to bask in the squeals of delight and oohing and aahing from the new mom.

Your quilt is completely machine washable and makes a great tummy time mat or security blanket...though chances are equally good that it will end up hung on the wall in the new baby's nursery.
