When using the bone folder, hold it in a loosely gripped fist with fingernails lightly resting on the table with the bone folder resting on your fingertips and your thumb on the opposite side of the bone folder. You apply a downward pressure with your thumb and your fingernails will drag along the table surface next to the edge of the paper. The tapered end of the bone folder should be applied to the edge of the paper, don't dig into the paper, use the flat side to compress the fold. Folding bones help fold, crease, and score paper. They were always made from cow, deer, or elk bone. Today, most commercially available ones are made of plastic, Teflon, or wood. The best ones are still made of real bone.

Each one of these have a point on one end and rounded on the other to round the backs of books

These measure:
4 inches (110mm)
6 inches (153mm)
8 inches (200mm)

New- unused

All proceeds from this sale benefits the not-for-profit WNY Book Arts Center

Limited edition origami fold hardcover miniature book featuring a brief history of the printer's fist.

$20.00
Limited edition origami fold hardcover miniature book featuring a brief history of the printer's fist.

This book was completely hand set using antique metal printing type and printers ornaments (known as printer' fists or index or several other names). Silver Foil stamped on black cover with marbled paper band and endpaper. Hand letterpress printed on a vandercook 219 press and hand assembled from 5 square sheets. Each book is hand numbered and initialed. This edition is 20 copies in B & W with silver stamping (there is also an edition of 6 in burgundy boards with gold stamping and blue marbled paper). All printing and finishing was done using the facilities at the WNY book Arts Center in downtown Buffalo.

Size approx 3" square.

Text in Book:

Pointing hand
Printer's Fist
Index
Manicule

This curious sign has been a part of visual culture for centuries. It pre-dates printing as a sign for scribes to draw attention to passages in books.

The “Fist” has been made alongside type in great variation for over 500 years. It re-appears in popular culture in such unlikely places as the Beatles Yellow Submarine animated movie and the Postal Service’s “Return to Sender” sign.

Early uses in 16th century dictionaries as an indicator for cross-referencing make this sign essentially the first “Hyperlink”

Printed at the
WNY Book Arts Center
January
2009

Images show a closed and open book in the same shot
