Living in West Texas and frequent travels to New Mexico stimulated a long standing love of the flat landscape and its plentiful cactus. I especially fell in love with prickly pears and century plants. This painting is a colorful, stylized watercolor of a potted century plant and obviously one that is not going to bloom for a very long time. It's approx size : 17 1/2" X 22"

one of my favorite things is learning a new process. A few years ago a friend taught me how to make watermedia monoprints. I loved the process and am only sorry I've been to busy to explore the medium more. This painting combines my love of cacti and my love of color. It is approximately 24 1/2" X 18" and is a mixed media piece which combines watercolor with colored pencils. And while there is subject matter to this painting it is basically color, shapes and shadows which is the theme here.

While my son was working on a school science project (making a collection of something---and he chose cacti and succulents) I helped him with his shopping. While looking I fell in love with the little colored pots they came in. As we went from nursery to nursery and diy store to diy store I became quite shameless about looking in their trash bins to see if they'd thrown any away. Never one to pass up on a colorful item, I did find some that way, but the subject matter used in this painting were the leftovers from his project. They were quite fun to move around on a piece of paper and have made appearances in several of my paintings both oils and watercolors, although this is the last of them that still lives in my house.

"Tools of the Trade" is one of my favorite watercolors. I use a variety of watercolors in my work ranging from tube colors to old fashion trays. This particular watercolor is of an almost used old tray of colors. I have friends that used to ask me when was I going to get a new tin of watercolors and I'd laugh. It would be like getting a new friend. The grottier the better, that old messy watercolor box was the best, and sure it looked muddy, but I knew just what each of the colors would do. So one day I just started messing around and my watercolor palette became the subject matter. It was hard letting that painting go.

"Tools of the trade" is an 8 X 10 gliclee printed by a professional printer with archival inks on archival paper in a limited edition of 50 prints, 7/50.

The Elyssa, Tall Ship from Galveston--11 X 14 print

This is an 11X 14 reproduction giclee print.

The Elyssa is one of the old sailing ships that has been over hauled and rebuilt and has a home in Galveston, Texas. It takes part in many of the Tall Ship events around the world. I was lucky enough to tour this proud ship just after it was fleet ready and flying its colors one balmy Sunday afternoon in Galveston. It was such a festive occasion as the crew proudly showed her off. With camera in hand I was able to capture that excitement. The Elyssa was about to set sail on an adventure and I to embark on the adventure of painting a watercolor capturing her the glory of flying colors.

As with most of my watercolors I am attracted to the color and patterns that a subject matter presents and the Elyssa flying flags and mast with her dangling riggings presented many elements to put together a wonderful pieces of a puzzle making up a finished painting.

This is a reproduction giclee print in 11 X 14 format printed by a professional printer on archival paper.. limited edition of 50 prints each signed and numbered (2/50)by the artist.

This is an 8X10 reproduction giclee print of my watercolor called "How Much is That....".

The painting is based of two events which took place in Santa Fe, New Mexico In the early 90's. While a friend and I were wandering the streets checking out our favorite galleries we couldn't resist this toy store. As you might have notice I have a real love of color and am really attracted to bright color and patterns so this toy store was really ripe for the camera. And when my friend popped on a hat and looked in the window a second photo was just waiting to be taken. And it reminded me of the old song "how much is that doggie in the window" The actual watercolor took a long time to complete but it was all pure love and I was sorry to see it leave.

Melaka (Malacca) was my favorite place to visit in Malaysia. I went there as often as I could. It was about 3 hours from Kuala Lumpur so when I wasn't there with my husband I would tag along on tours that left around the block from where I lived. Then I would just wander around the streets of Chinatown taking photos until the tour or my husband were ready to leave. It didn't matter how many times I went there it was always wonderful and there were always new discoveries and then there were some things that never changed. And one of those never changing events was this always hanging laundry. I swear it was always there, always the same clothing. Sometimes there were samlars parked in front of them, sometimes like this day they hung alone.

It was amazing and intriquing that this set of clothing could be washed and left to dry in that place whenever I was in town. Now I realize that I wasn't there everyday, but a real coincidence that it was hanging there when I was. This one particular day the shadows the laundry cast were so gorgeous that I knew I had to paint it and the colorful clothes pins were the frosting on the cake.

In search of Dandelions

This photographic manipulated print was inspired by the Military Brats of Etsy Street team. Our challenge for the month of April was to use the dandelion, the official flower of military brats, as the subject matter. The interpretation could be anything from abstract to literal to whatever struck your fancy.

While traveling the back roads of Texas in search of wildflowers I came across this gorgeous field of bluebonnets. And there among the beauty of the blue flower was a group of dandelions. They looked terrific at the top of the hill standing there holding their own against the more colorful and sought after bluebonnets. I doubt if many people would get excited about such a sight......but out of all the weeds I have in my backyard nary a one is a dandelion. And I had hoped that I would find just such a mix of flowers. The beauty and beast if you will. And Texas is already a bluebonnet state. I'm pround to be a member of The Texas Etsy crafters.

Tulips

This particular painting goes back to my love of oils. Due to studio space oils on canvas became an impossibility, but every now and then when I get the yen I bring them out and play with them like a child plays with finger paint. This painting is created with oils on paper.

The subject matter is four orange and purple tulips.They are a bright contrast to the dark background. A colorful thread of different colors runs throughout the painting. The leaves are in greens and Turquoise, two of my favorite colors.

The size of this small gem is approx 5"X 7".

This is a watermedia monoprint,a technique which produces a one of a kind image utilizing water based inks and a glass plate to layer an image on paper. This monoprint reflects my love of West Texas and South Eastern New Mexico and the prickly pears which live there. I love how they play against the long low background that runs forever along the sky. People say West Texas has no landscape but they know nothing and see nothing. This print is also part of a very long series I have done exploring the prickly pear in both realistic settings and abstract plays on shapes. I miss my days there and the inspiration I used to get just getting out of the city.

"African Hats" is an original watercolor measuring 5 1/2" X 7 1/2 ".

Each year the Houston International Festival salutes a different country and the downtown parks are turned into one (or several) big parties. These hats were found in one of them on a cool crisp day. The colors and patterns against the blue of the tent and the modern skyscrapers in the background were a wonderful juxtaposition. Watching the people come and go made for phantom shapes at the bottom as well.

The inspiration for this watercolor and graphite painting was a vibrant photo of a fruitcart near Karon beach. The man selling the fruit, which is bright, colorful and inviting, proved to be a wonderful subject. He didn't mind my intrusion on his business transactions. This fruit cart, found in Phuket,Thailand is typical of the movable carts which abound there. I was attracted to the subject because of its vibrant colors which fit quite well into my love of primary colors. And of course, the fresh fruit.

This particular watercolor in 11X15 in dimension and painted on Arches paper.

Mixed media, watercolor monoprint

I love to learn new mediums. A friend introduced me to watermedia monoprints. I had done printmaking in college but never monoprints using this particular technique. Since tulips are one of my favorite flowers they have been the subject matter of many different works of art at one time or another. These tulips were left over from mothers day, I think. Tulips are so sculptural they make a great subject matter and they were the perfect model for a "first" exploration. And since yellow is a favorite color I really enjoyed this experiment.

A monoprint is a one of a kind print. It involves inking a plate with different colors to produce the image. Once the plate (whatever surface you choose) is inked you transfer the ink to paper using a press, brayer, or in my case a nice big wooden spoon, and from there you have your print. I went on to do many more monoprints, but this is still one of my favorites.

Instead of looking at it as a whole I looked at it as bits and pieces and they gradually became this giant piece of work that was a girl looking in a toy store window. There was a lot of satisfaction when the last piece of the puzzle was put into place

This is a watercolor that is 22" X 30".

"On the Rack" was inspired by a friend of mine who loved hats. She loved them so much that her house looked like a hat emporium. Through the years her collection just grew and grew. It was always fun visiting to see if I could spot the newest acquisition. After years of friendship I gave up. But it did inspire a few paintings. This is one of my favorites. As in many of my paintings its a game of making a puzzle and putting the pieces together. I loved the patterns created by the hats and their bands and how the dark shapes moved in and out of the hats, and how they sat next to each other and on the hat rack. All in all as the puzzle came together its always like magic to get to then end and see the finished painting.

The Elyssa, Tall Ship from Galveston

The Elyssa is one is one of the old sailing ships that has been over hauled and rebuilt and has a home in Galveston,Texas. It takes part in many of the Old Sailing Ship events around the world. I was lucky enough to be able to tour this proud ship just after it was fleet ready and flying its colors one balmy Sunday afternoon in Galveston. It was such a festive occaision as the crew proudly showed her off. And again with camera in had I was able to capture the excitement of the moment. It would have been more exciting to have been able to capture the moment more intimately with a brush but Alissa was about to set sail on an adventure so time was indeed important. This ship is indeed beautiful and a joy to visit whenever in dock.Approx. size: 22" X 33
