When I was in high school and college, I had a friend who was a brilliant mathematician. He always liked to keep his notebook nearby for working on his math, and so he got in the habit of wearing a fishing vest everywhere he went. He could keep all sorts of useful things in the front pockets, and in the back was a single large pocket just the right size for a standard composition book.

As someone who does a lot of writing, I also frequently find myself wishing for a convenient way of keeping a notebook with me, but over the years I've come to terms with the fact that a fishing vest is not for me. It made my friend look like a rather eccentric mathematician, which was accurate, but fishing vests tend to make me look like a member of a militia. Finally it hit me: Build a stealth fishing vest. Design and sew a vest with as many handy pockets as possible while still retaining a respectable appearance appropriate to all social gatherings. As soon as I'd had the idea I knew that there were other people out there with the same need.

This particular vest pattern was designed with a writer in mind. The large back pocket provides easy access (given a reasonable amount of shoulder agility) to a standard-size composition book, and the smaller side panels work well for smaller notepads. The inside pockets include one 2"x5" pen pocket, one 2"x8" pocket for a pencil or pair of chopsticks, and two 5"x7" pockets for whatever you wish to have with you. The outer front of the vest includes four buttonhole-style pockets in various sizes for maximum storage space with minimum disruption to the timeless style of a traditional vest.

This piece is part of a series of quilts that I did inspired by traditional stained glass designs. Starting out with plain white sheets and scrap fabric, I used low water immersion dye techniques to create the vibrant patterns of color on each piece of fabric. From there I did all of the piecing on my home machine, and did the actual quilting by hand. It represents a full week of work.

The finished quilt measures approximately 45"x45", and would make a lovely accent for a bed or a unique wall hanging

The whole thing is sewn together very securely with a triple stitch and I've been using one for a year of hardcore pedestrianing with no durability issues.

Shibori is a Japanese art that is basically PhD-level tie-dye. It includes stitching, folding, and clamping the fabric to create resists for the dye. All of my Shibori pieces start out as white 100% cotton muslin, and are dyed with Procion fiber reactive dyes. They are all entirely colorfast and well washed, and should never bleed onto other things in the wash.

This particular piece was dyed once, carefully stitched and gathered, and dyed again to create a fascinating stripe pattern.

Also known as a driving cap, ivy cap, and golf hat, the traditional flat cap is a classic that has never gone out of style. Find the right fabric, and it'll appeal to everyone from aging Yorkshire shepherds to 20-something Boston hipsters.

My hats are all made from scraps, often from bags of scrap friends were going to throw out. They are designed to be on the large side of one-size-fits-most. If you have a particularly small head, you may find yourself adding a hatband. The front of the cap is sewn to the brim rather than fastened with the traditional snap, but this means that with five minutes, a seam ripper, and a needle and thread, it can be turned inside out for an interesting change in style.

This hat is made from a jazzy green and rainbow batik print. The lining is made from a striped silk. The brim is stiffened with buckram, allowing it to be shaped to your preference with a a little steam.

I started making these last fall after I decided to learn to juggle. After a bit of trial and error, I found the best combination of materials: recycled tshirt fabric for a bit of stretch, filled with 100 grams of hulled millet. The small grain of the millet brings one of the smoothest feels I've run across in a beanbag, and should you find yourself trapped on a desert island, it's also edible.
