-Islamic Pattern-
Islamic art, typically, though not entirely focuses on the depiction of patterns and Arabic calligraphy. If you have ever seen Arabic calligraphy you could see that it manages to be both structured as well as organic at the same time. Similar are so many Islamic pattern, they have a strong geometrical sense but still posses great fluidity. This picture is an example of such, it is a hand painted Islamic pattern on the wall of a mosque in Yazd, Iran. The rich colors and the flowing lines are a wonder to see.

You saw the interiors of the Essex Steam train in Connecticut with my photographs Sitting Blue and Sitting the Old Fashioned Way now we take a look at the exterior of the wonderful steamtrain. It had such a marvelous antique feel to it, reminded me of a time when this was the mode of travel. Before there were airplanes. So I gave the picture a sepia tone wanting to give the viewer the same feeling I had when I got out of my car and lay my eyes on this steamtrain.

This was the view from my small one bedroom apartment. I would see the siding of the building next to me and on it was this light that was lit at night. I liked the repetitive lines of the siding, I liked how the light illuminated some of the siding and so the picture was taken. I adjusted the toning feeling sepia complemented the simple shot better.

What a wonderful moment this was, almost as suspenceful as when the girl is hiding under the bed and the killer walks into the room, his feet at the foot of the bed, the girl trembling, he is about to stoop down and find her but hears a noise, is distracted and walks away. Okay, so that’s a bit of an exageration but when you, as a photographer see that perfect shot slipping away similar horrors overcome you. Bear with me while i tell you just what happened. I was in Pakistan, in the back seat of my car with my mother, the driver talking me to my father’s office after a shoot. We stop at a red light, and a man in his car two lanes across drops his hand out the window. The moment I see his adorned hand I knew this would make a perfect addition to my portfolio of hand shots. I thankgod for having my camera at my side, aim and miss it. The car in the next lane moves blocking my shot. When the car finally does move out of the way the man has taken his hand in and is now fiddling with his mustache. To make a long story short, after many failed attempts and curse words muttered under my breath he finally put his hand out the window again, moments before the light turned green and I got my shot. One shot. This shot.

My mother hates her hands, they are wrinkly and boney, her veins pop out and make her hands appear weathered and aged. I agree, I wouldn’t be thrilled at inheiriting her hands but they make an excellent subject to photograph. They have great character and I know I say that alot, character, but I think that is the most important thing in making a great photograph. You can make the picture of a chair appear to be the most stunning peice of furniture you have ever seen if you can find it’s uniqueness, may that be the fact that it is plain and use that to it’s advantage. Focusing on it’s flaws may even be the key, whatever you do, stay true to the object, represent it and make that completely ordinary object appear as if the most extraordinary object every concieved. I think this is one of my favorite shots, my mother couldn’t believe this was her hand, and to me it is the most beautiful hand in the world

This photograph was taken in a small concrete hut, a hut as large as a small bedroom, a hut with four men and two children weaving together various peices of wicker furniture. This particular man, whose hand is the focus was working on a chair. Such intricate labor intensive work requiring such attention to make a piece so often taken for granted. This photograph was taken in Pakistan.

Color, wrinkles, nails, veins, slenderness and length; so many things make up a hand, so many characteristics. Each hand different from the last, each hand with it’s own personality, with it’s own story. This hand is of a janitorial woman working in my college. She was taking a break, resting her hand and taking a breath, some peace from her otherwise tiresome day. The contrast of the color of her skin and her clothes, the position and placement of her hand, her posture, everything came together to make this an ordinary yet interesting photograph.

-Sitting the Old Fashioned Way-
While we were roadtripping through New England one of our first stops was in Essex, Connecticut. The season was fall and our intetion was to take in the wonders of nature, enjoy the fall foilage. In Essex we bought tickets for the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat. When we got to the ticket counter it turned out that the train had been reserved for a private party and not open to the public on that day but since it was just the two of us ( my husband and I) they said they would give us a private car. If you still haven’t figured it out well the private car looked like what you see above. It had this antique feel about it, reminded me of a time when these trains were the means of tranportation, nothing like the trains we have today. And then every once in a while the steam train would let out a tut. It was enchanting. I gave this image a sepia toning to mantain the antiquated feel. A perfect stop on what turned into a perfect trip.

We all see the raindrops on our windows, we all see them glitter in the light. Rain is depressing to some, it is cleansing to me. Sure I don’t want to be standing out in the cold pouring rain, but watching it, smelling it, curled up with a hot cup of coffee listening to its beat relaxes my. Just writing about it, imagining it now is soothing me. It was dark night and I admired the drops of water on my kitchen window, them were especially magnificent with the light of the lampost illuminating them. I had to pull my self away to get my camera. Its just one of those simple pleasures we see and overlook so often. Never to be overlooked again.

This was a fun picture to take and I took several pictures before I got this one perfect, where the flame was infact a flame and not a blur or a streak, where the fingers were visible, where the surrounding black was as black as it could be. Now I didn’t want the house to catch on fire so we set this shot up in the bathroom sans towels. My brother sat with a box of matches and I with my camera, he would strike a match and hold it steady while I took the photograph. Match after match was struck, some burned to fast making him drop it while others hardly burned at all. But often it’s the time you put into a picture that makes it all the more important to you. It was a photograph I shared with my brother that makes it all the more special.

Selective Coloring Cherry Blossoms Photograph - 4x6

-Just a Dash of Pink-
Every year around the end of March till the mid of April Washington DC is pretty in pink. Everywhere you go you see these beautiful Cherry blossoms in bloom. These trees were in fact a gift from the Japanesse back in 1912. When I saw these blossoms they were so delicate I wanted that to come across in the shot. The photograph had many flowers in the shot, pink petals everywhere but the emphasis and just how soft and light these petal where wasn’t coming through to my liking. Hence, I thought the method of selective coloring would do it better justice.

My photography class was on a class trip to Iran, we were a bus full of photography sutdents traveling from Tehran to Sheeraz and the sun is setting surrounded by these gorgeous clouds. We convinced the driver to stop at the side of the road as we all piled out of the bus camera’s in hand. If only someone had thought of getting a shot of twenty something twenty years olds standing at the side of the road shooting the sunset.

Most know of Pakistan as a third world fanatical Muslim country full of terrorists. I have lived in Pakistan, my parents were born and raised there and though it has its many faults it also has its many beauties, its many treasures and many things that I love and cherish. At Work is a picture of my maid, Sakina in her small and modest home where I captured her hands as she used two rocks to grind herbs and spices to make that nights meal. This is a method still used in homes where a mechanical grinder is a luxury and not a necessity. According to Sakina and her mother, herbs ground on a rock maintain the rich flavors that are often lost by all our machines.

Number Six - 4x6 Photograph

-Six-
Foxes or Jolly Ranchers, whatever you may call those crystal like fruit flavor sweets? I always thought them to be like prisms, emphasis on the word thought. I had never seen light pass through them, never seen the colors of the rainbow appear on the other side. Yet I stacked them up on top of each other to build a wall. Half way up and moments before it crumbled to the ground I noticed that these little pieces of crystal like sweets were infact not prism like. I added in a little color, whites and reds, six the day of my birth and instead of stacking them up I lay them down and gave the camera a slight tilt and had my picture.

-Sitting Blue-
While we were roadtripping through New England one of our first stops was in Essex, Connecticut. The season was fall and our intention was to take in the wonders of nature, enjoy the fall foilage. In Essex we bought tickets for the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat. When we got to the ticket counter it turned out that the train had been reserved for a private party and not open to the public on that day but since it was just the two of us (my husband and I) they said they would give us a private car. If you still haven’t figured it out well the private car looked like what you see above. It had this antique feel about it, reminded me of a time when these trains were the means of tranportation, nothing like the trains we have today. And then every once in a while the steam train would let out a tut. It was enchanting. The blue of the chairs so cool, so lush, the sun streaming in. A perfect stop on what turned into a perfect trip.

Hand Shadows Photograph - 8x10

-The Offering-
My mother’s hand, a string of rosary like Islamic prayer beads called a 'Tasbeeh' and a flashlight. The elements though simple the trick was the angles. Angle both the light and camera in such a way that the image was clear and not blurry, the contours less vague and mainting the slenderness of the hand. Shadows often have a way of becoming subdudded in a photograph if the light is not strong enough, but too strong a light could make the picture apear washed out. Hence, the aperture was kept small and the shutter speed slow. After a few experimental shots a balance was found and The Offering was the result of just that.

A little bird sitting at the waters edge, the worlds edge for all he knows. Sometimes a shot is based purely on timing. You may twiddle with your camera, have the perfect light and angle but if that bird flies away that photograph is empty. There are too many time that I have missed picture perfect moments because my camera was in my bag and by the time I pulled it out my little animal friend had scurried away. Candid photographs of people are often the same way, it’s important to always be prepared. Often timing is everything.

We were in Singapore I think when my mom bought these really pretty glass sweets, they were the size of an actual sweet but in different shapes and colors. I was working in the studio at that time when I noticed its shadow was made up of such lovely colors but the trick was to get the angle of the light just right so that the shadow turned out not blurry nor distorted but a true shadow of the sweet.

We were vacationing in Iran and there were these mausoleums and tombs in tribute to great poets, architecture reminiscent of old Islam and gorgeous tiles and organic paintings on the walls. This shot was almost unintentional, I noticed the light and the shadows and just took the shot, this one shot. I didn’t even look at it on the digital screen of my camera, there was so much beauty around me i didn’t want to waste time, I didn’t want to miss anything. I didn’t see this shot again till i uploaded the pictures onto my laptop. This picture is a reminder of the beauty of Iran.

This photograph is taken in Pakistan capturing the beauty that is created by the hands of the people. Here you see a man’s hands forming a bowl identical to the tens and twenties he has already created that morning. What you don’t see is that he sits on a flat rock on the floor surrounded by sand and gravel under a tattered tent shielding him from the blistering heat. But these conditions do not effect the perfection of his craft. In the hour I spent with him, never did a bowl turn out to be anything other than what he expected, perfect.

Nature really is full of surprises, rarely to you come across a tree with a bark that stops you in your tracks. Not because of it’s size or because of it’s twisted body or it’s uprooted roots. This bark stunned me with its colors, these whites, yellows and greens were not paint but a natural pigment of the tree. And it made a gorgeous abstract shot.

I was in Florida while my husband was attending a conference. I took this free time as quality time with my camera. Our hotel consisted of two buildings, each standing swimming pools and tennis courts apart. I started by standing in my balcony and took a picture of the second hotel building, I got a close up making the picture abstract and tilted the camera a bit to create interest. It was one of those simple photographs that people simply overlook. This is also one of my favorite type of photographs, I love the abstraction.

An unexpected picture found where you would least expect it. There was an old run down fight jet memorialized in King Abbas’s Garden in Tehran, Iran. This particular photograph was abstracted from a piece, unidentified by me under the wing. I like the holes and their angle and depth and decided it might make for an interesting picture and the sepia tone just added to the abstraction.
