This is the economical and portable way to spin! This kit has everything you need to get started spinning your own yarn.

The Kit includes:

a 1.7 oz. unfinished pine top whorl spindle

2 oz. of roving that works well for beginners

instructions and tips for beginning drop spindlers, including links to online sites for additional instructions and videos

a length of string for a leader (to start your yarn)

This spindle is perfect for beginners and with some practice, you will be spinning your own yarn soon. But the spindle is also good for experienced spinners. It spins very smoothly, and seems to spin forever!

You can finish the spindle with oil, stain, or paint, or you can leave it as is.

Complex Semi-Solid Fingering Weight Yarn with silk, Pine Bark, 100g

Semi-solid hand painted yarn, with color complexity rare in semi-solids. The complex semi-solids work well by themselves, or used in combination with solid or other semi-solid yarns. The results are rich, elegant, satisfying.

My yarn colors are inspired by the natural world around me in western Montana. The bark of pine trees are a wonderful mix of browns, tending towards grey, red, orange, purple, black, and all of these subtle shades of brown are reflected in the yarn. This yarn captures this color richness with short color runs so that the knitted/crochet/woven/felted garment will show little pooling or striping.

I designed this color with the men in my family in mind, but I am looking forward to making a scarf for myself. The silk brings out the richness in the colors.

The Yarn:

70% merino wool
30% silk
Next-to-the-skin soft yarn with the sheen of silk, perfect for shawls, baby clothes, socks (the silk ads strength), etc.

100g (3.6 0z.)

Enough for a pair of socks (women's medium), a scarf (use size 6 or 7 needles).

Fingering weight
7-8 st/in on size US 1 or 2 needles

Recommendation for an original scarf: choose a lace stitch that you like, cast on ~35 stitches on size 7 needles, knit 8 rows garter stitch, then knit your lace pattern with 3 stitches of garter stitch on both sides. When it is long enough, or you are nearly out of yarn, knit another 8 rows of garter and cast off).

These yarns are perfect for livening up the simplest stitch or adding depth and richness to more complex designs.

I have tried to accurately represent the color of the yarn in the photos. But my monitor and your monitor might show the colors slightly differently. If you are not happy with your yarn, you can return it for a refund.

Window drop spindle made in Montana

A top whorl drop spindle, unfinished, made from pine recycled from cabinets from a condemned building. It weighs 1.7 oz., the shaft is 12" long and the whorl 3.5" in diameter. It was made to my specifications by a woodworking friend who is also a handspinner. You can finish it yourself with paint, oil, or stain.

This spindle is well balanced, and spins forever. I use it to teach beginners, but I find that this is my go-to spindle more and more.

Handwoven Wool Rug, 4' x 5'

This beautiful handwoven 100% wool rug will give you many years of hard service. It is 4' x 5' in size, 1/2" thick, weighs 10 1/2 pounds, and has a knotted non-fringe edge. The weaving style is Swedish bound weave, resulting in a double-thickness, hard-wearing rug. As you can see in the photo where the rug folds over, the color stripes reverse on the two sides of the rug.

The colors are subtle shades of medium browns, alternating with warm tans and golds. The block pattern is asymmetrical with subtle color variation within each 'solid' color. The overall effect is warm, muted but dynamic, and elegant.

Wool for this rug came from the sheep from our own flock, mostly Navajo Churro. The wool from these colored sheep is known for its durability, sheen, and long staple (for strength).

The rug is densely woven and extremely sturdy with exceptionally straight sides.

Easy care cleaning: either a cold water hose down or cold water machine wash and air dry.
