I created this encaustic painting as a way to send a visual prayer to the universe, for peace, prosperity and healing for the earth. It is an earth prayer.

She is the madonna, the earth muse, the divine feminine, the goddess, harvest woman, virgin of guadalupe, the feminine principal, calling upon ritual, prayer and affirmation for the healing of our planet.

Vibrantly colored with beeswax and pigment it was painted on a 8"x12" cradled hardboard.
This painting comes framed. It is wired on the back for hanging.

It was created by the wonderful process of encaustic painting.

A layer of beeswax was applied to the board...and fused with a heat gun. After that more paint, and some collage imagery was added, with each layer having encaustic medium (which is beeswax and damar resin)overlayed and heat fused.
Layer upon layer of paint and beeswax was added to give a textured feel to the piece
Then the whole piece was carved into with lines incised to enhance the texture and imagery.

Deeply textured and vivid encaustic, mixed painting .It is reminiscent of the flowers floating ceremonially in the seas of Hawaii, honoring the beauty and transitory nature of life.

Encaustic paint is made from pure pigment and a mixture of molten beeswax and damar resin. The paint is applied hot with a variety of tools, then cools and hardens within seconds. The process is quite seductive, tactile, and sultry. Painting with hot wax results in a velvety matte finish, like the frosting on a donut. The most amazing thing about encaustic, is the endless versatility. Multiple layers of paint and clear wax create overlapping color and amazing depth.

The literal meaning of the word encaustic is “burning in” which refers to this step in the process.. Once the surface has cooled, the paint hardens into a permanent finish that can be worked to the rich and lustrous patina that is the hallmark of encaustic paintings. Care of Encaustic Paintings Encaustic paintings are durable and archival. As with all fine art forms, they should not be exposed to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures – they will thrive in temperatures between 35 and 125 degrees F.

Our children's crayons are a direct descendent of encaustic paints. The allure of encaustics is that one can carve, embed, layer, build up, reveal, and collage, creating incredibly unique and textural, luminous works of art.
