The colors on the fish are much different that the real colors of this pair. One is a Dorado and the other is a silver porgy. They are essentially the same species of fish, but their natural colors are pretty drab.

I glazed these two with a shino glaze that really accentuates the scales of the fish, their stripes are a metallic siver black.

The fish are both about eight inches long and are signed and dated on the reverse. The price reflects the cost of both fish.

Let me know if you have any inquiries. I love to talk about the fish!

It has a wondrous tenmoku glaze that enlivens the richness of the fish body. They eye on this fish is especially cool.

While this doesn't match the true nature of the Minnesota State fish, it does capture the essence. I take great pride in producing "realistic' looking fish, but also strive to emulate and discover the artistic process. This fish is the latter.

The fish is high fired to cone ten and is signed and dated on the reverse.

Sea Bass Ceramic art Pottery fish wall hanging

$48.00
For the ten year anniversary of the studio I started my fish work at three years ago, my pal Peter and I mixed up some glazes to add to the inventory. It's enriching work.

We spent countless hours combining chemicals and doing test tiles to see which glaze best suited and complimented the twenty or so glazes the studio already provided for it's members. It was a great learning experience for me since I don't have a ceramics background. Peter barked out recipes and I combined the chemicals.

We were diligent in our process. We wanted glazes we would like and that the studio members could be excited about. In the meanwhile, I was getting a glaze education. Glazing is an essential and wondrous endeavor for me, and learning the guts of it all was fantastic.

Peter and I did significant research and tried variations of the glaze recipes we found in books and online. One of the "winners" is a glaze called "Shaner's Red".

It isn't "Shaner's Red" though. It seems that with our arbitrary variations, we left out a bit of Feldspar in the original recipe. It was a serendipitous mistake. It turns out that the new recipe we stumbled upon had a life of variables, most significantly, It broke gold when thick. It also turned out the same in Oxidation (electric) and reduction (gas) firings.

The new glaze, I took no blame for, was named, "PJ Volcano Red".

This is the glaze on this Sea Bass with an addition of iron oxide. The red glaze molts into a metallic dimension that accentuates the scales where the glaze is thin. It gives the fish a dark appearance of mottled hues of red and brown. The belly is a Haystack Orange (a glaze that almost made the cut).

The fish is about twelve inches long from nose to tip of the tail and is signed and dated on the reverse with a wire for hanging.
