---ALTERNATIVES is a rag rug pattern of my own devising that involves weaving with two opposing shuttles at the same time. The result is a rug with narrow, neat stripes running the width of the rug. In this case, solid black stripes alternate with a print fabric of black dots on a white background. I have added a laid-in diagonal pattern using strips of bright rainbow fabric. This diagonal pattern is subtle, but still manages to add a bit of "spice" to the rug. Laying-in is an early American weaving technique. Early American weavers did not have access to the wealth of warp colors that we have today and that we can use to create patterns in our rugs. Some early American weavers used small pieces of contrasting yarn or fabric and "laid" them across the weft to form patterns and pictures. The warp strings, which form additional stripes running the length of the rug, are black, grey and white and end in fringe of the same shades. Put together, the ALTERNATIVES pattern, the laid-in strips and the warp stripe pattern all add up to a very interesting and definitely one of a kind rug that will fit in anywhere, from a traditional room to an industrial modern loft.

The diagonal laid-in rainbow apparently is too subtle for my camera to pick up clearly in my main photo. I have included the photo of the full rug so you would have some reference as to size but added a closer photo that shows the diagonal rainbow detail against the alternating horizontal stripes that gives a better representation of the rug as a whole. There are four diagonal stripes in the overall rug.

---I wove this rag rug using one of the ugliest cotton print fabrics I have ever seen. The fabric was wide streaks of color, splashed unevenly from edge to edge—it looked like someone had used the fabric to clean dirty paint brushes. (I’ve included a photo of the uncut fabric so you can see what I mean.) I decided to ignore the ugly pattern and purchase the fabric because I liked the color combination of light browns, greys, black and gold. Woven onto a warp base of black, grey and white stripes, I think it makes a great looking rug. The grey warp stripes seem to fade into the background while the black and white stripes stand out from the fabric, giving the rug almost a three dimensional look. Ending in black, grey and white fringe, this rug proves that you never know how a rag rug is going to turn out until you take it off the loom!

---This handwoven rag rug is a beautiful, eye-catching aquamarine color. The fabric I used is one of muted flower petals that shades from deep aquamarine to medium lavender, but the color that predominates is definitely the rich aquamarine. I wove the fabric onto a base of blue and yellow stripes and the rug ends in fringe of the same colors. This rug really makes a statement!

Machine wash, warm. Dry flat.

---This rug was a nice surprise for me. The fabric is a pretty print of dark red roses with green leaves on a rich tan background. I really liked the fabric and had enough warp on my loom for one more rug so I thought I’d try this. I wasn’t sure I would like the way it looked on the warp I had on the loom, but I thought that if I wasn’t happy after a few inches I could pull it out and try something else. I ended up loving it! The brown and rust stripes add interest, the natural stripes blend nicely with the tan background of the print and the green stripes pick up the green leaves of the print. This allows the dark red rose color to peek through as an unexpected color accent. I think this is a rug that would fit in both a formal and casual room. One of my favorites! The fringe is dark brown, rust, natural and light green.

---I love the contemporary colors in this traditional rag rug. The flannel print is a mix of lime and navy abstract stripes with turquoise iguanas, (I don’t make this up…really). Woven onto a base of green and natural stripes, it is a bright and busy rug with a modern look. Fringe is shades of green and natural with some brown.
