SALE Two-faced Tilly OOAK Altered Recycled Art Doll

$75.00
Media: Mixed-media assemblage - doll parts, found objects
Dimensions: 8 1/2 x 6"
Date of Work: 2007

There is something going on in the buroughs of Wigithope and the neighboring Smallishville. Each place has it's own princess. There is Tilly of Wigithope, and Tilly of Smallishville. What the townspeople don't know is that Tilly of Wigithope and Tilly of Smallishville are one and the same.

Rumor has it that the two towns have been feuding over who will rule the entire region, the insects of Smallishville or the reptiles of Wigithope. Each burrough has a princess who is supposed to be lobbying around the countryside, but guess what? Two-faced Tilly has decided to try and make peace and the only way she could firgue out how to do was to work both sides in hopes that she could bring them together peacefully.

It has been working so far: Tilly of Wigithope has the throne on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with mornings on Wednesdays and Tilly of Smallishville takes the throne on Mondays and Fridays with afternoons on Wednesdays. On the weekend the throne is just a decoration and is known to be used occasionally by a small group of squirrels who run the local theater.

We must all keep our fingers crossed that this has a happy ending.

Tilly was made from lots of found objects and her faces and hands were created with polymer clay, baked, sanded, then painted. Her hair is made of a lovely soft fiber, crown is a metal embellishment, her body is a vintage watch face. Her legs are shells and I constructed pants using gold-trimmed tulle. Lots of other little bits, beads, & baubles make up her outfit and her throne is made from wire and brass leaves, beads, and fibers. On one side she's Tilly - turn her over and she's.....well......Tilly. A two-faced doll.

Thanks for your patronage and for supporting Self-Representing artists.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND Peekaboo Shadow Box DIORAMA

$135.00
Media: Mixed - Wood, found objects, paper, sculpt medium, poly clay
Dimensions: 8" T x 5" W x 7" deep
Date of Work: Jan 2009

The official title of this piece is "Alice's Misadventure's in the Wrong Wonderland Thanks to Her Faulty Looking Glass." Alice took a wrong turn. Her Looking glass has gone a bit wonky and she ended up here, at this awesome surreal winter wonderland, but she's freaking out because it isn't where she wants to be. Alice knows how to handle herself in some pretty tight situations, and Lord knows she's been through a lot, but a girl can only take so much. The worst part is, she drank from a green Coca Cola bottle and the caffeine only made things worse.

There are plenty of Alice in Wonderland references here. There's a rabbit with a ball and chain on his foot. There is a clock attached to the ball and chain - we all know how compulsive he is about keeping time. Well now, time keeps him. Then there's the Queen of Hearts, only this isn't just ANY Queen of Hearts. This is the Queen of Hearts recorded by Juice Newton in 1981. Wow, Alice isn't just in the wrong place, she's in the wrong time. There's also an egg on the back wall that hasn't quite been Humpty Dumpyfied. It's still waiting to grow arms and legs.

The mushrooms were made from poly clay and painted in Alice in Wonderland fashion. The caterpillar smoked all his hooka and turned into a beautiful butterfly. The Cheshire cat has been replaced by a black panther. My, how things change.

One of the things I really love about this piece is that I got to incorporate the vintage sign from the now demolished Wonderland Mall. I was in Livonia Michigan a couple years ago and knew it would be coming down so I took a picture of it. I loved that mall as a kid, and now it will always be a part of this assemblage.

Now, a bit about how this came to be. I haven't worked in almost two years and have lacked in inspiration lately. But when I saw there was an Alice in Wonderland exhibition I jumped for joy. Who better to stimulate the imagination than Alice?

I set out on a little adventure through all my saved found objects and began to build immediately. The ideas just spewed forth like I was possessed by Alice herself. And the final result is what I call a Peekaboo Shadow Box. The box part has a square window on top that contains a piece of blue cellophane. Under a light source, you can open the door of this little dwelling and peek in. The blue cellophane makes the scene look very surreal, and even a bit scary. Now you can understand why Alice is having a rough time here.

I started with this hideous attempt at a Kleenex box that I picked up at a thrift store. It was dark green and I made it a bit more festive with turquoise paint and vintage flowery trim. I made the door from the book cover of a vintage book that I trimmed nicely and hinged with flowers. There is a rusty key hanging from the door and a vintage pearly earring. I made the closure using a toggle clasp and more trim. There is also a metal lock on one part of the clasp. I used a gold tone Christmas ornament as the foliage on the door and a vintage butterfly brooch to adorn it. I decoupaged a rainforest scene from an old book on the front of the dwelling.

Inside, the looking glass is in the doorway. The snow was made using Golden sculpting gel, which was allowed to dry, then finished with Golden acrylic paint. I used vintage glitter (the kind that was made from real glass) to make it shimmery. I also used other shiny bits to look like stones.

The skiers came from a board game and the Christmas tree was a pewter wine topper that I adorned with sparkly things. The wonderland sign, Juice Newton record, rabbit, and Alice are all made from card stock. The Coca Cola bottle was a doll toy and I used gold glitter glue as the stuff pouring out. The egg is just a little plastic bird egg.

The box was a gift box containing a teapot that I got for Christmas. I couldn't believe how it fit perfectly in width and after a little trimming and gluing, I made it fit perfectly in length too. Everything seemed to go together perfectly.

I made Alice as a paper doll so she can be placed all around the piece, inside or outside.

if you would like to see more images of this piece, go to my myspace page: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=97262273&albumId=2607050

A small detail print of one of my original paintings is secured onto the primed disc, enhanced with Derwent Inktense colored pencils and finished with Golden polymer varnish for colorfastness and moisture resistance. The backs of the discs are painted using acrylic pigments and then they are added to cord, chains, or my handmade necklaces. It was painted using Golden acrylic paints and paper cutouts. It too sooooooo long to cut those little things out - ouch!
Calling Heaven ORIGINAL Mixed Media Painting

$325.00
This idea came to me after the death of a friend who was Catholic. I am not Catholic - but I would call myself a spiritual person. My daughter has had much interest in religion lately and asked a lot of questions about heaven and what happens to us after we die. I have given her much to think about and she has already made her own choice, which is different than mine. I am actually very impressed with her. She has made a choice and I will nurture that as much as possible. Anyway, I digress, and this is the work-in-progress that has come from these talks and readings from the bible - as well as from the passing of a dear friend.

This is a 24 x 24" canvas with Golden acrylics, many image transfers, photo images & vintage greeting card images. The image transfer on the very right (the girl looking through the window) is from a photo of my daughter, Ella, when she was only 2. I turned it into a line drawing in Photoshop, printed it, & made a photocopy. I take photos of bare trees and flowers against a white or light gray sky and those are all image transfers from photos. The image transfer of the little girl looking down from heaven is from a magazine from 1957 (as are the two children sitting together). The really metallic streak near the top is silver leaf . For fun I added a telephone tower that is directly under the window - just in case you can call from a cell phone. ; )

Thanks for your patronage and for supporting Self-Representing artists.
Ruths Garden ORIGINAL Mixed Media Painting

$360.00
I was rummaging through some old magazines and stumbled across a very old autograph book from around the turn of the century. The handwriting was so beautiful and each page had a lovely saying for a girl named Ruth, from her friends and teachers. I wanted to give Ruth a name and a place and here she is.

To create this piece I spread a thick layer of gesso, then used different items to texture it as it dried. Then I layered several thin washes of Golden acrylic paint over that. I waited until each wash was completely dry before pouring and dripping the next wash on. On one page of the autograph book was an acrostic using the the letters of Ruth's name:

Rambler

Unaffected

Tomboy

Henry

I have used that bit in the collage along with many other little bits and pieces like a sentence cut from a vintage book that reads: it was just the loveliest kind of day, paper, tissue paper, magazine clippings, granite crystals (the stuff that gives concrete that shimmery look), and Pearl Ex paints. I used a square of silver metal leaf toward the center and tarnished it. I then painted turquoise in the center and sewed a silver butterfly into the square using metallic embroidery floss. The floss is also sewn just above the butterfly

Thanks for your patronage and for supporting Self-Representing artists.
