These two paintings belong together. I was originally going to list them separately but couldn't do it. The inspiration for them came to me just as suddenly and certainly. What do they mean? Well, to me that's the best thing about art. We don't need language to explain, art speaks a non-verbal language our brains just know.

Another in my series of big brown eyed dogs. Suzette the beagle is practically hidden in the decorative motifs, but don't be fooled - she is manipulating you already. Such a tease, I made sure you know it by adding the dance step pattern in gold ink and another flowery flourish in silver. These combined with her sultry amber say "yes, she will get her dinner when she wants it!"

An ongoing obsession with pattern and cups lead to me painting 'Vessels II & III'. To me cups mean more than the comforting coffee I sip while I cradle them in my hands. Those vessels have come to sybolise so many good things.

The layered meaning of this work is reflected in the layering of colour, tone and line. Colour over colour. Line over tone. Tone over line. It's important to me that images be more than what they first seem. But if you just enjoy it for the delightful cup pattern that's fine with me!

"I used to play skipping stones at the creek down behind our house. The water was dark and murky. The stones were smooth and flat."

This is an original 7 x 5 x 1/2" (18 x 13 x 1.75 cm) mixed media painting on a stretched canvas panel, ready to hang. It is about love - to me it is the love of coffee, or is it the unrequited love of another?

I used bits of silver gocco prints, vintage book pages, painted art papers and acrylic paints to create the piece. I combined my own coffee shop sketch ideas with pages from:
Electricity in the Home (A Teach Yourself Guide)
The Complete French Course
A Short History of the World

I use artist quality acrylics so the colors will not fade or change. It has silver elements that are difficult to capture in a photo. The sides are painted too. I sealed it with several layers of uv-resistant gloss acrylic sealer. It is signed, titled and dated it on the back. It is ready to hang. It looks great leaning on a shelf. It would look equally as good in a frame. The painting will arrive safely cushioned and protected.

There is something about cake shops! They are filled with the most amazing looking cakes. The detail, the embellishments, the sheer design of them is often amazing!

I love the look of custard scrolls. They are voluptuous, they swirl, they dot, they drip, they crunch. But, like many cakes, to me they look better than they taste. The solution? Paint them!

This totally non-fattening cake is an original painting in acrylic on canvas. It is signed by me in the lower right-hand corner. The canvas is left white on the sides. It is fitted with a metal hanging device that allows it to hang pretty well flush to the wall.
30.5cm (12") square with a side depth of 2cm (3/4").

This painting looks great hung as it is, or equally would look good in a frame.

This rebound sketchbook is Growing Up, a novel by Angela Thirkell from 1945. The book has an original inscriptions inside the cover – ‘Margaret Knox’ and ‘from Jenny Xmas 1945’. So when I rebound this book I was careful to leave the endpapers and title pages just as they were – well almost! As I carefully disassembled the book to begin the rebinding I found a small treasure hidden between the pages for 60 years! A little list Margaret had written herself. On a small page torn from a notepad is a list of music to investigate ‘Tchaikovsky concerto in B flat minor, When the heater gleams like stardust…’ I’ll leave the rest of the list for the new owner to discover themselves, which they can because I’ve bound the fragment of paper into the book so it sits with the title pages.

Included in this rebound sketchbook/journal are:
*32 original pages scattered throughout
*1 note page (see above)
*32 pages smooth 190gsm Draw & Wash paper (archival)
*20 rough Arches 185gsm watercolour paper (100% cotton rag)

Added to this is a tape measure ribbon page marker so you can measure how much you have grown! The original red book cloth cover had faded to a gorgeous rust colour. It is in pretty good condition for its age. It's dimensions are 13cm x 19.3cm x 1.5cm (5.1" x 7.6" x 0.6"). I reinforced the spine to extend its life a little longer. Unfortunately a couple of small splits appeared while I was working on the book. The reinforcing should keep more damage from occurring but I can never be sure with such an old book. Ah, but that is part of the charm of old books – they take on a life of their own!

My rebound books make great sketchbooks or journals. I use high quality paper and archival bookbinders glue, pastes and materials. I allow each book to ‘tell’ me how it wants to be reborn so they are all very different. See my ‘books’ section for more.
