The work featured here is from my previous life as a printmaker and was not, unfortunately, made in Mississippi. It was made in Maryland, while I was a student at the Maryland Institute College of Art, getting my BFA in printmaking. There are etchings, silkscreens, lithographs, and linoleum cuts. When I finished art school back in 1993, I was sent out into the world to create on my own. That meant I no longer had a printmaking studio at my disposal—no presses, no chemicals, no plate cutters, no nothing. As a result, I quickly returned to painting. For the past fifteen or so years, I’ve created mixed media paintings on wood. Even though my way of working has changed, I think I still have a printmaker’s appreciation for line and process. And I definitely still have a connection to these old prints.
I have been sitting on this work for years, hording it as a testament to my life as a printmaker. This collection of prints is a scrapbook of sorts—a history of influences and experiences. But now I am ready to share them. They should be shared. They should have lives of their own.
