The story of how my shop came about is rather unique....
I've never lived anywhere for more than a few years, so if you were to peruse my resume, it would either read as the life of a scatterbrain, or as an adventurer sponge woman, who has lived on 3 continents in 15 years and has pursued several unique and varied interests along the way, never allowing herself to feel tied down to a life/career path or location.
I have always been a self-educator in one way or another. Though I followed what most would consider a traditional and safe educational trajectory through college, I always felt that locking myself into one "world" for too long was stifling and unsustainable for my sometimes unpredictable and often insatiable thirst for learning. I completed my degree in business (specifically, International Fashion Merchandising), but my educational career started in medicine, and I eventually found my way back to that path after graduating, anyway.
Though my wanderlust has kept me from staying anywhere long enough to establish permanent routes (and a traditional career), it has allowed me the privilege of exploring each of my interests along the way, while making enough income to feel free to move onto the next interest as it presents itself to me.
Two constants among all of these variables? Science and Art.
I find that when I'm not working in a scientific or medical field, I am reading science textbooks....for fun. When my work takes me into the medical world, all of my free time is spent on creating art. No matter what else is occupying my time, or putting money into my pockets, I am always finding a way to inject art and science into my life.
Though I do not have any formal training in the visual arts, I was surrounded by art from very early on; I was a classically trained ballet dancer and my mother was a hobbyist watercolor artist. I feel that the skill in watercolor painting I have developed so far is thanks to the eye for line and shape I cultivated as a dancer, a keen understanding of color chemistry from my education as a color forecaster, and a knowledge of the mechanics of working with watercolor and awareness of the elements of good composition from watching my mother work. The joy I derive from creating art comes from a wonderful balance of putting what I believe to be beautiful and striking colors onto paper, capturing the unique qualities of my subjects, and appreciating the chemistry of water and solutions (which is what watercolor is, when you think about it, anyway!). I began seriously painting in September 2016, when an injury kept me from participating in competitive sports (one of my other interests!) and I found myself confined to my bed for much of the day, with a lot of creative energy and free time. Since then, I have come to appreciate painting for so many reasons- making beautiful and unique things, the sense of pride when my painting is completed and looks just how I envisioned it, and the delight in knowing that my creations are hanging on walls around the world, bringing joy to other people!
I hope to continue developing my skills and technique, as well as my business over the years; my dream is to be able to fund a return to university to pursue a formal education in fine arts. If you enjoy my art and appreciate my story, please feel free to share it and to follow me through my social media channels, blog and Society6 shop!
