I choose clay as a medium to design and create forms, both functional and sculptural. Once I am happy with a design that I throw or sculpt, I use plaster molds to slip cast the forms multiple times.
My process starts out with exploring forms on the wheel, then making a plaster mold of the refined design. The next step is slip casting the piece, which involves pouring slip (clay that has been reduced to a liquid form) into the mold. This coats the inside of the mold, which soaks up the moisture from the liquid slip and creates a shell; the form. Slip is a refined and sophisticated material, when poured into a mold, it fills in every crack and crevice and adapts to its new environment.
I have always been drawn to industrial materials and how they are combined and utilized to create contemporary designs.
As a designer, I take in the world & its cultural and technological influences that surround me, apply traditional and new age techniques that I have learned as a ceramic artist, and respond by creating modern products.
