Experience a taste of the Southwest with original hand made clay art by New Mexico Clay artist Kathy Shiplet. Cone 6 stoneware and raku.

I use a variey of techniques to create one-of-a-kind pieces.

The water fountains are created by using both the potters wheel and the slump mold technique. I use coils to create an interesting basin. I throw the pump housing components, and the waterfall portion. The waterfall section is created, and the "dips" are formed just after the piece is thrown and very wet. The construction of the fountain is done at the leather hard state, carefully aligning all parts. I leave parts unattached for easy assembly and adjustment. Each water fountain is an original water art sculpture.

The coil platters are constructed on the slump hump. Each coil is extruded and carefully placed and formed to the mold. I find it interesting to see the clay "move" during the drying and firing processes. Glazes that "break" love these forms!

The still life plates are alot of fun and work! The plate is thrown on the wheel. All the components of the composition are created and allowed to dry leather hard and then carefully constructed. I enjoy watching as each piece starts to tell me it's story!

My functional pottery is made to be used!! They are all oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. I have been told my pots are a pleasing to the eye as well as a pleasure to hold! I do not add handles to the sides, since they are easy to grip even with pot holders!

My work is my passion, and I hope those who have my work enjoy it as much as I had creating it!
