I’m sad to announce that this short but amazing venture is coming to an end.
I have put heart and a lot of effort on making great baby products, trying to turn this hobby I started several years ago –baby carriers- into a small project that was slowly taking the shape of a small work-at-home-mom business.
More than 90 sales and 100% positive feedback in Etsy in so a short time is the proof that Ananda Baby Carriers always put quality, safety and customer satisfaction in first place.
The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008 is going to enforce certain requirements this year to regulate the baby industry and this affects everyone who manufactures or import products for children under 12 years old.
These requirements include testing each model to make sure it is safe; testing each component for lead (including fabrics, which should be tested per color batch), have insurance, etc.
We simply can’t afford paying for all the tests and certifications, as many other small manufacturers can’t. We are not the firsts shooting down the business and, sadly, won’t be the last ones. In addition to raising the costs the legislation also introduces a lot of uncertainty in the industry. It is a transition we can’t face due to the short time we had been running.
We believe this is a good thing, since we have always put safety first; however it will certainly kill small business and reduce the variety of carriers in the market. It will certainly raise the price of the carriers as the manufacturers will transfer the new costs to the final price. There is a lot of controversy around this, and we hope that ways can be found so the small players can afford the changes.
We want to stress the fact that Ananda Baby Carriers has ALWAYS used first quality materials. There is a great community behind the Baby Wearing industry and, even before the government started regulating the industry; standards were made, and materials were tested and recommended in order to make high quality and safe products. We have always used the materials and safety guidelines recommended by the Baby Wearing community.
