I created my first gargoyles and mythological creatures in 1990, and sold them through a wonderful little consignment shop on Newbury Street, in Boston. The owners of the shop kept encouraging me to create more new pieces, and they were very supportive of local artists. This little gargoyle shop was very popular, with dried leaves on the floor, big stained glass windows, and Gregorian chants playing in the background. The atmosphere was amazing. At the time, I was attending Mass. College of Art, and working in a small sculpture studio on Tavern Road, near the Museum of Fine Arts. It was an amazingly creative and informative period of my life. It was in the sculpture studio that I met my love, Christine.

Since that time, I’ve continued to explore and experiment in the field of sculpture, all the while maintaining my small gargoyle business under the name of JWH Studio. I thoroughly enjoy creating sculpture, whether it’s sculpting small gargoyles in plasticine clay, or carving marble and granite. I love process, and often feel the creative journey of making a sculpture is as important to me as the finished result. Many times, a piece starts merely as an idea, and it gets defined and refined during the sculpting process.
