HurricanePottery's Shop Announcement

More yarn bowls and utensil holders are listing soon! Ceramic pottery, hand thrown: kitchen utensil holders, yarn bowls, spoon rests, vases, ceramic jewelry, buttons and accessories. Want to know more about how my hand thrown pottery is made?

Several steps are involved in the process of making hand thrown pottery. After transforming a wedged ball of clay into a graceful shape on the pottery wheel, the piece is removed from the wheel. It may be altered at this point, or it may be left to dry a bit. When it reaches the "soft leather hard" stage, carving and embellishing may be done. At the "firm leather hard" stage the base or foot may be trimmed. When completely dry, it is bisque fired to cone 04 (1050 degrees Centigrade). Then the piece is dipped or sprayed with one or more of our custom, non-toxic glazes. After drying thoroughly, it is ready for another firing, this time to cone 6 (1190 degrees Centigrade). This high firing temperature gives pottery its finished appearance and its strength. Stoneware pottery is made of a dense, clay mixture. It is fired at a much higher temperature than earthenware, which gives both the clay body and the glaze a harder finish and a resistance to chipping, and it allows most pieces to be used in the oven, microwave, and dishwasher.

My glazes are mixed according to tested "recipes," so we know what's in them. I keep extensive records of each kiln firing to assure that appropriate and recommended procedures were followed. (Each piece of pottery is coded for reference to the kiln load and glaze/firing procedures followed.) All lead free and food safe, unless noted raku.
