Jean Bean was created out of a passion for color, pattern and a desire to elevate the every day to objects of desire.
Affectionately nick named Jean Bean from childhood, my earliest wish was to grow up to be an artist. My days were spent inventing new colors, decorating and redecorating my dollhouse, painting everything and anything, and creating murals for my bedroom walls.
As I grew up one of my favorite things to do was to go to the local thrift store and make "something out of nothing". I've always loved the mystique of things that once have had a former life and transforming them into something new and wonderful. I guess that's why I love painting vintage pieces so much!
As a student of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I reveled in the opportunity to explore textile surface design, fashion and art history. After several years working as a fashion designer for a large corporation I gained valuable business experience as well as a better understanding of the market. As satisfying as this job was I longed to pursue my own designs and dreams. Jean Bean was finally born when I began experimenting with glass and pottery and found that I could easily translate my designs for textiles and fashion to every day objects for the home.
It's been some time now since I have started off on my own and it's been a huge joy in my life. I love all of the different aspects of Jean Bean. Being inspired by an illustration in a children's book while reading to my son, or uncovering a hidden treasure at the second hand shop and creating a whole line around one piece. I love the meditative process of mixing colors, prepping the glass and hours spent painting.
Knowing that my labour of love can make memorable experiences and bring a bit of beauty, whimsy, and cheer to the world gives me tremendous satisfaction.
