What causes silver to tarnish?
In time sterling silver tarnishes naturally from the interaction with sulfides in the air. Humidity and/or air pollution are associated with higher sulfide levels which can speed up the tarnishing process. A person's body chemistry or diet can also speed up tarnishing.
.Clean your pieces with mild soapy water and pat dry with a soft cloth.
.Wear your jewelry often.
.Store your pieces in the box provided with the anti tarnish tissue and cotton and/or in an air tight bag in a cool, dry place.
.Avoid wearing your jewelry in heavily chlorinated water or when working with chemicals (hairspray, perfume, household chemicals, etc.). Put on your jewelry AFTER applying hairspray, etc.
Well cared for sterling jewelry will improve with age and develop a lovely patina. But if you would like to keep your silver pieces shiny and bright, buffing with jewelry polishing cloths are a gentle and great way to do so. There are also many cloths on the market with an impregnated polishing compound.
For more stubborn dirt and recessed areas, jewelry dips are fast and easy, but be careful. Many gemstones are sensitive to chemical dips and be sure not to use dips with pearl jewelry.
For aged/patinaed/oxidized pieces follow the above steps but do not use abrasive cleaners or dips.
Patinas also change over time, wearing in raised areas or places where frequent contact is made with the skin - which in my opinion adds to the beauty of the piece.
