KnittingForKnockers's Shop Announcement

MISSION STATEMENT: Knitting for Knockers, established in 2006, is a collaborative of artisans and craftspersons working to promote their creations to benefit breast cancer research and education. We are an effort which strives to bring together the timeless art of knitting with modern-day activism ideals, thus shedding light on the concept of craftspeople as activist artists.

I became interested in knitting while shopping at my local craft supply store. An artist drawn to the appeal of bright colors and unique textures, I was taken aback by the array of colors and yarn varieties. Despite my yearning to learn to create with those fibers, I decided not to tackle learning any new crafts, and instead continued to work within mediums already known to me: stained glass mosaic art, fabric dying, paper sculpture, and jewelry. It was not until my personal life was dealt a devastating blow that I made time to learn the art of knitting, and since that time it has become my salvation and near obsession.

The concept came to me during a game of Scrabble when the words suddenly popped into my head. "Knitting for Knockers." I knew instantly what they meant. I felt as if I'd been struck with a divine opportunity to turn my pain into purpose.

We have chosen Breast Cancer Action as the beneficiary of the funds collected through this project. Formed in 1990, BCA is a grassroots organization which “advocates for true prevention through understanding and eliminating the causes of breast cancer, a true cure with treatments that don't nearly kill people or cause other diseases, and universal access to quality health care.” For more information about this organization, please visit www.bcaction.org.

Currently, Knitting for Knockers donates the total purchase price of each item sold (minus etsy and/or paypal fees) to Breast Cancer Action. As the project grows, we reserve the right to utilize a small percentage of the funds collected for each item sold for the purpose of promotion and advertising. Potential buyers and contributors to the project will be notified when this goes into effect. Knitting for Knockers exists soley to bring together craftspersons and artists in an effort to raise money for a very important cause.
