Hi! My name is Sarah, and I am a young jewelry designer working from a small apartment in Paris. When I am not busy designing, I think about my future creations. My mind is always busy.

I have always been fascinated by shapes and colors. After studying design theory, I was ready to roll up my sleeves and start making. At an open house held by Olivier de Serre, France’s national school of applied arts and crafts, I discovered the ancient technique of lacquer. It was love at first sight! I was immediately captivated by the intensity of this material and the range of creative possibilities it opened.

After completing my studies, I left for Asia to immerse myself in traditional lacquer techniques, visiting Japan and spending several months in Hanoi, Vietnam, with a lacquer master. There is nothing like travel to discover new ways of creating. It is an endless source of inspiration! Back in France, full of images and ideas, I created my first line of Asian-influenced jewelry. In June 2012, LAKLAK was born.

I practice a technique known as European lacquer. The varnish is mixed with the pigments and applied with a brush in several layers, then sanded. These methods have been used in France since the 18th century, but I adapt them with new techniques learned during my travels, bringing a contemporary aesthetic to this thousand-year-old medium.

Working with lacquer fits me. It demands long and inescapable pauses between the different steps, but this forced slowness is precious to me. When you are setting gold leaf, engraving it, or correcting a tiny detail, there can be no mistakes. I like the measured pace of my profession; having to apply a new layer every day, working step by step, seeing the bracelet slowly evolve. An intimate relationship is created between the jewel and me, a sign of complicity.

I get my inspiration in the richness of other places, creating a universe ruled by fun. When I let myself go, the shapes and the material of my creations appear. Playing with geometry and colors gives birth to triangles that interlock, patterns that overlap or imaginary creatures melting in the lacquer. To create my decorations, I use different types of gold leaf (yellow, red or green gold) or mother-of-pearl or eggshell inlays – the combinations are endless!

Each piece of my lacquer jewelry is unique. Its handmade character means that my jewelry has a history. It begins as a tiny seed of an idea in my mind, which evolves and grows into a finished piece through my work. As I work, I like to think of the way all those steps become intertwined.
