I rarely photograph artworks, since a photograph can mask the original artistic statement. In this case, I was so struck by the composure and gentleness of the angel, that I felt compelled to show that through a polychrome print.

This image is one of fourteen from the “Vignettes” series which accompanies Venice: City of Illusions - Polychrome Series II. The subject matter is architectural and comes from several sites in islands of Venice. The Series has been exhibited at The Artistic Image gallery in Albuquerque, NM.

Like the Campanile of St. Mark’s Square, the gondola, is a symbol of Venice. Unlike the Campanile, it also represents the city’s struggle against the sea, which in this image has eaten away at the moorings. The gondola, however, always rises above the surf, suggesting that Venice must always meet the challenge of the sea.
